10mm F2.8 ED Samyang lens
  • image

    Available at:

Samyang Optics company is thrilled to invite all participants of Photokina fairs held in Cologne to visit our stand no. A025 located in the hall 2.1. We will introduce a prototypical version of the Samyang 10mm 1:2.8 ED AS UMC CS lens.

Samyang 10mm 1:2.8 ED AS UMC CS is a prototype of the ultra wide-angle prime lens designed for use with cameras fitted with APS-C/DX sensors. Its extremely short focus length and rectilinear imaging system ensure extra wide angle of view amounting to 110 degrees (~107 degree for Canon version). As a result the lens is a comprehensive tool for architecture and landscape shooting. New Samyang 10mm 1:2.8 ED AS UMC CS is similar to the 35mm system lens with 15mm or 16mm focal length in the case of Canon APS-C cameras.

All details concerning the optical construction of the lens and available mounts will be published at a later date. The lens will be introduced for sale either at the end of 2012 or in the first days of 2013.

  • Does anyone know if this lens is too wide, with a speedbooster, to use with a normal mattebox and ND filters? I've not been able to find any information to this effect elsewhere yet.

  • Ok, from initial tests, the angle on the GH4 in UHD is still less wide than a 12mm on full Micro4/3 sensor.
Build is good, focus is smooth enough, hood and cap feel the most plastic.

  • It's definitely the Speedbooster. The hood is probably designed to just barely clear a 1.5x APS-C sensor's FOV, so the GH4's 1.42x effective sensor size with the Speedbooster can "see" the edges of the hood.

Probably wouldn't be all that hard to bag/tape up the lens and Dremel down the hood a bit. People do it pretty often with fisheyes (cutting the hood off of an APS-C fisheye to use it as a circular fisheye on a FF camera).

  • Yes the lens hood is clear if i use the straight adaptor

  • Yea its only in largest photo mode. I'll try a straight nikon-mft adaptor and see if it's there.

  • @kingmixer, I wonder if it is the metabones that makes the hood visible in frame...

I will be getting the MFT geared version next week. Will try to post a video or pics. Hopefully I won't see the hood! But then again, I do mostly video work so that shouldn't be a problem.

The 10mm makes up for the GH4's UHD crop.

  • Ok, I got the 10mm f2.8 Rokinon Nikon mount in recently. Hopefully, I can shed light if anyone's curious.

It's just a quick little test – I literally just pulled over into a church parking lot and rolled for a bit. I tested it for video on both Gh4 and BMPCC via metabones – regular m43 Metabones for the GH4, and BMPCC Metabones for the BMPCC. Password is: 10mil

    BMPCC:

    Gh4:

Photo: I also attached a still from the largest photo mode of Gh4. It has the lens' hood in the frame as you can see (I knew that damn built-in hood was gonna be a bitch somehow – who still makes lens hoods built-in!?).

    So… fair warning on that.

  • Has anyone found a review where they used one of these via speedbooster on a GH or Blackmagic cam? Seems that working would be too good to be true.

The majority of the frame is crisp, and that's exactly what we're looking for in a premium ultra-wide lens.

At maximum aperture, sharpness is already excellent in the centre of the frame, and good towards the edges of the frame. Stopping down improves performance across the frame, although it takes longer for the clarity towards the edges to catch up to that seen in the centre. Outstanding sharpness is achieved in the centre of the frame at f/4 and sharpness approaches excellent levels towards the edges of the frame at f/8.

  • @Vitaliy No doubt that is their concern, but I actually think they would sell a lot of MFT 10mm/2.8 lenses if they made one. There are no sub-12mm, non-fisheye primes for MFT and a lot of folks have been asking for one.

  • @AdamT

Of course, they can, but I think they have little concerns with market volume for such lenses.

  • I so wish that Samyang would design more lenses specifically for MFT. Their 7.5mm fisheye is a little gem -- emphasis on little. I'm sure they could make a 10mm for MFT that's half the size of the current offering.

Wide open it is not very sharp. In fact, we’re much more pleased by its performance when stopped down to f5.6-f8. On the Pentax K3, the lens resolves a ton of detail. Again, this makes it very specialized and perfect for the architecture and landscape shooters out there.

  • Very wide lenses are quite tricky in flange distance. The tiniest tilt can spoil your image.

  • Fair points about dumb adapters, but in reality, the image degradation is pretty much a non-issue in most cases if you use a matte box and flags (in my experience).

On the other hand: Speedboosters are technically adapters and they actually increase image sharpness. I know, I'm a speedbooster fan boy right now, but these things are seriously a game changer.

    This lens becomes:

    Regular SB @ 0.71x = 7.1mm f2

    or

    BMPCC SB @ 0.58x = 5.8mm f1.6
