Sony FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II Lens Introduced

Alongside today’s announcement of the new Sony a6700 entry-level mirrorless camera, Sony also introduced a new telephoto zoom lens, the Sony FE 70-200MM F4 Macro G OSS II. Let’s take a closer look at its capabilities. Telephoto lenses tend to become quite heavy due to the amount of glass that’s needed to build them with a decently fast aperture. Truth be told, they are however often the “extra” lenses we bring to a shoot and are certainly used less than a standard zoom in the range of 24-70mm, for example. Also, the difference in looks between the f/2.8 and the f/4 version of telephoto lenses can be negligible while the difference in price and weight can be massive. So it makes a lot of sense for Sony to focus on releasing a new f/4 version of their 70-200mm telephoto lens for E-Mount for 35mm full-frame cameras. Focus on “Half Macro” capability Sony emphasizes that this is the first lens in the world that has “half macro” capabilities through the entire zoom range. What they mean by this is a maximum magnification of 0.5x from 70 to 200mm. Using a teleconverter (which isn’t included with this lens), the lens will project a field of view of up to 400mm and 1:1 macro magnification. Better AF tracking, new MODE3 of SteadyShot Sony says that autofocus speed has been increased by 20%, with tracking performance for moving subjects twice as good as before.
