What Is a "Mary Sue"?

One of the most irritating things in movies and TV is when a character can just do things to get themselves out of trouble. They have no training, but they can fight like a warrior. They're not stunt drivers, but can handle a car better than professionals. We call these characters a "Mary Sue." And there's a specific reason we call her that type of character. Of course, there's a complicated history around this term. People have used it incorrectly (and in sexist ways) so much, we thought it was time actually to define what a "Mary Sue" means.
