Samsung NX1, $1300 4K flagman

  • Very questionable review. Bad methodology and poorly defended as well. Don't know why they have a hard on for the NX1. Sure got eosdhd pissed off though!

ps, where is Adam Wilt when you need him?

  • @DMZ that's the wiser's way - with both hands (twisting the neck of knowledge) :P

For people who has the Nx1 and don't want to use either Samsung soft or hybrid, here's another free app (also invoking ffmpeg) to convert to h264 or proRES - direct download link -- http://www.mydiyworld.net/?p=1805&aid=1815&sa=1

    What this software can do?
    * Can convert multiple source movies.
    * Can set target directory where the converted files will be created.
    * Can encode to H.264 or ProRes 422 Proxy, LT, SQ and HQ codec.
    * Can resize the 4K source to 1080P or keep the original resolution.
    * Supports one or mutlitple files Drag & Drop. If a folder is dropped, it will be used as “Output Folder”, otherwise all MP4 files will be added in “Source Files” list.

    PS
If by any chance you'll use hybrid, for downscale purposes use bicubic spline not lanczos and remember with Karl's script you can get proRES444 output (slower 'cause only working in kostya)

  • On the other end, if you put the Camera5d review and all the comments together, you can gather useful information from it. And the entertainment value is a bonus :).

  • About the Camera5d review, most funny thing is Andrew Reed which is a fucking clown with no spine whatsoever taking advantage of the conjecture (smart-ass, that is what he's good at) trying to sound impartial and unbiased; just fucking LOL... in my dictionary there's nothing more dangerous that someone who has the skills (does't imply having an engineer degree, which is the case) but absolutely ZERO ETHICS at all

  • The bummer is it would be nice to know real dynamic range from an unbiased or at least reliable source. Either way the camera seems like it will make may people more than happy even if the people are not strictly "pro videographers". I bet a few of those types of professionals will like it as well ; ) Plus when it doesn't sell as hope for Samsung will either lower the price and/or hopefully add some features like rack focus speed and flat/log profiles. Just matter of time before they put this sensor is a sub $1000 camera body with same 4k video quality - that would make a great second and third camera.

  • Oh yes, the camera5d review is a bad joke. the author must have been drunk. I sell my GH4 and all the lens stuff for the nx1 and I'm really happy now. no juddering ois lenses, great aps-c fullsensor readout without cropping, a wonderful autofokus, very clean video with nice colors and whitebalance out of box, a fantastic tilt oled lcd and so on. For all this stuff, I can live with the rendertime for h265 to prores. I don't understand, what does he mean with "absolute useless for video" ???

  • @DMZ very interesting indeed :)

  • If you are considering buying the NX1, I suggest you do not read the http://www.cinema5d.com/lab-review-samsung-nx1-video-mode-frustrating/ review without the comments below that review.

  • If one didn't know better, it'd look like they did it intentionally.

Samsung tried to create something bold with h.265 in the NX1 and a nice video image in high resolution, but the implementation didn’t quite work. The camera cripples itself in so many ways it becomes almost useless.

We tested all ISO settings from 100 up to the camera’s limit of 25600. Interestingly this is the first camera we ever saw that has a consistent 10.1 stops without any shift in brightness throughout the whole range up until ISO 3200.

I am not fan of their "lab tests", DR measurements looks wrong (as their previous issues with same test), and idea to use old iMac for conversion without understanding H.265 is weird.

  • The Camera Store NX1 review:

  • Does this mean this cam has a great hack future? Easy to hack?

No, it does not mean anything.

  • allegedly the nx1 uses tizen, some version of linux. Does this mean this cam has a great hack future? Easy to hack?

  • To answer the question posed earlier by myself and addressed also by DMZ:

"the NX1 has a front curtain electronic shutter, so not completely silent..."

says the author of this page: https://www.wimarys.com/samsung-nx1-extensive-iso-test/

  • @brianl Are you sure NX1 has silent shutter? I am sorry but I did not find any reference of it in the manual. Would you please provide a source of your statement?

  • PowerDirector 13 has stability issues. It has currently 137 1-star ratings out of 397 reviews on Download.com. The spec looks great but it will need a bunch of patches before it becomes useable. (http://download.cnet.com/CyberLink-PowerDirector/3000-13631_4-10483012.html)

For the brave ones: PD 13 Ultra is on sale for around $70 for the next 3 days: http://www.cyberlink.com/stat/events/enu/2014/Q4/PPC_PDR_BlackFriday_B/index.jsp

  • @ninetto I do not know about the shatter noise since I do not have the camera yet, but NX1 does not have a full electronic shutter (besides for video, of course). It has a function Samsung calls "E-Shutter," but in reality, this is only an electronic first curtain (see NX1 manual, page 179; a link to the manual was posted one page back).

  • How is the shutter noise/performance on the NX1? So many Sony a7s owners complain about the explosive noise of the shutter on the a7s.

Does the NX1 have a "silent" i.e. electronic shutter only option like the Panasonic gh4, lx100 etc?

The Samsung NX1 is currently the highest resolution APS-C camera available offering a 28.2 megapixel sensor, and in order to give good noise performance, the camera is the World's first to feature a backlit APS-C CMOS sensor, instead of a standard CMOS sensor. The camera is also capable of shooting at an extremely impressive 15fps at full resolution with continuous AF active.
