  • Is this a surprise? All entry points to wide distribution whether Youtube, film festivals, book publishing or any other medium where mass distribution leads to big success, operate on a star system. One of the main reasons is that 98% of all newcomers' work is crap. The bankable people either had special access to get into the system or worked for years to get that way. Examples: George Clooney's aunt was a 50's pre-rock pop singer. That alone didn't make this very talented actor a star, but it probably bought him a short cut to a reading denied to others. Same with Mariska Hargitay a wooden performer who can only do rage, whose mother was Jayne Mansfield, the 50's actress and performance artist. In the second category, Schwarzenegger worked his way up from the bottom through body building followed by many years of appearing in really bad films. Without tremendous luck there is no easy way in. Talented performers who keep at it for years can probably achieve moderate success, but even they depend on on the taste of the audience. Youtube has now become mainstream. Many are called, but few are chosen.

At first - they operate at class interests, all other interests just follow.

Second, star status has extremely small correlation with talents. If you had been in the music industry or reading various young writers you know it.

Third, real experiments where Stephen King or Rowling made books not under their own name and without huge marketing expenses showed that people paid no interest to them (until their agents had been forced to disclose real name of author to sell even such small amount they printerd.

  • And people will ask loudly for it as means off protecting them from extremism, fascism or bad vibes. Especially the left wing and green activists.

  • @RoadsidePicnic

People do not ask for anything like this.

It is ruling class that needs protection from "extremism" and such and use all media and celebrities to put same thought into your mind. Most people around the world actually need opposite, maximum oppression of ruling class.

  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev

Sure, no ones need this crap. Just pointing that this discourse is being pushed hard and being bought very easily by persons that should be vocal against it. Just swap some words and make things not very clear but don't worry it's all about democracy or freedom, or to protect you from haters anything. And handfull of persons will even mobilize to defend the necessity of it in the name of identity, liberty or peace.

  • The sad thing is that 'indie creators' are simply being leveraged. Let's reword this story, "Google hold struggling content creators hostage and force traditional media companies with shrinking market shares into 'pay to trend' scheme, to subsidize the data industrial complex. To celebrate its profits, Google announces benevolent new algorithm so everyone can be kept alive, although slightly less happy".

  • To be able to get on YouTube trending with money?

    A fascinating “theory” indeed!

This would assume that YouTube would be taking money directly from channels, in order for them to get on to the trending tab. As far as I know, this kind of activity is not officially, or openly happening. But your post comment got me thinking, could it be possible?

They COULD make these kind of deals, I guess, but declaring these kind of deals out loud would greatly demoralize the other, smaller creators, so most likely these kind of deals would never get discussed openly.

This is classic “conspiracy theory” material, in the sense that no one is able to prove or debunk this kind of “inside deal” claim.

  • @RRRilla

Thing that video above and I am talking about is that they pay around 10x to youtube via ads share compared to mass media videos.

Trending is about stuff ruling class want you to watch. So, it is not only about money. Due to class interests Youtube is ok to get less profits, but push more shit stuff they need in your brains.
