The build quality is excellent: it's heavy, but reassuringly built with full weather sealing. The AF, when coupled with a decent DSLR, is fast, confident and very usable for sports. And the optical quality in my tests proved to be very respectable across the entire range. You can see some vignetting and evidence of coloured fringing, but both are easily corrected in RAW conversions, and importantly the lens delivers where it should with fine, well-resolved details right into the corners of full-frame images.

Recently Sigma seem to have hit a fine run of form, producing interesting lenses that provide good specification, for a reasonable price. This lens continues that trend, being capable of producing images with excellent sharpness, low CA and distortion. Those looking for a long lens to add to their kit bag should certainly add this lens to their list of considerations.

New firmware, version 1.02 for Canon, 1.01 for Nikon and Sigma.
OS mode 2 is optimized for panning photography, and has been improved to offer effective compensation, not only in horizontal direction, but also vertical and diagonal directions.
The Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports is tack-sharp at both the centre and edges of the frame when stopped down by one-stop at all the focal lengths, with performance only really dropping off at 600mm. Obvious vignetting at wide-open apertures is the only other real optical issue of note, and this can be easily corrected in post-production.
