Tech has evolved so much and so quickly that I am always finding out new terms and new ideas that have made life so much easier.My goal was to set out and make a glossary of terms that you could use to stay up to date on virtual production and volume, which have become two of the most popular ways to shoot in Hollywood.Let's dive in.The Virtual Production & Volume GlossaryI. Pre-Production & Development (VAD)These terms relate to the creation of the digital world before any cameras are on set.VAD (Virtual Art Department): The team of artists and designers responsible for building the digital sets, lighting, and assets in pre-production.Asset: Any 3D model, digital prop, or environment element created in software like Unreal Engine to be placed within a virtual scene.Digital Twin: A precise 3D digital replica of a physical location or object; often used to transition seamlessly between a real location shoot and a Volume shoot.Baking: The process of pre-calculating lighting, shadows, or textures into a 3D scene to save processing power; once a scene is baked, those specific lighting elements cannot be changed in real-time.Sandbox: A non-final digital environment used by the Director and DP during Virtual Scouting to experiment with blocking and lighting before the environment is optimized for the final shoot.Real-Time Rendering: The ability of a computer (using a game engine) to generate high-fidelity images at 24 frames per second or higher,...
