What If Spielberg Directed ‘Harry Potter’? He Almost Did

Did you know that Steven Spielberg was the first choice by Warner Bros. to direct the Harry Potter movies? Reportedly, Spielberg was even associated with the project for about six months, collaborating with screenwriter Steve Kloves to conceptualize the movie, as the negotiations went on. But eventually, he dropped out, with Chris Columbus replacing him in the director’s chair.According to the Los Angeles Times Morning Report, on February 23, 2000, Spielberg turned down Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone as the story wasn’t exactly in alignment with his directorial interests at the time. In a recent interview, Spielberg told a fellow filmmaker, S.S. Rajamouli, the RRR director, that he turned down Harry Potter also because it required him to move to another country for almost half a year, and at the time, he had decided to prioritize his family. In any case, Chris Columbus did a wonderful job at directing the first three Harry Potter movies before passing the baton to Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and, ultimately, David Yates.
