Canon “facing unprecedented difficulties”, shuts down massive factory

Thanks to the eagle eye of YMCinema Magazine, a report by Reuters and GlobalTimes China has been brought to our attention. For a while now, Canon has decided to restructure camera and lens manufacturing. According to the latest reports however they are to completely shut their established factory of 32 years in China. The factory is not a small one. Even in the pandemic year of 2020 it produced nearly 13 million lenses and over 1 million Canon cameras. The Chinese media, such as National Business Daily (NBD) cited a screenshot of the Zhuhai unit’s termination notice on Wednesday, where 1317 employees will lose their jobs. Very interesting is the statement by Canon China public relations department representative Shen Yue in an email to the unfortunate employees at the factory. It says the company is facing unprecedented difficulties in the camera market, due to the pandemic, smartphones and chip shortages.
