Venezuela: outside intervention escalating the crisis
  • Juan Guaidó proclaimed himself President of Venezuela in 23JAN, Guaidó, who is basically in his first mandate as deputy, is leader of the opposition and president of National Assembly. The opposition has been attempting to use the National Assembly as a proto-government since the constitutional crisis of 2017, with the election the Constituent Assembly witch was boycotted by the opposition.

    Minutes later, USA recognized Guaidó as legitimate president of the country and moved OAS to follow. The sphere of influence of USA and the Lima Group also followed. Later the day Russia, Turkey, Bolivia and Cuba announced support to Maduro.

    USA government threatened armed intervention if Maduro "makes anything": "we have made no decision but every option is on the table". Russia announced that they would act in defense of Maduro in the case of USA intervention. EU and some other "neutral" countries position it's to search for talks and promote general elections with ONU support.

  • Well, it'll be end of Maduro. May be not exactly now, but soon.

    You can't make stable fake socialism because it is fake (you do not own means of production), and because your oil extraction dropped so much :-)

  • For some reason ALL socialism which fails is called fake socialism.

  • The general problem today is not fake socialism, but fake capitalism.

  • EspenB For some reason ALL socialism fails. No real success stories yet, in 100 years.

  • venezuela is over soon.

    gringos all over venezuela in near future.

    stupid excuses from north america all over again.

    Invation is imminent.

  • Ok guys, if you want to use something to generalize any "socialism don't work" thing, a clown getting out of some role and being pushed to be president by another clown with lots of guns and ridiculous tan surelly says a lot more about "democracy" and "liberty" than about socialism.

    Btw a revival of op condor times is not even close to a example of capitalism sucess to any american people.

    Just pointing.

  • @endotoxic dont know for sure if they want to risk a war in south america. Any direct interventions would cause some crisis and radicalization across countries. USA can enforce monroe doctrine and help Maduro exaust himself. Besides, any bad step from USA and they lose even more space to China in SA.

    Maybe there will be some MINUSTAH kind of mission in the future, leaded by Brazil.

  • @ EspenB "The general problem today is not fake socialism, but fake capitalism."

    Can you explain what 'fake capitalism' is? It looks more like extreme capitalism to me.

  • Venezuela - The U.S. Game Plan And How To Respond To It

    The game plan for the current U.S. regime-change operation against the government of Venezuela was written by Senator Marco Rubio with the support of Vice President Pence:

    The American recognition of Mr. Guaidó as Venezuela’s legitimate president is far more than a symbolic measure, and presents new complications for Mr. Maduro. The idea was avidly promoted by Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican who pushed the Trump administration to take such a step. In a speech to the Senate on Jan. 15, Mr. Rubio said that designating Mr. Guaidó as president would allow millions of dollars of Venezuelan government assets frozen in the United States to be at the disposal of opposition lawmakers, who could use them to fund new elections or humanitarian assistance.

    The real amount the U.S. and Britain have 'frozen', or practically stolen, from Venezuela amount to several billion dollars, not just a few millions. Such 'freezing' of money owned by governments the U.S. does not like has become all too common. Together with a raft of other sanctions the economic war the U.S. has long waged against the country made the recovery of the Venezuelan economy nearly impossible.

    Venezuela - U.S. Again Tries Regime Change Which Is Again Likely To Fail

    The U.S. has been intervening in oil-rich Venezuela since at least the early 2000. Several U.S. backed attempts to oust the elected socialist government, first under Chavez and then under Maduro, failed. But the economic sanctions by the U.S. and its lackeys have made the life for business and the people in Venezuela more difficult. With access to international financial markets cut off, the government did its best to work around the sanctions. It, for example, bartered gold for food from Turkey. But the Bank of England, which is custodian of some of Venezuela's gold, has now practically confiscated it.

    Venezuela’s gold in limbo amid tug-of-war at the Bank of England

    In early November news was placed into the British media (Reuters and The Times) revealing that the Bank of England in London, one of the world’s largest custodians of gold bars on behalf of other central banks, was refusing to allow the withdrawal and repatriation of 14 tonnes of gold belonging to Venezuela’s central bank, the Banco Central de Venezuela (BCV).

    According to these media reports, the delays / refusals by the Bank of England to allow the Venezuelan gold repatriation ranged from excuses about the prohibitive cost of transport insurance to concerns about future money laundering. In all cases, these excuses were bogus

    The route of USA is well planned ahead. This recent problem has only accelerated the end of Venezuela. Gringos will pollute their system even more. The collapse is imminent.

    though, all grate changes comes with grate collateral effect. I only hope that whatever intervention they make, will create a positive change on venezuelan society.

    About strategy made by USA, its mainly the final executions of a large plan to capture oil. Has been good investment since no war, was or will be used against them. And if an invasion happens, media will make it clear to the people too welcome it, to fight against the tyranny of the oppressed government. What they don't know is that they will pass from the the hot soup to the frying pann, since all where USA comes lately only brings destruction.

    they are not what they are by being nice, no????

  • US interventions don't have a great history of making positive changes in societies. :-/

  • @eatstoomuchjam

    Here they just want oil.

    We will see how it goes as it can become real long war between China and US ala Siria.

  • Twitter in the coup.

    Twitter have wiped out 1200 accounts sided with Maduro government allegating a "campaign of spammy content focused on divisive political themes". The announcement is recent but the interference is being made since at least mid 2017.

  • @caveport

    fake capitalism = crony capitalism.

    "Crony capitalism is an economy in which businesses thrive not as a result of risk, but rather as a return on money amassed through a nexus between a business class and the political class."

    " This is done using state power to crush genuine competition in handing out permits, government grants, special tax breaks, or other forms of state intervention[1][2] over resources where the state exercises monopolist control over public goods, for example, mining concessions for primary commodities or contracts for public works."

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crony_capitalism

  • @EspenB

    Crony capitalism is normal capitalism during modern stage.

    As I am quite sick of cries to return early days of capitalism and not being able to see reality.

    We must give a definition of imperialism that will include the following five of its basic features:

    1. the concentration of production and capital has developed to such a high stage that it has created monopolies which play a decisive role in economic life;
    2. the merging of bank capital with industrial capital, and the creation, on the basis of this “finance capital”, of a financial oligarchy;
    3. the export of capital as distinguished from the export of commodities acquires exceptional importance;
    4. the formation of international monopolist capitalist associations which share the world among themselves, and
    5. the territorial division of the whole world among the biggest capitalist powers is completed. Imperialism is capitalism at that stage of development at which the dominance of monopolies and finance capital is established; in which the export of capital has acquired pronounced importance; in which the division of the world among the international trusts has begun, in which the division of all territories of the globe among the biggest capitalist powers has been completed.

  • If you have oil and are smaller than the US, you are doomed.

  • @nomad

    Actually you are not, but if you want to do modern socialism with Venezuela specifics - you are close to it.

    We'll see if US will be allowed to grab this oil, as far as I understand - current Chinese trade war has lot to do with ability to help them from protection.
