Driftwood VY Canis Majoris: This thread will now be integrated into 'Driftwood Series 6 Settings'

  • @peternap Thanks for the compliment. I think where I am located makes nearly anything I shoot look colorful. I could just about shoot black and white and still have it come out full of color ;) The fountain shots were CM day though, just in case you missed it. I think overall CM night looks fine in the day, but I did see a bit of the washed out sky at times.

  • @rajamalik I asked about the settings you posted about the same time you posted the explanation.

  • I was trying same shots, Canis pm, and with the Panasonic 14 mm 2.5, starting from an aperture of 8 I get jumpy frames and cut off sound. All in Sandisk Extreme pro card, I read something similar before in this thread but I do not think what I was shooting was as demanding. With manual lenses no problems at all.

  • @peternap setting?? obscura edited them changed canis majoris to CBR 169mbit he is trying to improve the patch for prores 422 hq . just considering post production editable formats in mind. @obscura is also working in Sedna A so that it will also improve a bit in CBR for FCPx. I don't know how much it's gonna push in post when it comes to Sedna A. But yes CM night is improved a bit exposure and gradient set from magic bullet are clear proofs.

  • Can someone post the file that obscura used canis majoris set to CBR 169mbit?

  • VY Canis Majoris test in low light (constantly changing night club lights) with moving targets (salsa dancers).

For camera settings used, please refer to the the Vimeo comment at "https://vimeo.com/42769405".

  • @rajamalik. Apparently you have already used the .ini file above. Why don't you just zip it and include the zip file instead of filling out the pages of this thread with copying the entire setting.

  • @rajamalik +1 for Zaven13's comment.

  • Here is the zipped .ini file for the CBR CMN patch by @obscura (from the text provided by @rajamalik)...

    setg.zip
    1K
  • @Zaven13 i am a bit lazy,...just copy pasted,...i received this setting same way,...not as a zip or ini,..i created the ini myself,...k anyway,..take it,..i attached my ini file here.

    sete.ini
    7K
  • @Tico thx man,..@mee nothing + here , just misunderstanding.

  • BTW... I compared the CMN_CBR patch against the new FMv2 and the former did better on the banding front. Quick torture test I do. Nothing scientific.

  • @Tico what is fmv2??? the cbr Canis Night is the same as the vbr default canis. it only grades a little better. i noticed a slight improvement in color correction and grading. not by details and in shot. it does the same.

  • What is the general experience with 32GB 45MB/s cards while using the @Driftwood Mysteron, CM and Sedna (sorry, not on topic, apologies) hacks? From what I've seen some people find it to be fine, while others are say it's a no-go. down here in South Africa, it's really hard to afford the 64GB 95MB/s cards, so I'm looking at the 32GB 45MB/s or 64GB equivalent, and even those are really expensive. I'm currently shooting on two 8GB 95MB/s, but it's so limiting - on CM Day PM I only get about 4 minutes of video! It's impressive looking video though, thanks @Driftwood.

  • @rajamalik by +1 I simply meant I agree with Zaven13. The code hurts my eyes, and makes it hard to follow the thread.

  • @rajamalik FMV2=Flow Motion Version 2

  • @mee its alright buddy,.... @peternap flow motion v2 is it comparable with CM night??

  • @MisterBink There is very noticeable performance gap between those cards and the SanDisk 64GB 95MB/s card. Only the 64GB 95MB/s has proven to span reliably past 4 minutes in a wide variety of situautions with 24H mode for many people. Keep in mind that you will have to make sure that the "recording time limit" box is unchecked in the settings to ensure that the card will span if it can.

Some of the other cards will do well if you do not need to go past 4 minutes, but all of them have a somewhat higher potential to run into troubl e with higher detail scenes in those most demanding settings. See recent my post where I talk about using less demanding settings for class 10 cards in the Quantum X thread.

  • Gobsmacked, just come back from the Brighton Festival & Fringe 2012 Awards where we just won Best Comedy for our 'Cock & Tail Inn' production! Amazing. Edinburgh Fringe and Sky TV beckons! :-)

  • @Driftwood Congratulations Nick. We are all so happy for you. :)

  • Congratulations Nick!

@rajamalik I'm not sure anything is incomparable with anything but you would have to downgrade the CM clip to seamlessly cut FM2 into it.

The jury is still out on Flow Motion 2, it just came out. It is very good but I'm not sure it exceeds Sanity 5.

  • @driftwood Congrats Nick! Do you have a "trailer" for it to check it out?

  • @driftwood congrats Nick!

  • Congratulations! When the dust has settled a bit, are low bitrate versions of VY Canis Majoris planned? Still looking for something canis-like for documentary work. Around 500mb for one minute would be great...
