Art vs. "Art"

  • @Nino_Ilacqua LOL That was awesome. LRT is the way to go from now on ;) I wount even buy my breakfast from a person that will not pass :D

  • I wonder what hole Shian is in? The A-(class)-hole? It is one thing to have conversation or speak out in critical fashion but this emotional rampage with no effort to provide nothing more than the mighty word of selfproclaimed ruler of the universe is a bit sad and somehow suprising aspect of mr. Shian. If a person acting and speaking such as he does here came across me in real life I would be bound to ask whether he forgot to take his medicine for severe personality disorder this morning.

And about Lynches films. Yes they can be confusing. They often are. Particulary the endings. One can still enjoy them?

  • I´d like to ask your take on why this is better art than you (or I) will ever make:

    Is it a provocation? Hardly.

  • Ahh, I see that some people are beginning to understand what's happening here, even if mistakenly including me in the equation.

I don't matter... at all.... ever... I am nothing.

Others still aren't "getting it" at all. Art is so disappointed in you. But she patiently waits for you to "get it."

Read and comprehend. Nothing is as it seems.

  • Dearest Shian, I would like to understand better how your tecinique to fire people actually works. Let's say, for example, that you have in your crew a good focus puller: does he stop do pull perfect focus if he likes Lynch?
Do you ask him if he likes Lynch and than you just tell him: "Hey, you like Lynch so you can't pull focus. You are an idiot, since you like Lynch, so you can't pull focus in my crew any more, as you could ruin the shot. You are more dangerous than a broken camera. You are fired!!!".

I am asking becouse I know two very beautiful girls who, once in a while, give me superb B.J.

I have been very much pleased so far for how they perform, but I have not yet controlled them with your LYNCH REVELATION TEST, that you kindly shared with us. What should I do if it happens that one of them - or, worse, both - don't pass the LRT? What if they say they like Lynch?

Should I "fire" them ASAP, as they could ruin the shot?

Or, since I shot raw in this occasions, I could fix "it" in post?

  • To me the most basic common purpose of art is to illicit a reaction. In Shian's case that reaction is rage and hate so I would say that in itself gives David Lynch justification to call himself an artist. Job well done sir.

As for firing someone for their opinion about a movie well... Aren't you the little jumped up tyrant?! I've worked with Cameron and compared to people like you he was a saint to work for.

  • Funny thread. Aside from Twin peaks (which eventually became more weird for weirds sake much to Lynchs disdain) David lynchs films make plenty of sense once you get to understand his film "language" and thats part of the genius. :-P

If you think he has surreal things in his films without prethought or just to make it look like art then perhaps you got lost in the highway? :-D

  • godard on critics...

  • This entire thread is art - you just don't get it.

The ones who are laughing do.

  • please post the best piece of "art" you've made to convince me why I should give a F*ck about anything your talking about ;)

ps: what's your take on Alejandro Jodorowsky?

  • I dont fire them for having an opinion about anything relevant to the work itself. I fire them for being idiots. Idiots will fuck up a shoot faster than a faulty camera. And trying to convince anyone that someone is a genius and that the person they are trying to convince is "just not seeing it" is idiotic.

Cameron didn't want to be talked to by the crew cuz there is a chain of command in place for a reason, and he's got a lot of shit to do, and doesn't need a hundred people eating up his time while the clock is ticking.

I'm not marketing myself at all... I'm creating art.

^^^^^none of this has anything to do with the answer to my question. Well, both questions:

    1) Why does my tactic work? 2) What's the best way to really get to know somebody?

The answer is the same for both questions. And it's one of the most zen and poetic things about this thread. If you've been paying close attention.

"Every magic trick...yadda, yadda, yadda... are you watching closely?"

  • this post gave me cancer;

"Now, why do I get hired 85% of the time, despite my seemingly arrogant bullshit. And what the fuck does it have to do with Art?"

Also you refering to "firing" people for having a opinion, kindergarden all over again.

that behavior reminds me of J. Cameron, who did not wanted to be talked to by the "crew"...

this business is about collaboration, with collabortions come different opinions, you banning those opinions, makes you horrible filmmaker...

you firing people is the same as, oh you're filming with a dslr, you're shit, you don't know crap about cinema or cinematography. it just does not make sense, to me.

Art is not something you might like, it's the artist whom makes something, mostly with personal meaning, and choices.

some people might think it's shit, some think it's what you refer to as "genius". it's the story behind the 'product'.

i do wonder why you get hired.. even if you have a opinion on a fellow filmmaker, keep it to yourself

your not marketing yourself as a future potential crew member for most of "us".

  • "A woman attends her mother's funeral. There she sees a dashing man across the room and she immediately falls in love with him. But before she gets to talk to him, he is gone. No one at the funeral has a clue to who he was when she asks around and she leaves the funeral without a trace of him. A week later the woman kills her sister. Why?"

This riddle is also used for spotting Replicants.

  • This is fucking golden.

  • This 'thread' seriously needs to die before it multiplies more and turns into even more pretentious waste of binary air than it already is.

  • The truth is it doesn't matter what you ask. You'll never really get to know anyone by asking them questions, you only get to see what they want you to see. You might trip them up, and get them to reveal something they don't want known, but for the most part throwing questions at someone won't tell you much. Especially if there's a chance that they might lie for whatever reason, something to hide, or if they're trying to tell you what they think you want to hear.

You have to do something else if you really want to know a person - two things really, but most often you can accomplish them in one single move. It's the exact same thing you have to do to tell a good story. It's the reason Lynch has a career. It's the reason I get hired. It's where all great Art comes from. It's so universal, and useful it's remarkable.

  • Shians dog (called Michelangelo) has the answer. When you really want to get to know somebody, step on his shoes, grab him by his nose and ask him: so you consider yourself a genius artist, ehy? Tell me, whom would you throw into the grave diggers hole, the unknown man, David Lynch or yourself?

  • While I certainly don't like Mr. Lynchs movies, either, I'd say that at least the images and soundtracks of those movies are of high quality, and that alone is much more than thousands of other pretending-to-be-artwork movies can claim.

So if I was to start a rant about overrated "art", I'd certainly start at much more extreme examples of nihilistic trash that is sold as "art" to spoilt people who cannot recognize the emporer having no clothes.

Like the junk coming from the "Factory" of Andy Warhol.

  • @oscillian I racked my brain trying to think of the answer to that riddle, exactly like you said, conspiracy and such. I ended up having to look it up for the answer.. Guess I'm not the psychopath my ex says I am.

  • This thread must be art, cause I don't get it!

  • Curiousity? They really like to get to know you well?
