Best way to make 2,35:1 markings on display?

Hi Guys,

I was just wondering which methods some of you may have to make markings on your display (or even external monitor) for guidance for framing cinema aspect ratio?

The Guide lines sadly can not have two horizontal bars as far as i know of.. I was hoping the hack would introduce some type of marking somewhere down the line- but since that does not seem to be possible, lets hear your method :)

I use separete monitors with guides, or tape them. Another way to use the guide is to set it so you only use the top or bottom, then adjust vertically in post.

Screen protector + permanent marker (2.35:1 + rule of thirds = 6 lines)

I've used free swatches of self-stick cinegel, translucent gray. Cut 2 strips top and bottom to give 2.35:1. The best thing is you can still see through the dark parts.

There is thin tape available for marking lines on whiteboards .. commonly available in 1mm width .. In AU it can be bought from chain store 'Office Works'

I use .3 ND gel, and mark it off similar to @jleo method. To find the right aspect just do the math. Measure the actual width of the monitor, divide by 2.35 or 2.39 whatever aspect you are going to crop, then subtract the result from the actual height of the screen, divide that by 2, and make little marks that distance down form the top, and up from the bottom.

I cut off more gel than I need, and then trim it with an exacto knife after attaching, then use double stick scotch tape, and line the edges of the monitor up to the marks you made, and along the top and bottom of the monitor, and then just stick it on. But be sure to use the outside edges of the gel as your "straight line" so you get a perfect straight line, and then after attaching to your monitor, trim edge that you cut from the gel, which should NOT be the line that is now cropping your monitor.

I know this may not make sense. I may have to actually do that tutorial I promised I'd do way back.

I use the screen protector + marker method. I wish manufacturers would just add this feature to cameras. It's so useful and would require very little to implement.
