at least there is a clear difference between IS in stills mode and IS in video mode. You can hear when the 5-achsis IS goes to work. That does not happen in video mode. The way the IS reacts to panning is also different. In video mode there is quite of a big lag. When you turn on IS in video mode the EM5 zooms a little in on the sensor as it is typical for software IS. There was an official statement that IS is software in video mode (sorry, I don't have a link)

  • Other good video E-M5 + Nokton 25mm F0.95

  • I would like to see if some of the IS smear would be gone if the shutter speed is set shorter.

  • but, it is certain that the 5-axis IS in video does not work?

  • Although E-M5 applies software-image-stabilization, it is impressively stable. It might be just more than software IS.

  • I like colors on EM5. GH2 shifts greens towards yellow. Those khaki firs in helicopter comparison are annoying.

  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev is possible some day try to hack bitrate of Olympus cameras? (same E-M5),

or codification of firmware makes it unfeasible?

    thanks

  • Hi Alex,

Thanks for the explanation. It looks like the EM-5 is receiving a bit more image stabilization in post? Perhaps since the EM-5 is mounted on top of the GH2, it requires more stabilization in post since any camera shake might be amplified by the longer moment arm?

  • @jjj_ri_usa

wow, so many questions! One answer: Yes I stabilize both the EM5 and the GH2 with the same settings but without skew/rolling shutter correction. It makes it much easier to spot the amount of jello because only the partial warping of the image is exposed, caused by the delay of the shutter when it rolls from top to bottom of the sensor.

I used CoreMelt Lock&Load X to pin the shots.

the GH2 has clearly more warping. The EM5 was mounted on top of the GH2.

  • Alex: What gives with the rolling shutter/jello comparison between the EM-5 and GH2? It appears as if you may have done some post production image stabilization on the EM-5 Clip? I get this impression from the black 'borders' that appear at the top of the clip for the EM5 in the last few seconds? You get the same appearance of black borders by using Mercali or some other image stabilization software in post to stabilize a hand held shot? Did you use some type of image stabilization on the EM-5 clip? If so: isn't that misleading as heck?

But, I assume there is some other explanation for the black borders jumping in and out at the top of the EM-5 clip, right? Just curious what causes that.

And: thanks for all the information you are supplying about the EM-5.

    Cheers,

    jjj

  • The DR is supercool.

  • I wonder if the in-body-software corrects rolling shutter effect, too.

  • by the way, when you hit the record button on the EM5, histogram and guides disappear and you can't change the shutter speed while the camera is rolling. :-(

  • ... but not so much from a video perspective. Who cares where the EM5 sensor is coming from and if it was used for another camera. Olympus managed to put together one of the best non full frame photo shooter. The video results are lackluster.

  • GH2 and OMD are same sensor from a stills-raw perspective, identical! http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1041&message=41359030

  • less jello/rolling shutter on the EM5!

  • @vitaliy I didn't checked for stills. It happens in video mode. Should be the same in stills mode though ... gonna try ...

  • without recording higher video bit rate, the amazing dynamic range you can get from the EM5 is completely useless. The resulting flat image would need the right grading, but the compression of the EM5 tolerates zero color work.

  • @Alex

Looking weird. Can you make some tests and upload results (both jped and separately raw in archive)?

  • if I setup every thing the same on the E-M5 and the GH2, the image of the GH2 is completely over exposed. ISO on the EM5 is 200 (lowest) and on the GH2 160. If the right exposure on the EM5 is reached at shutter of 160, the GH2 needs a shutter of 400 to reach the same result (judging from their histograms). Lens on both was a Zuiko OM 28mm set to f8.

  • If the sensor is from Sony, it makes a lot of sense...

  • Complain to Olympus and ask for a free vertical grip :)

Weather proof body + Full HD recording + Full-time IBIS would have burned the core.

  • @vitaliy

true, there is always a good reason why it is like it is. Nikon and Olympus also Fuji are trying hard. They can damage their brand by doing to much video and annoying their old user base. They need also to grow confidence in a new user base ...
