  • Quite fun video from channel directly connected and sponsored by Nvidia/AMD.

    Telling that pricing can't be lower and ignoring that RTX price hike was unprecedented and unfounded... well.

  • AMD stopped a competition of their own to "guess" the Cinebench results of upcoming Zen 2 chips - and it might well be that this competition was contributing to the somewhat overly optimistic seeming rumors. I'm not inclined to believe > 5GHz 16-core Ryzens, yet, but should they materialize on the shop benches, I'll happily buy one :-)

    Present rumors are that Navi chips announcement will be at June 2019, and that they will compete with RTX 2060 and may be 2070, but not more.

    Due to high 7nm costs price will be around 10-15% lower than Nvidia counterparts, AMD is not expecting to get any significant market share with this chips, as main designation of Navi development is towards new consoles.

    Both Xbox and Playstation new consoles will be extremely underpowered and are expected to run 4K titles with low graphics at mostly 30fps.

  • Another price jump, now in AMD GPUs

    While speaking to the Chinese press, Sapphire PR manager revealed that AMD is working on two Navi SKUs: a 399 USD variant to compete against GeForce RTX 2060 and 499 USD model as an alternative to RTX 2070.

    The interview also shed some light on the new Navi architecture. According to the same manager, it will not support ray-tracing on a hardware level.

    Power consumption will be 225W for better and cheaper one will eat 180W.

    But even best seems to be only RTX 2070 competitor.

  • Navi also boasts an improved video engine. It can now accelerate VP9 decode at up to 4K90 and 8K24; H.264 decode at 1080p600 and 4K150; encode at 1080p360 and 4K90; H.265 decode at 1080p360, 4K90, and 8K24; and encode at 1080p360 and 4K60. Encoder speed-ups are reportedly as high as 40%.

    Updated DisplayPort 1.4 HDR is now capable of handling 8K displays at 60 Hz with a single cable. It can also handle 4K UHD at 240 Hz with a single cable. Support of HDR and 10-bit color is included. But only using DSC 1.2a (Display Stream Compression). The display controller also supports 30 bpp internal color-depth. The HDMI implementation remains old HDMI 2.0 without any real progress.

    On video decoders and encoders

    GPU provides hardware-acceleration for decoding VP9 video at formats of up to 4K @ 90 fps and 8K @ 24 fps. H.265 HEVC hardware-accelerated encoding of 4K at frame-rates of up to 60 fps is supported. H.265 HEVC decoding is accelerated at 8K @ 24 fps, and 4K @ 90 fps or 1080p at up to 360 fps. H.264 MPEG4 supports 4K @ 150 fps, and 1080p @ 600 fps decoding; and 4K @ 90 fps and 1080p @ 150 fps encoding.

    Progress is really small and do not see any AV1 implementation here.
