Disney and OpenAI Reach Agreement to Bring Characters From Across Disney’s Brands to Sora

Disney has become the first major content licensing partner for OpenAI’s Sora platform in a three-year agreement that will allow users to generate short videos featuring over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars properties. The deal includes a $1 billion equity investment from Disney and will see the company deploy OpenAI’s technology across Disney+ and other products, with character-based content expected to launch in early 2026. The partnership represents a significant shift in how major entertainment companies approach generative AI technology. Under the agreement, Sora will enable users to create short, prompted social videos that can be viewed and shared, drawing from an extensive library of animated, masked, and creature characters, along with costumes, props, vehicles, and iconic environments from Disney’s portfolio. Fans will also have access to characters from Encanto, Frozen, Inside Out, Moana, Monsters Inc., Toy Story, Up, and Zootopia.
