Panasonic GM1 official topic

  • I just sold mine because a friend needed a second camera and was willing to shoot 1080p. I was not using it. I prefer the Olympus OM-EM5 miii for a small compact light weight camera as it shoot 4K and better auto focus.

I used the GM1 for my Glidecam camera but I sold that as well. With a tiny lens it could not be beat for small size. Speaking of tiny lenses, the 12-32 kit lens OIS started acting up and later fell apart.

  • I still have mine! The later sensors are better, it doesn't have 4K, auto white balance, autofocus, IS &c are all dated. But I still have mine because with the 14mm pancake it fits in a pocket.
    OTOH, so does my phone...........

  • @DrDave

What exactly "dated" means? :-) If it fits the purpose it is superb.

For most people Samsung NX300 kit is not dated also :-)

  • It is cool. But it is dated.

  • No time limit on mine. Also you can hack the time limit. As lovely as the camera is, it isn't 4K.

  • I did just notice that if in MP4 mode, there are limits of 29:59 or less. But AVCHD, no limit on mine.

  • Revisiting this thread in January of 2020. I just got a GM1, updated the stock firmware. I put in a Samsung 64GB card, set for 24fps AVCHD, full HD - set it in movie mode - hit record. It blew right past the 30 minute mark. It generated 2 files in total. First file went about 25.5 minutes and created a single 4.29Gb file, then kept going another 22+ minutes (3.8Gb) until new (uncharged) battery almost ran out. It's an American version of the camera, I didn't do anything unusual to it. And it appears to record for as long as the battery lasts. Even on the screen where it shows remaining or available record time, it shows 5hr 54m.

I wonder why it does this when so many report that it won't.

    Brad

  • Yeah, I can't remember exactly if it had the limit before. But did notice earlier in this thread some people had a version without the limit. And all my other Panasonic gear here in Australia hasn't had limits. Ah well, just have to buy something new! GX85 looks nice.

  • But it also introduced the 29min record limit. Switched back to PAL and the limit is still there.

This thing sounds impossible. Until Panasonic did some weird thing.

I think limit is just hard encoded.

  • Hi, I have the Australian version of this little guy which I'm pretty sure had no recording limit for video. I did the pal->NTSC trick to try out 30fps for smoother motion. But it also introduced the 29min record limit. Switched back to PAL and the limit is still there. Doh!! Anyone know how I could return to original AU state? Hoping to use this as a locked off extra angle for events and stuff. Thanks in advance.

  • This is my love! A chic, beautiful camera for travelers.

  • It is certainly useable, especially in good light with a fast shutter speed, but florescent lighting gives it fits.

  • Thanks, so do you think that e-shutter on GM1 is that bad in terms of rolling shutter and strobing lights, or it's still usable, i've read that for most of the people it didn't cause almost any of the related problems, unless in extreme situations..

  • Doh! Much to my surprise as soon as I removed my lens the GM1 did in fact switch to its electronic shutter. Mounting a c-mount lens via a dumb adapter still only allowed use of the e shutter.

I stand corrected, sorry for this misinformation.

I did confirm both the GX7 and GH4 don't do this. The gx7 might be a good choice. Still pretty compact.

I find the rolling shutter and interaction with lights causing strobing pretty limiting with the e shutter in general.

  • Thanks all for your help. The fact is that I've read some topics around the web, explaining that when using vintage lenses on GM1, due to the lack of electronic interaction with the curtain of the sensor, you can just use electronic shutter (silent mode), unless you're using the flash. Now, thats pretty weird, i'm just wondering if someone that own this camera can confirm it.

  • @badyard

if the camera is in silent mode then it will use electronic shutter

depends what mode your in some setting will be canceled out. make sure camera is in movie mode for the shutter issue

  • @ badyard

Yes you can control the SS no matter the lenses mounted, including on lens at all! Not sure why you won't not be able to, the shutter is in the camera body ...

Where did you hear you can only used the electric shutter with legacy lenses?

  • Do you guys know if the GM1 can manually control SS in Video Mode using legacy lenses? Also, i know that using legacy lenses it force you taking stills by using Electronic Shutter. Now in term of quality, do you guys think is worth using it only with electronic shutter and legacy lenses?

    Thanks

  • @badyard

    No plans for now.

  • Are there any plan for further hack developing on GM1?

  • I don't know if it is legal in the forum to put the link here? http://www.scandinavianphoto.se/produkt/1007649450/panasonic-lumix-dmc-gm1-svart-med-af-15-1-7-dg-summilux-batteri-dmw-blh7-16gb

Just remove this message if I do wrong and I tell you I am sorry!

  • In Sweden you get, the black GM1 + Summilux 15mm /f1,7 + 16gb memorycard + extra battery, new in box, price 5990 sek (Swedish Crown). It is the same price as if you buy only the lens. I could not resist, I bought one box yesterday.

  • Note that Russia now is best place to get GM1 kits :-) So, if you have friends, get them.

  • I bought mine (the orange one) used and body only on ebay for less than half this price. Oh God, this thing is so tiny! Smaller than my already little BMPCC! I´m loving the image quality and portability. The automatic features are fast, but the touch commands takes some time to get used to. Still fighting with the manual mode to work things my way... a manual lens helped me a lot on that ;o)

  • What do you guys think of the Blue one? Looks better than I thought it would. Overpriced though.

    http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/DMC-GM1KA

  • I ended up selling my GH3 which I normally fly on my steady cam as well as use with my Rode VideoMic Pro so when I need to run my steady cam and camera audio I rigged this up with the GM1 and Olympus f2.0 12mm and the Zoom H4N. It worked out pretty well but the lack of a tilting screen did mean more crouching then usual.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1 squeezes excellent image-quality comparable to modern mirrorless digital cameras and fast performance into a compact camera-size body. This alone justifies this digital camera as a compelling offer.

  • Yeah I am happy with the riser but not sure I would mount a Sigma 18-35 on the GM1 on a tripod though ;)

  • @grisnjam DO you happy with your tripod riser ? @Vitaliy_Kiselev trying to avoided. Also can't find cheap tripod mount adapter with aperture ring:)

  • Im thinking to get GM1 but can't test if plate would fit somehow. Also it is small but maybe mount is same strong enough to hold that heavy lens?

You need to mount lens on tripod (via ring mount or such) and after this attach camera :-)

  • Do you guy have any expiriance or guess with mounting Sigma 18-35 (on tripod). Im thinking to get GM1 but can't test if plate would fit somehow. Also it is small but maybe mount is same strong enough to hold that heavy lens?

  • Hi! I start loving this camera for its size. Pitty that the battery is off so soon, and actually I did not work out the grade yet. There can be done so much more in that area. GM1 with 14-42mm and mk II vari ND + 8mm cam pistol grip + selfmade loupe.

  • Hey everybody I'm looking for a camera to use at my job that may occasionally need green screen footage.

I have been using my own equipment (hacked panasonic gh2) and have awesome results, but I'm drafting a budget up for equipment that should already be on hand at the site, not my own personal stuff. All I need now is to add a camera.

I take a lot of product photography and sometimes film people working, the GH2 seemed good for that. But I used a high bit rate on my videos, will using a GM-1 have problematic results if the bit rate is lower? I know it takes awesome video that's close to the GH3, both cameras which have better dynamic range than my gh2, but will Ultra Key work just as well in Adobe premiere using GM-1 footage?

I'm aiming for the GM-1 since it's cheaper than the GH3 and good form factor. But would it be better if I used a different camera?

    Thanks!

  • This made me raise an eyebrow as the fact up until now has been that the GM1 includes no possible way of live view output on HDMI or the AV/USB connector. By reading the info and watching the videos closely I managed to conclude that the Dronexpert mount use composite video from the GM1 rather than HDMI, because he would mention somewhere that the RX100 require the included HDMI-cable while the GM1 use a video cable. In one of the videos where the Phantom is flying with the GM1 it is pretty clear that a tiny cable goes into the AV port. It also seem to work perfectly during flight. Did anyone try using a Panasonic AV-cable fitted to the AV/USB on the GM1 to confirm whether this works or not? I've been trying to get hold of the cable but has forgotten to push Pana to supply me with one. :) This kind of raised some hope of using it for FPV again... I'm using the Ricoh GR which is also fabulous for the P2 but I always like to have the option of shooting with the GM1 aerial.

The sensor at the heart of the GM1 is similar to the one in the mighty GX7. It's therefore came as no surprise at all to find that its images are stunningly beautiful.

  • It's true that the very low mass can be an issue as far as vibration, I have used some the 14-45 IS zoom, as well as a fly cam, but I would say for handheld, walking around or in a rig it is so small it is easy to bump a bit, but even with a GH2 sized cam you will have almost the same problem.

Forgot to mention that the aliasing is annoying, but no more so that than the rest of the Panasonic m43 lineup.

  • @DrDave thanks for the review. Did you use anything to stabilise handheld video? I really like the look of the images and video from this camera except lot of the footage I've seen has vibration from the camera's low size/weight.

  • Random thoughts after using this camera on the road for two months: First of all, both as a video cam and a stills cam, this is a very compact item. I've mostly been shooting with the superb 14/2.5 Panasonic pancake, and the two together make a very compact combination. I routinely appreciate the absolutely silent shutter, for photos where even a hint of a click would be annoying. Raw stills are very good, especially if you take care developing them.

For video, I found the quality improved over the GH2 in a number of ways. The colors don't looks a weird, and the noise, while still there, is more filmic (to use a completely hackneyed, overused and meaningless cliche). The noise is less clumpy.

For focusing on a tiny screen, I found the leveler especially useful as well as the focus peaking. The focus peaking on a hyperfocal lens often shows the entire scene as peaking, this is somewhat adjustable, and still usefull once you use it for a while. Finding the front line of the peaking gives you a rough but useful indicator of hyperfocal focus point for deep stage effects.

Remote use with my Nexus tablet was also useful, for example I could focus with the cam 15 feet up on a stand and still see the results from a distance, ditto for balcony shots.

The battery is not as bad as people say, but it is still a weak spot. Aftermarket batteries are even worse. Why doesn't someone make a high tech polymer battery for these cams? I can buy one for my phone.

    Focus is snappy.

The shutter speed of 50 comes in handy in Europe if you are dealing with flicker. BTW this site is very handy when traveling http://www.davidsatz.com/flickercalculator_en.html

I sometimes miss image stabilization for handheld photos in dim light.

And last, this is a tough cam. I beat the crap out of it. Also, someone knocked it out of my hand at a party and the cam went flying 5 meters across a tile floor. I thought is was for sure the end, but, amazingly, only a tiny flake of paint less than 1mm knicked off (do not try this to see if it works).

Minuses: for sure one problem is that it is hard to push the buttons and ovoid the screen when using.

The small size makes for a nice addition the the gear bag for the traveling videographer.

  • @DAMALAMUTENSAM I added a WLAN AP to my copter. But range is bad. GM1 does not output signal otherwise as far as I know.

  • Hi everybody, I use a gm1 for aerial photos with my quadrocopter. For installing at the next step data transmission to the ground station I need a live view signal from hdmi or usb. Does anybody now how to manage it? With normal hdmi (D) or usb cable it doesn't work. Thanks a lot. DAMALAMUTENSAM

  • @vitaliy

Thanks. Seems like panasonic want this to be more an available light camera in the interests of keeping it small.

  • @Vitaliy

    and @Manu4Vendetta

...you didn't look at the comment on the vimeo above ?

  • @nosh

As far as I understand it - it is physical limitation due to shutter mechanism used. They wanted to make it super small.

  • Am thinking of getting this great little beauty. Anyone know if there are any chances of the 1/50 max flash synch speed being addressed in future firmware updates?

  • @Manu4Vendetta

ok...I'll bite. Is this Bs or what ?

  • I'm stealing my wife's GM1 for a wedding shoot next week, along with the 3 GH2's, a 7D and T2i my crew uses, should be fun to see how it fits in :)

  • The quality of the footage this tiny camera produces is spectacular. It's ridiculously sharp and I've done nothing to increase that. It just looks so much better than anything I've been able to get from my A7 or A7r no matter what lenses or codec I use.

  • @deathtoprint thanks for the info, mulling this one over right now.

  • I just purchased an NTSC ALL Black kit (w black kit lens) that I found out only Canada and Japan have available. $669 on sale in Canadian dollar, but i am in USA so w USD it was even CHEAPER! Sale is whole month of June w free shipping.

I have no affiliation but finding this NTSC version was a huge PITA so figured was worth sharing, PLUS discounted so also worth sharing.

my USD total was $662.38 shipped ($45.00 shipping to USA from canada insured)

    http://www.adencamera.com/product-overviewer.asp?ProdID=4595&Category=5

  • I have the black one...looks good.

there appears to be a Native American version. So why doesn't B&H or Adorama carry the Black now. I'm thinking maybe I should just try to get the black US body, and buy the lens separate in black.

  • I want the 60P and 24P, etc... anyone point me to the best place/deal on this or any sales currently going on for best price?

ebay, any US body. and it is not doing 50p/60p as I remember, only 50i/60i.

  • I'm having a hard time discerning if this camera is available w/ the NTSC shooting modes/rates. I can't seem to find one labeled as NTSC, however, i AM able to find them labeled as PAL.

I saw there is a PV member discount which is great but its only PAL version, so not good for me. I want the 60P and 24P, etc... anyone point me to the best place/deal on this or any sales currently going on for best price?

Want to purchase possibly this week.

  • It's so strange that my pal GM1 only works with the following combination.

    1080 50i shutter speed = or >60 720 50p shutter speed = 100

    Smooth video look and panning.

Really bad motion when shooting 24p and 25p. What's wrong?

  • I’d say that while they have very slight differences in image quality, these two cameras are on the same level and I wouldn’t choose which camera based on these slight differences, but rather the other features each camera has versus the other. IQ aside, when looking at features they are vastly different machines, both providing a different set of pros and cons.

    http://tysonrobichaudphotography.wordpress.com/2014/05/01/panasonic-battle-gx7-vs-gm1/

  • DSTE Batteries. They are rated for 1000 mAh, actual is maybe 550-580, less than the stock battery. Cheap but "shorties".

  • My quick notes on the GM1:

No matter how many times you read it is small, it is actually smaller.

IMHO you want the all black cam with the all black panny 14mm pancake prime. This combo is a serious looker. The 14mm is narrower than the 20 and fits perfectly for a pocket cam, with the 14mm the edge of the lens is even with the base of the cam.

IQ for stills and video and incremental notch above the GH2. DR rolloff is a bit better.

Colors look more organic. On the GH2 the colors sometimes look fake. There is a slight blue shift, but that is better than a green shift. WB is customizable.

Noise is better controlled. There still is noise.

I don't see a jump in sharpness. GH2 with hack is very sharp. Nonetheless, very good vid from this cam.

Battery is small and crappy. You can buy a power adapter. However the battery gave me 1 hour and 55 minutes continuous video recording.

Although the manual lists 64Gb as the max, I had no trouble with my 128gb card.

Screen is very nice, and the fact that it is a touch screen is really very handy. You get tons of soft buttons. Drag and drop whatever you want onto the quick menu.

HDR mode, and the night equivalent, are fast and snappy. The cam fires off a bunch of shots, and combines them in cam. No raw backup, but you can of course shoot raw, then combine in post. No sweep panorama that I can find.

    Timed photos--yup.

DxO 9 with prime will wring every drop out of your raw files, if you want to fuss over them. Try the free trial.

The silent shutter is totally fracking silent if you need to switch it on. You can set a button, and the only sound you will hear is the lens focusing, which you won't hear in MF. Completely silent.

I was able to hook it up wirelessly to my Nexus 7 for full cam control, preview and postview. The second gen Nexus 7 has an awesome screen, and this is all very trippy. So for example you can put the cam on a tripod, and take pictures from elsewhere in the room. I had read that this does not work for video, so I tried it out and you can pull focus while the video was rolling. It isn't like having an external monitor, but of course you have remote control which is very cool. In dark areas, the focus may hunt while pulling, which is the basic issue with m4/3 cams and other noncamcorder cams.

While recording video, you can dial the aperture and shutter speed up and down remotely while recording, using the Nexus 7 (and I'm assuming the other apps as well).

Autofocus is fast and accurate. Focus peaking is customizable and actually very useful, even though I don't use it. It works. In fact, the peaking seem to work as well or better with a sharp legacy lens.

Yes, it does show highlight clipping, if desired.

Very minor things: the door to the card and battery are on the bottom of the cam. You could easily damage the tiny door, just like the tiny doors on other cams. If you had an adapter you could maybe get to the card while on a tripod but iffy. The lugs are ugly.

Others: The screen is almost the same size as the GH2 and better quality, even though the cam is tiny. If I had a few extra hundred I think maybe the kit deal is a good idea from Vitaliy's deals. The kit lens is very nice and you could always sell it for more than the price difference. Saving up for the GH4, or would have gone for the kit. It is hard until you see the cam to deal with the size issue--a tiny kit lens on this cam would be a plus. As well as the 14mm pancake. Anything larger than the 20mm and it looks like you have a lens with a phone on the back.

What's not to like: nothing, really.

  • Now that we have the firmware, just a baby step to hacking the GM1 for 4K. This would have made a great April fools joke.

  • Firmware v1.1 released

    • Connection problem with Apple iOS devices via Wi-Fi is fixed.

  • @1anentropic get it from deals. mine records longer. 1 week ago I powered it externally and recorded 5h nonstop to a 64GB card.

  • Here is a gallery test I did last month with GM1, plus a Lumix 14mm and a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 and a Seculine SL3 Loupe:

RAW pictures processed with Lightroom 5.

  • Just checked and I only get HDMI output on play back. Dug though the menus to no avil. Looks like no live view HDMI.

  • Clean HDMI on the GM1? Anyone?

  • To ISO 25,600 (with Zuiko 45mm f1.8) its near to my 5N to 6,400. Great job Panasonic.

  • I have had mine for a few months now. I am just an amateur, but like it so much I pick it up first and not the hacked GH2 I have! Video quality is excellent as is the kit lens. The main reason I like it so much is size and peaking. It can be used in tight spots. If you use a Go Pro for its size (not being waterproof) like in the corner of a car the GM1 is a great replacement. It fits tight places but gives much more control.

I have read on other forums where the GM1 peaking is useless...not true. It does not work in all situations, but when it works it is a huge help with focus. I have the peaking set on orange as not too many things I shoot are orange it shows up fairly well. One main problem with my old GH2 is the focus.

Largest problem I have had is accidentally touching the cursor/dial on the back and changing a setting by accident.

It is great to use in public no one suspects your are filming.

  • And here is the GM1 with the VF-4 Loupe from Carry Speed. I was quite surprised that it fit the tiny GM1. All of the buttons except for the flash release are accessible too but the lack of a real hand grips means you kind of have to hold it by the loupe itself :)

    image

You can see in the second photo that in order to get the loupe to sit flush on the LCD the baseplate needs to be set all the way forward. This works with the 12-35mm kit lens since it is so tiny and has no overhang, but virtually any other lens (including the 20mm pancake) will protrude below the body and block the plate. I have the GM1 tripod riser coming soon which might help here.

Damn that's tiny - I'm thinking of getting one(for my wife of course :-) ) and pairing it with the 14-42 pancake.

  • I'm loving my wife's GM1. The image is fantastic, and it's a pretty fun camera to use. the 12-35mm compact zoom is pretty sharp as well. Though, I'm looking forward to putting the 14mm f2.5 on there.

  • Gm1 the best!

  • @TATZU

I sold my GH2 a while ago but here is the GH3, GX7 and GM1:

  • Very impressed by the low noise and video quality of the GM1!

However new cameras are usually restricted by the 29 min video recording limit, so I always keep an eye on the hack list: http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/ptool/cameras-status-faq ...I see GM1 hasn't made it on there yet.

I understand the 29 min limit is to avoid an EU tax on camcorders, so I was wondering are GM1s for other markets free of this restriction? eg Hong Kong, USA ?

  • @chrisappleseed I just downloaded the original ProRes file and I can't see a hint of noise in the opening ISO 3200 shot! I can't believe there wasn't any noise reduction at all!

From some other videos I've seen online, I was worried about the low bitrate for high motion shots, but the waterfall in your video didn't macroblock as much as some other videos I've seen. I only wish that the sensor had better DR, but I might still get it as a B-cam since it's so tiny and versatile.

  • Can i get a still photo comparison between this and the gh2? and this is the Dynamic Range "Really" Better on the GM1? how many stops? Because i love the resolution of my gh2 but the Dynamic Range Sucks TBH.

  • @kin689 Thanks for your viewing! For the shoot, a variable ND2-400 filter was used. Grading is done in Premiere Pro for a more cinematic coloring look. No noise reduction in camera or in post. And I love the better high ISO performance and dynamic range the GM1 provides, it surely has better video DR than GH2 (GM1 uses the same new sensor seen on GX7, newer sensors definitely have improved DR). In fact, the GM1 have more details in the blacks and a slightly more in the highlights. So far I have used the GM1 to shoot in several low-light situations, and I would say the highest acceptable ISO on it is 2000. Pushing all way up to 3200 is not an issue at all without reducing noise in post. I will post more films shot with the GM1, stay tuned!

  • @chrisappleseed That's probably one of the best looking GM1 videos I have seen. I knew the ISO performance of the GM1 is good, but I didn't realize how good it was until you mentioned the first shot was at 3200!

If you don't mind, I have a few questions. What type of ND did you use if any? Was there any grading? How does the GM1's DR compare to the GH2? For me, the highest acceptable ISO on the GH2 is 640, what would you say is the highest acceptable ISO for the GM1?

Again, great looking video and please share more if you can, thanks!

  • Filmed on the Panasonic GM1. 1080/24p mode. Handheld. Two lens - Lumix 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 & Olympus 45mm f/1.8

I have GH1, GH2 and G6. Comparing with GH2 (hacked) & G6, the GM1 seems to have more striking colour and picks up subtle shades in more detail than the G6 & GH2 (hacked). In fact the video performance of GM1 is on par with the GH3. Or even better in low light. *The cave shot at the beginning of the video was shot at ISO 3200. As you can see the camera holds up very well, noise - even at ISO 3200 is almost completely absent.

Stay tuned for my next GM1 film that will be focused in low light shots.

  • I have been shooting with the GM1 extensively for the past 2 months and I have finally gathered some of my impressions and pictures and wrote something like a personal review about the camera and, specially, my way of using it and integrating it in my usual workflow. To summarize it, I can say that this tiny camera is a beast and it delivers a punch high above its weight, that's for sure. I'm amazed at how close I can get with it plus the small kit zoom lens to my usual combo of GH3 plus the f2.8 zoom.

@jonpais I agree with you completely, I shoot with both cameras as well, and they make a perfect couple!

You can read my review and see plenty of images in my blog: http://gonzalobroto.blogspot.com/2014/02/gm1-me-review-of-how-we-met-each-other.html

  • re: Luminous Landscape review: now I understand why the lack of an EVF was such a dealbreaker for Michael Reichmann. Working in bright light, judging exposure is next to impossible, which is why I'd never recommend the GM1 as a primary camera. Still, I always carry both the GM1 and the GH3, and use the former 90% of the time. And the LCD on the GM1 is much clearer than its big brother's.

  • Sorry if this has been answered before, but after I white balance and begin shooting, the color I see on the LCD doesn't match at all what I saw when I was making WB adjustments. I have monitor set at live view. However, files look fine when I import them for editing...

  • The GM1 is capable of taking really high quality images. The sensor is as good as it gets in MFT, and the supplied kit lens is a notch above just about any zoom kit lens that I recall.

  • factory defaults did the trick! Back to happy again!

  • Who has an Idea which settings might have effect on THAT? GM1 + 20mm f1.7 Pana I tried sharpness... But it always looks like that. also attached a grab from GH2, which is OK from my point of view. Both extracted from 1080p24

  • Any leaks concerning some future lenses? I would love some good and tiny primes (50/1.4). As it is, LX7 is still a good choice for half the price.

By the way, LX7 is impossible to find in Japan anymore!!!! Does it mean new model coming soon?? Or just everything sold out for Christmas???

  • Readers interested in seeing how the GM1 handles video at ISO800 can check out these random shots I made in a dim coffee shop in Saigon. 24p, -5, -2, -1, 0. X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 lens. Most of the clips were taken at around f/3.2.

The GM1 features a very similar sensor to that found in the GX7, and as such, it provides very good dynamic range and color response. The GM1′s dynamic range might be just a little less than that of the GX7, but you’ll hardly notice.

  • Amazing pictures for the size! 1080p24

  • Nowadays I favor a camera that fits into my life: one that I carry to the office, that I take with me when running errands or that I pack for business trips. Yet I don't want to compromise on quality: fast and total control over the exposure, live histogram, responsiveness, a good selection of lenses, RAW files and Full HD video are essential. The Lumix GM1 manages to pack all of that in the tiniest body ever.

    http://marchal.com/lumix-gm1-pocket-camera/

  • How's the 720p 60frames looks compared to , let's say, the 1080/60 on the GX7, is there a big difference? I would like to have 60p and that's why I was looking to the GX7, but I must say that the GM1 is very appealing... and I've found a nice kit with booth the 12-32 and the 20mm for less than just the GX7 body.

  • So there is no HDMI out for the GM1 during recording??

I don't understand why Panasonic doesn't allow this for so many great cameras (GX7, GM1, G6, etc), as they'd be so much even better if you could use a monitor with them!

  • Surprised with the Mega OIS performance of the kitlens at relatively long exposures (1/4 to 1/2 second handheld). Power OIS is supposed to fare better in terms of long exposure times at wide angle, but this little one is stellar. :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/cablefreak/11579840334/

  • My first attempt at a mini-rig for the GM1, works a treat but it's frustrating that there is no way to input remote shutter. I have done an identical setup for my GH2 that has the trigger fully functional for REC start/stop. :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/cablefreak/11665818766/

  • The GM1 is a simply amazing little device. I've been shooting with it for a couple weeks now, and I prefer the colors and rendition to the GH3, though it does seem to suffer from aliasing, even with sharpness turned down. As far as picture profile, I set at standard, with contrast -4, sharpness -2, saturation -2 and NR at 0 (because I still haven't picked up denoiser software). The GM1 seems to have much less sharpening and higher contrast than the GH3 at the default setting. With the 12-35 f/2.8 lens, handling is no problem (I've got a leather case, which helps with grip), but things get pretty shaky with the 35-100 zoom, since I can't seem to hold the camera steady with outstretched arms. The OLED screen on the GH3 was a big selling point for me, but I prefer the monitor on the GM1, it's very clear and easy as pie to judge exposures. I don't find the peaking to be all that useful, as it's usually in poor lighting conditions that I need some focusing assistance the most, and without anything shiny or contrasty, it's practically useless. At the moment, I only have two batteries, but if you're considering buying the camera, it wouldn't hurt to pick up at least two extra, as they don't last very long. Panasonic claims something like 40 minutes actual shooting time at 60i I believe, but I'm not so sure it lasts that long in practice, and I shoot exclusively at 24p. Anyhow, as you can see from the samples above (especially compared to the BMPCC, the GM1 holds its own, and I would recommend it as a B camera without hesitation.

  • Would someone that has this camera be able to let us know if it has clean HDMI out? I don't think anyone has confirmed this yet.

  • Is this camera better than RX100 mark ii?

  • Got one! Not sure what to think so far. Not sure it handles moving objects as well as a hacked GH-2. Here are a few clips from around the house today. All shot 720P 60 with 125 shutter. Shot in quiet mode. I know there are some focusing and exposure issues just messing around. None of this was graded or adjusted at all. Rendered at 30 fps. Some pics of the peaking set at orange at the end.

  • Image quality from the Panasonic GM1 is what we expected - very good. The kit lens is nice, especially considering its small size, and adding a lovely 20mm F1.7 prime takes the whole thing up a level.

  • How long does it record a single clip on the battery? And does the file spanning work OK?

  • @kendalloz, no worries! Pretty in pink. :P @kellar42, the GM1 on a brushless would bare down the Phantom too much, but it works to put it on a simple anti-vib plate and a tilt mount. You won't be able to hook up a remote release and WiFi is not an option (except maybe on the Vision 5.8GHz model) but you can set it up for time-lapse and with the 20/1.7 or 14/2.5 or the zuiko 12/2.0 you should be OK on the scales and shoot some tack sharp aerials. I'm not too sure about the 12-32 kit lens whether the PowerOIS works good with micro vibrations or not. Don't bother testing with the Canon PowerShot S95 or that series. Its IS wobbles like crazy at any shutter speeds. :) I would say that the GM1 on the Phantom is quite ideal, but you would probably not be able to get a downlink, HDMI is supposedly not in use during shooting, same with composite out, and just adding 5.8GHz Tx and wiring would probably push it. The flight time should be somewhere around 6-7 minutes, tops. :)

  • Thanks cablefreak76. Hmmm...buy one now or wait with Vitaliy for the pink one to be released ;)

  • Looking very good, guys. I wonder if someone could build a gimbal for this on a DJI phantom.

  • What a year !

    Plastic iphones and metal galaxies.

Bodycap lenses and lenscap bodies :)

I just received mine, it is fantastic :)

  • The GM1 with kit lens does stabilize also for video, and it works great. Nothing to post yet with the kit lens (just filmed my daughter fooling around) but I did a little short with the Nokton 25 and 24p mode. The camera is absolutely fantastic, I have 2 GH3's and a hacked GH2, it's like the perfect pocket rocket cinema camera for us enthusiasts. The low light performance at 24p is stellar, much better than the GH3 due to the new sensor and true pixel binning. I would assume that we're seeing the first glimpse of performance from the 4K "GH4" camera... video is really smooth, gradation and highlight clipping beautifully, good detail in shadows. I do find native 24p slightly better than 25p though, probably due to the 50i wrapper messing things up, it's like with the GH2 25p mode but slightly better, I think. In addition it's a remarkable time-lapse machine. It can handle RAW-timelapse images in full res from the GH3 or itself, and render 1080p MP4 videos straight off the card. Say you're out shooting time consuming night time lapses with the GH3 and keep the GM1 warm in your pocket (because the battery is really small ;) and switch cards between takes and put them in the GM1 as a preview machine. It's one of the few missing features in the GH3 but if you have the GM1 it's even better because it frees up the GH3 for the next take. :)

It seems to do pretty OK with night landscape astrophotography, like ISO3200 @ 20-30sec, just best to keep LNR ON because the sensor heats up pretty much in that small case, no surprises. But I thought it would be much worse in that area. I might even have one of those JOBY tiny iPhone/smartphone legs in my pocket along with the GM1, on a clear night when walking home from the train. :) It's funny, it even outperforms the E-M1 in the long exposure department, because of the issue the E-M1 is having compared to the noiseless E-M5, the GM1 is no worse, perhaps even a bit better. :)

    My first footage:

  • I understand that this camera does not have IBIS just a stabilized kit lens...just want someone to say "yes" or "no" that the stabilization in the lens works in video mode. Looks like it probably does but just want to confirm from someone first-hand. Would also be nice if someone reported on the peaking.

  • I think the confusion is that the kit lens has OIS which works in all modes, but the IBIS only works in stills mode with non-OIS lenses.

  • Can someone who has the camera in hand confirm that the stabilization works in video mode with the kit lens? On page 210, the manual (Thanks DrDave) indicates that "normal" stabilization works in video mode but on page 191 it seems to indicate that stabilization does not work in video mode as the video icon is not highlighted.

Overall neat features in a small camera. Peaking (that you can change the color) and histogram and full manual video control and wi fi. Too bad no 1080 60p but it makes sense that heat might be an issue in that mode.

  • Yes. It was shot in 720P for sure. Too bad, it´s not supporting 50P / 60P in 1080P mode.

But it looks VERY nice for such a small body (and for 720P) - At least to me. ^^ One thing is clear: The GM1 is definitely one of the best 2nd body options for m4/3 users. (Or for users, which are searching for the smalles possible high-quality camera system.)

  • That was nice.to me it looked like it was shot 60p? And slowed down ? So was this shot at 720p 60fps?

  • Nice! well shot!

  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev curiously enough BHPhoto and Adorama and Unique Photo and other US websites list Panasonic GM1 as both NTSC/PAL

But, my other question is if 25P mode on PAL versions is the real 25p or just wrapped in 50i?

  • As far as I know it is not PAL/NTSC camera, non of Panasonic cameras is such.

  • Is GM1 a world camera, PAL/NTSC? I've read that the 25P mode is really wrapped in 50i stream. Perhaps, in Europe or Asia the 25P is really 25P? Or it the same everywhere?

    Thank you!

The 16 megapixel Micro Four Thirds format Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1, its maker's smallest CSC ever, provides proof that good things really can occasionally come in small packages. DMC-GM1's quality is right up there with cameras that are both physically bigger and cost more. If you loved what you saw of the output of the GX7 but felt the body would be better even smaller, then the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1 could be well worth giving a proverbial spin

  • @simurg You cannot, the external monitor would only work in Playback mode.

  • Hi, can i use this camera with external monitor (av or hdmi)

  • When does the GM1 start shipping?

  • It's extremely quick to take photos, capturing its first shot within a second of switching on, focusing in around 200ms and capturing a shot every half a second for both JPEGs and RAW. Continuous shooting was at 4.8fps with fixed focus, and managed an impressive 4.2fps with continuous autofocus.

This little camera produces photos that compare well with SLRs' output. Colours were lifelike, with expertly chosen automatic settings and impeccable autofocus performance. Details in JPEGs were crisp and smooth, and the lens performed superbly into the corners of frames.

  • @grisnjam The Sailfish looks pretty solid… I wrote to Mastor inquiring about availability of their stabilizers, but they couldn't give me any pricing information. Anyhow, they said they wouldn't ship to Vietnam, or something to that effect :( Funny, until the GM1 appeared, I never would have considered buying another "compact" camera…

  • @cantsin

Yes the GM1 seems to have manual movie mode like the GH3/GX7. From this review:

    http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_GM1/

"Many of the features are inherited from the G6 and GX7 too, so you get autofocus down to -4EV, focus peaking, timelapse and stop motion modes, manual movie exposures, Wifi, seven-frame bracketing and optional silent operation. Indeed as far as software features are concerned the GM1 is essentially the same as the GX7, only without the tone curves."

    @jonpais

Being able to pop the GM1 with something like the a Oly 12mm F2.0 in C-AF mode onto a brushless stabilizer made for a point and shoot should be pretty amazing. The Sailfish SF-1 looks like a good candidate as well:

    http://cheesycam.com/mastor-tech-motorized-gimbal-stabilizers/

  • Does anyone know whether the GM1 will have full manual video controls? (Or will the video function be crippled like on the GF series and the GX1?)

  • Here's one I'm considering getting. I know it might seem off topic, but other owners might take the size and weight into account when trying to decide between the new Sonys, the G6, the GX7 and the GM1 to complement their GH3.

    magazine1_go2xrit_blackmagic.jpg
    435 x 290 - 22K
  • Remember the weights which gets quoted for MILCs are just for the camera body, still got to add the weight of a lens to it!

But I know my Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 is super light and wouldn't add much to it, and I guess the new pancake zoom which comes with it shouldn't way too much more if at all.

  • Am I mistaken, or does this camera at only 7 oz weigh less than the Go Pro Hero? I've been balking at purchasing a Defy gimbal for my GH3 ($2,600+), but perhaps I could buy both the GM1 and a Go Pro stabilizer for under $1,600. I'd be saving over $1,000,;the device would put much less strain on my arms; and I'd also have a second body for one of my zoom lenses. What do you think?

  • GM1 focused fairly fast despite the low light conditions. It still performed faster than any Fujifilm camera that we’ve tested and also still faster than any offering from Sony, Canon and Samsung.

  • @Butt

Electronic shutter = Innovation of the Year for MFT

It doesn't = that for the Astro Photography side and for video. This camera lacks a bulb mode because of heat issues which kills it for AP work. It also has limited but still good video because of those heat issues.

An electronic shutter is very useful for AP and video. I just wish we could have had a small camera like this that worked well for those two things.

  • Wow, that Lights in Paris thing is the best test series for a camera I've ever seen! Bravo! Actual photography, who'd of thunk? Exciting camera. My whole orientation becomes more Lumix, all the time.

  • Would love to trade in my GH2 with this. If video is as decent as G6, I just might. I love having small things, and this is a really good design.

  • We'll have both bodies (In all colors, not one as in US) and lens on deals :-)

Both GM1 and 12-32mm lens look promising. I really like the lens. Its optical quality looks decent, while being even smaller and lighter than Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 pancake and G X Vario PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6.

Panasonic wrote in the announcement: "To pursue further downsizing, every lens element is designed as slim as possible and located in minimum margin while using the fourth and fifth lens group as an O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilzier) lens unit by shifting itself, which is integrated in the LUMIX G digital interchangeable lens for the first time."

  • ohhh

Having a GX1, I am now ready to get the GX7 for christmas. But that GM1 is just too cute, and very capable obviously.

Gonna have to buy cheaper presents for familly ang friends in order to save enough and get both cameras! !!!!

  • No pink? wtf....

  • Sharp lens. Some CA. High ISO JPEG seems quite good. Nice camera overall.

  • I really like that it spanks the nikon 1 in the looks dept as well. It really is a cute little bugger isn't it?

  • Height is 1LW :)

  • I wonder if it can be hacked... 24P/30P is good enough for me!

  • Wow that is a big difference

    Z-panasonic-gm1_VsGX7.JPG

  • With the Panasonic GM1 and its electronic first curtain, though, this vibration problem should go away completely. There's no first curtain to slam into the bottom of the shutter assembly, and the very light second curtain being driven via the stepper motor should contribute little or no vibration as well.

    image

Heat-related performance limitations show up in two areas on the GM1, namely video and bulb exposure. While the GX7 can shoot 1080 video at a full 60p frame rate, the GM1 is restricted to 1080 60i or 30p. Clocking data off the sensor and processing it rapidly enough to produce 60p video just generates too much heat for the GM1's tiny envelope.

  • In the meanwhile, Panasonic is further expanding the range of LUMIX G digital interchangeable lens with the development of new LUMIX G VARIO telephoto zoom lens of 35-100mm in stylish, compact design that also matches the LUMIX GM camera.

New small 35-100mm is also coming.

    image

The GM1 also houses a new shutter mechanism. The shutter itself uses a stepping motor rather than a spring-loaded design, resulting in a significantly smaller unit. The camera's sensor initiates image capture with an electronic first curtain. Using a stepping motor limits maximum mechanical shutter speed to 1/500 sec - after that it's all electronic shutter up to a maximum shutter speed of 1/16,000 sec (yes, that's three zeros).

  • GH, G, GF, GX, GM series, great line up. yes, Creamy white color GM looks really nice @stonebat. Body size looks almost the same as the lens, so it should easily fit in a pocket.

  • @trevmar

I agree. The lens makes much more of a difference than sensor size. No way the GM1 is pocketable with the lens on it.

  • That lens on a GX7 has got to be a pretty nice package, maybe even fitting in a real pocket!

  • I am intrigued by what it can do that my LX7 cannot do (remember the 2.5 stops lost in the lens before starting to flame the sensor size :) :) Will be interesting to read the detailed PDF manual... I guess we will have to wait a few weeks for that to materialize...

  • I want this one. Creamy white color.

  • I really want to have one of those pancake zooms, cause I don't have anything 12mm wide yet. actually going for the wide angle converter on 14mm F2.5 route; but still waiting for the converter.

  • That's one small wonder! I might end up replacing my RX100 with this...

  • I've been looking for a small camera with a silent shutter for photos, this might an interesting choice since I have the lenses already, although the new pancake zoom looks interesting as well.

  • It sounds like totally silent e-shutter version 2. No mechanical shutter part at all. Let's wait and see how much rolling shutter would be improved for video recording.

Low-light autofocus will also provide outstanding speed in extreme low-light conditions, so you can continue to express your creativity when you only have the stars and streetlights to rely on.

The no mechanical shutter part is very intriguing. It does not seem to imply a global shutter. Just a very fast rolling shutter which is essentially the same thing if the rolling shutter is fast enough.

I have had tremendous luck using the electronic shutter on my GH3 with objects that don't move. Check out these shots of the moon.
