In our Canon EOS 200D review we were very impressed with how well the camera performed in a variety of different shooting scenarios. We found that the camera handled low light scenes very well, producing clear images with excellent detail. Autofocus was fast and accurate, making it easy to capture moments without any blur. The 200D also takes great videos with smooth, sharp footage and vivid colors.

In video SL2 does the job but is light on controls. It captures 1080/60p video with manual exposure controls, and Auto ISO can be used with exposure compensation. The touchscreen makes focusing ridiculously easy, and Dual Pixel AF means that it's responsive as well. The quality of its 1080p video is typical for a camera in this price range: just fine.

DSLR video has matured a lot and, especially with Dual Pixel CMOS AF in use, very high grade video quality is now the baseline of what you can expect from an EOS DSLR.
The SL2 records video in .MP4 format (IPB/IPB light) using the MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 codec. Time-lapse movies are recorded in .MOV format (ALL-I). Audio is recorded in AAC (.MP4) via dual front microphones (producing stereo sound) or the 3.5mm stereo input jack; no audio is recorded during Time-lapse Movie capture. Sound recording levels can be set to Auto, Manual or Disabled entirely. Wind Filter and Attenuator options can be set in the sound recording menu.
Several features have been added to Canon's latest SL-series model for the benefit of filmmakers, including the previously mentioned Dual Pixel CMOS sensor allowing for excellent subject tracking, a touch-screen vari-angle LCD, HDR and Time-lapse Movies.

EOS 200D is much faster and more accurate than its predecessor when focusing during Live View or movie recording, which together with the vari-angle LCD screen makes it more appealing to beginners and videographers alike.

Video quality was similar to the clips we obtained from the EOS 77D, which isn't surprising as this feature has barely changed. The slight differences between Standard and Light (IPB) settings were largely related to their different bit rates and barely perceptible. Movies shot with the Light setting were slightly slower to re-focus when panning and zooming than those recorded with the Standard setting.
Aside from that, any differences between the HD 1080p and 720p video clips were largely related to the frame resolution and negligible when clips were viewed on a normal HD TV set. Audio quality was similar to that of the EOS 77D we tested. We didn't detect any pick-up of operational noises when zooming and re-focusing while shooting movie clips.

The camera can record FullHD video at 60, 50, 30, 25 or 24fps, with stereo sound. There's also a microphone socket if you want to use an external microphone. You can use the movie mode in auto or manual modes, and there's a time-lapse movie mode as well. Video quality is good, with the camera doing a good job to focus even in low-light. Video footage will benefit from the use of a lens with optical image stabilization for the best quality, or the use of a tripod.
