10 Best Single Location Movies

One of the sneaky little subgenres I love is the idea of a single-location movie. Characters who live in a compressed space and experience their drama all in one area are extremely hard to write and also very gratifying to watch. There are lots of movies that have this conceit, but I wanted to go over ten of them that I think are really good and totally worth watching. Let's dive in. 1. 12 Angry Men (1957)This is the gold standard. I love watching the movie, but it's impossible not to think of all the parodies and rip-offs over the years. This movie has 12 jurors in a single, hot room, and it's a masterclass in escalating conflict. The location adds so much; it's stark and forces these people to concentrate on each other. And we never leave the room as these people deliberate. 2. ​Rear Window (1954)It would be hard to pick a director I admire more than Hitchcock. He knew how to use constraints to his advantage and put them in so many of his movies. In this movie, Jimmy Stewart is stuck in a wheelchair. He can’t act. He can only watch and send his girlfriend out to do his bidding. This creates a terrifying vulnerability, proving the ultimate "show, don't tell," because showing is the only thing he can do.3.
