Ahead of IBC 2025, which opens its doors in three days in Amsterdam, Canon has just announced a compact, full-frame cinema camera: the EOS C50. (Full review, here). The EOS C50 is the smallest camera in the Cinema EOS range, but it’s still a competent unit that can capture 7K60P RAW footage to SD or CFexpress cards, 4K120P/2K180P, and 32MP high-resolution pictures. Also, this is the first Cinema EOS camera to offer 3:2 open gate recording, capturing the full width and height of the sensor. So, let’s take a closer look at it! One year to the day, Canon released the EOS C80, which can be looked at as an “upgraded” version of the widely popular EOS C70, that featured a full-frame image sensor, triple base ISO, and a 12G-SDI output port a lot of users were asking for, to name a few. As a Canon shooter with two EOS C70s, I upgraded one of my cameras to the EOS C80. I couldn’t be happier, as it is a real workhorse and a do-it-all camera that gets the job done for nearly all shooting scenarios, whether stripped down for run-and-gun/one-man-band/wedding scenarios or fully rigged out for commercials or music videos.
