Driftwood Sedna 'Settings' for ptools 3.64d- Release 15th March 2012 ETA 01:00am

(Panasonic firmware v1.11 & ptools 3.64d '200212' required). Settings for GH2 & GF2 Lumix cameras. Stats: 24p Intra, 1080i/HBR Intra, 720 GOP3/GOP6 all settings as Orion with Sedna Matrices:-

A = High Detail matrix Good for Wide full detail shots.

B = Good allround detail matrix Great all round wide / mid shots.

C = Softer detail matrix Softer skin tonal detail.

*You can rename the set.ini files to suit your A to J button placements - just change the letter using right-click rename in Windows/Mac PC)

There's not too massive a difference between them - just fine adjustments. Look great on STD Picture Profile.

Two packs;- one pack set on AQ1, the other Q20.

NOTE: These are balanced high Quantised matrix settings disabling the need for pushing AQ to 2, 3 or 4 or lower manual Q

TECH INFO: Who needs 150M to pull off good looking pictures? You don't. Good to Hi quality Type 10 sdcards only.

NOTES: It seems a lifetime in a week trying to achieve the best possible bitrate, Q, matrix etc... settings to date. Sedna is the work of around 50+ odd hours of continuous testing with 4 GH2s working around the clock with different lenses, ISO's, shutter speeds and stopping up and down... but even that's not enough testing.

Some of these settings have also been put through their paces by @onionbrain (incredible and extensive chart work, thank you Andrew) and @thepalalias and I am deeply grateful for their reports. Per @thepalalias has also been of great help in assisting in visual testing and also for his tireless work testing audio. Therefore, I have included his latest 'Pasadena Pulse Audio V2 Beta 2' audio settings within Sedna - which I know he (and his team) have spent an age developing and getting right. I can vouch that they sound superb - bringing the best audio and recording mic setups available to date to the GH2. Well done fellas. They are to be applauded.

But a week's testing by so few of us is never enough to cover every single conceivable problem. And for that we rely on you filmmakers, documentary makers, videographers, and all to report back your findings.

Personally, I have been rather selfish - trying to achieve the best settings for my up-and-coming film project with the gh2 - fundraiser will be up soon ;-) Predominant testing has therefore taken place at 24p level. Although extensive work has also gone to achieving closeish HBR & 720p settings for users of those settings. I believe more time on these will be spent in the future.

The main objective of Sedna has been to look at ways of calming down the noise, knock down the overblown Reds whilst wrestling with the blues and without the colour space values of 4:2:2, 10bit et al, its near on impossible - we can only mess with the luminance and chrominance. Most of the testing has taken place in real world conditions - the others from my chart basics and the chart profile tests by Andrew @onionbrain. I think all of us testing so far have seen better performance than the stock matrix by Panasonic. Whether you prefer them to Orion or Dark Matter settings is up to you. After all, the human visual system means what's good for one is not the best for another. But now there's more choice.

But enough banter, soon it will be your chance to try out the new settings.

    Nick

Driftwood 'Cluster' v1 With Orion (AVC Intra adapted) Matrix VBR 'Settings' for ptools 3.64d- Released 9th March 2012 1am

    (Panasonic firmware v1.11 & ptools 3.64d '200212' required). Settings for GH2 & GF2 Lumix cameras. Stats: Upto 72M 24p, Upto 36M HBR, Upto 36M 720p modes. (*All REC MODES include B frames)

INFO: Very simple Long GOP cluster of i/p/b frames principle, Low Bitrate, conservative settings for all round use with a nice matrix for Type 6 card users. After so many requests from non GOP1'ers to provide the Orion Matrix in a Long GOP configuration I settled on this one to hopefully satisfy the need. I like 12 GOP / 15 GOP for Long GOP - as far as editing goes and converters out there, the Ibbpbbpbbpbb (12 GOP PAL) and ibbpbbpbbpbbpbb (15 GOP NTSC) is the most universally supported GOP structure outside of Intra. A nice cluster of i/p and b frames and appropriately titled methinks. Hopefully, this will keep long duration seekers, type 6 card users, and HBR peeps happy (though I doubt I can please all of 'em).

INFO: This is the same as 4c below with HBR/1080i modes GOP Related attempted Fix for clipwrap etc.... HBR mode looks better when GOP Related is 1,0,0,0,1,0 That's the only change from 4c. I can't confirm thiss is a defo fix as of yet.

Driftwood Quantum X (v4c Orion) CBR 'Settings' for ptools 3.64d- Released 23:30pm 05/03/2012

    (Panasonic firmware v1.11 & ptools 3.64d '200212' required). Settings for GH2 & GF2 Lumix cameras.

Featuring the new 'Dark Matter' matrix set (three version variations) based on current Orion Matrix with hi/lo freq adjustments. Plus 720p on 9/6 GOP. AQ is NOT required. This is a constant Q (Q8) CBR setting which performs measurably better than with AQ4 on. All other settings as before.

INFO: Orion 4c with Dark Matter matrix pack. Three adjusted matrices to try out, all scaled from perceived HVS Great Quality (v1) to middle of these (v2) and perceived HVS Highest quality (v3). HVS = Human Visual System. This is sharper than the Orion matrix of yore which is still great but many of you wanted to pull out a few extra stops. Let's see if this helps YOU. Only other changes from Orion 4b are GOP Releated, 720p is 9/6 for NTSC/PAL.

Please let me know which matrix you like.

    Q. Where do I get firmware v1.11 and ptools 3.64d?

    A. All the neccessary links are available here at top of page 1: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2317/ptool-v3.64d-topic/p1

    Q. How do I load Quantum settings & firmware v1.11 into ptools 3.64d?

    A. See below - its simple.

    1. simply make a new folder on a pc call it 'Quantum'.

    2. Depending on which camera you own do the following;-

GH2 Users: Copy Panasonics official GH2 firmware v1.11 (GH2__V11.bin) into that folder. (You can download this firmware from Panasonics offical site at http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/dl/gh2.html)

GF2 Users: Copy Panasonics official GF2 firmware v1.11 (GF2__V11.bin) into that folder. (You can download this firmware from Panasonics offical site at http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/dl/gf2.html)

    3. Download latest ptools v3.64d 200212 from the 'ptools 3.64d' thread link (https://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/ptool-software) and copy that into the folder too.

    4. Download the Quantum patches (white looking documents found at the bottom of this section) and unzip them to the Quantum folder.

    5. NOW run ptools, then load the firmware v1.11 (GH2__V11.bin for GH2 users or GF2__V11.bin for GF2 users) when it asks, now you'll see Rocket and Orion settings highlighted in Green (hover mouse over B and G buttons) click on either, whichever you wanna try.

    6. One youve selected your fav' Quantum patch then click on SAVE FIRMWARE button and save the patched firmware to your sdcard naming it higher than the original GH2__V11.bin (GF2__V11.bin for GF2) firmware (makes sense yeah!) for example 'GH2__V12.bin' (GF2__V12.bin for GF2) when asked.

    7. Load the new firmware from the sdcard to your camera by inserting sdcard, switch on camera, press the green-marked triangular 'Play' button once, Answer yes, to update your firmware. Note: Make sure youve got a fully charged battery before doing this update.

    8. Done! Film away! *Please note you WILL NOT see any cosmetic changes in the menu system of the camera - but rest assured, the Quantum settings are all loaded & working hidden, under the bonnet of the camera ;-)

HOW TO PUT IT BACK TO STOCK SETTINGS AGAIN? You can always go back to stock settings by simply UNCHECKING all the boxes in ptools (or by clicking any unused red button, A to J)and saving the edited firmware back to your sdcard and reupdating. Easy.

All basic and beginners questions about the hack can be found here http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/

  • Some fantastic videos posted. Thanks all. As always a new thread (Series 3) has had to be made due to replies reaching the 1k mark.

PLEASE DO NOT POST HERE ANYMORE, THIS THREAD IS ABOUT TO CLOSE.

The new thread will be continued at;-

    http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2616/driftwood-quantum-x-settings-series-3-vy-canis-majoris-sedna-orion-pictoris-rocket-etc...

  • My first experience with Orion 4Vb.

  • @Rafa I really liked your sky shots as well as the water fall from the plant. The thunder also sounded very good. The thunder alone has convinced me to give Sedna a try tomorrow.

off/on topic, I know it will never be read by those that keep moaning, but if you have anything less than a SANDISK class 10 card you probably shouldn't even post about card read errors with Sedna, since this is not a patch made to work with all cards. It is a patch made to optimize the potential of the camera so long as you use THE RIGHT CARD. I'm sure I am not the only one sick of seeing the threads getting clogged with these comments.

  • @driftwood are u off for a while sir? Didn't see any reply from u past 24hrs.

  • @WhiteRabbit Thanks for all the useful information, I also have to shoot in low light next week. Are you saying that ISO 1600 is the less noisy in low light? Look forward for your impressions of sedna in low light. I actually use sedna on 50p in bright light is superb!

  • shut a music video this weekend with sedna Q20 A, with a combination of AF101 and 5D. Didn't have any problems with sedna in terms of stability. Will post some stuff up later.

  • @Kihlian, thank you very kindly for the positive feedback. I do not consider the content on par with the testing going on and displayed in this thread. No noise reduction applied. Just Colorista II applied, using primary, and secondary to achieve the vignette, add a few stops of exposure to the darker shots and the general tone/look in the 3-way, and the master to play with the curve. Whilst not scientific, just a hunch, since I shoot this same area every few weeks, I felt that Quantum X v4d Orion 'Dark Matter' V3 720p50 had less noise than usual, using the driftwood patches evolving along the way. Not sure if Dark Matter is coded into 720p patch. ISO 1600 has been the sweet spot for low light, yet I must shoot aperture fully open at f/2.8 at this location. I prefer to shoot at around f/5.6, then I need to go to ISO 3200 and push further in post, and the noise is more apparent. Tempted to try Sedna on Wednesday, however, I am recording in an area where I am fighting against the dark matter. @RRRR, cool! Couldn't help but have a flash of Eraserhead cross my mind while watching. I'll have to pull out my Lomo's, awesome glass.

  • Just some birds. Straight out of cam. Orion v4b. Pany 14-140. Setings i do not remember.

  • @WhiteRabbit nice, you had to reduce noise in post?

  • @RRRR Beautiful film, wonderful.

  • B/W with Orion v4b, color shots with golgop3-13

  • Sedna A Q20, nostalgia, -2,-2,+2,-2, AWB
    Color corrected with colorista
Resolution is amazing! Dark area is very clean!

  • "very sensitive audio hack" means the settings has been optimized by Per Lichtmann to bypass the interal AGC as far as possible, the 4 levels are now much further away from each other, starting pretty low for those who use external preamps up the level 4 which is very sensitive, overall giving more range, and the indicators now give more useful visual feedback.

  • @driftwood is it possible to apply audio settings to cluster?

  • @kihlian not possible yet. I don't know how to operate video editing software yet. I just downloaded FCPX and premiere pro and I have no idea how to use either one. I am an audio guy by trade so this shouldn't be too crazy to figure out, just need to spend some time on it.

  • Quantum X v4d Orion 'Dark Matter' V3, 720p50, 1/100, Smooth -2 -2 0 -2, ISO 1600, AWB. Underexposed footage one side of the track, colour correction overload...

  • Orion rocks in 720, and that is definitely a useful thing to rock in and looks very good in 24p. HOwever, in 24p, sedna looks amazing. I have been running sedna a aq1, but I changed AQ to 2. Stable on 64 GB 95 m card and looks great. I can't tell any difference between stock aq1 a and the version with the setting i changed.

  • Where are the Dark Matter and version Orion4B patches? Also, what's the best way to know if these are working? thanks

  • Shot one this weekend with both Sedna and Orion 4b. If I could only have 1 it would have been Orion (more stable)

  • For a music vidéo my choice is: ORION 4vb

  • Hi guys. Shooting a music video in a couple of weeks. Which is the best settings to use with no strange artifacts?

    Sedna A AQ1 ORION 4vb ORION 4d with Dark Matter C

Will be using voigtlander 25mm, stock 14-42.

Thanks in advance for your help :)

  • @Vitaliy I am too of sick of all this talking its just taking the piss now

  • @driftwood
