What's Going on With Spike Lee's 'Highest 2 Lowest' Release?

Yesterday, the internet was abuzz about the new Spike Lee Joint, Highest 2 Lowest. It's a modern reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 High and Low, which was actually based on the novel King’s Ransom by Ed McBain.This is a movie I am very excited to see. Spike Lee is one of the greatest directors out there, and his work and voice are singular. The film hits theaters on August 15th before arriving on Apple TV+ on September 5th. But it doesn't hit a lot of theaters. In fact, in Los Angeles, where I live...it'll only be in one. What's going on here?Let's dive in. 'Highest 2 Lowest' ReleaseIn the trailer, we see Washington living the life of luxury in New York before he learns his son has been kidnapped. The kidnapper demands $17.5 million in a black Jordan backpack for his safe return. What follows looks like a dramatic and twisty retelling of the Kurosawa story. Developed and produced by Apple and A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures, this feels like it should be a movie they're using to get Academy Award nominations for Spike Lee and Denzel Washington. But the rollout is a little confusing to me. Like I said, I can only find it in theaters in New York and LA, so maybe they'll add more later, but this is such a small rollout. Especially for a movie that is currently at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and debuted at the Cannes Film Festival. This feels like a release...
