Blackmagic Design has issued a voluntary recall of all Blackmagic PYXIS 12K cameras manufactured before serial number 14221337. The company is offering a free Revision B sensor board upgrade to address image artifacts caused by a component tolerance variation, and the program will remain open for three years. The recall affects an estimated 10% of cameras that can exhibit visible image artifacts when pushing certain camera settings. The root cause has been traced to a tolerance variation in an electronic component on the original sensor board. What makes the situation more complicated is that some customers who initially reported the issue had their cameras replaced by resellers, only to receive units from the same affected batch, meaning the replacement cameras exhibited the same problem. As a result, Blackmagic Design has determined it cannot guarantee the performance of any PYXIS 12K shipped before serial number 14221337 and has opted for a full recall of those units. A redesigned sensor board To resolve the issue, Blackmagic Design has developed a Revision B sensor board for the PYXIS 12K. According to the company, every camera that has been sent to their support offices for repair in recent months has already received this upgraded board automatically. And while only a fraction of cameras display artifacts visible to the eye, Blackmagic Design says its internal testing has shown measurable improvements on every single camera that received the upgrade, not just those exhibiting obvious problems.
