I have good news on the Video side. The D500 is very good at ISO 9,000. Much better for my use than the D750 or GH4 is poor/low light. I currently have a GH4, A7s, D5300, and D500. I have had a D750, D800e, and A7sII.
I still like the GH4 in good light and use it for Travel and Hiking. You can record for over 3 hours with nothing but one SD card and single internal battery. My entire 3 lens outfit goes in my smallest bag. My lightweight carbon fiber TriPod holds it very steady.
The A7s and D500 need an external recorder and battery for extended Video. The D500 can get by with a Ninja II because the 1080P30 is as good as the A7s 4k DownRes with a 7Q+ 4k recorder although the A7s starts pulling away at 12,800 and above.
The LCD on the D500 is twice the resolution of the D750 and has a magnifier you can use to help with focus.
According to this review looks like the D500 is excellent for stills just about the same as the D750. I am tempted to purchase this because this would be a great addition to my D750/D600. My GAS syndrome is starting to kick in now ;-( but I will be patient this time and wait to see what Sony brings to the table with the Sony A9.
I am kinda disappointed on the video side in terms of the lowlight performance based on the review. On the video side it doesn't seem like an improvement over the GH4 and probably more trouble then it is worth to shoot video with. The EVF is a huge bonus for shooting video. I have an LCD viewfinder for the D750 but it is so cumbersome to use in comparison to the GH4. Mirrorless cameras are hard to beat for the convenience of a having everything in a small package with out carrying around a whole bunch of stuff.
Excellent crop sensor camera for stills.... I just wish it was a little better on the video side if it was I would probably buy it.
I have an A7s, GH4, and D500. I've had a D5300, D7100, D750, and D800.
At this point, I like the D500 best for everything except travel and hikes. I still use my GH4 for those.
I have not used the D500 outside yet, but use it for poor/low light Video where even at ISO 9,000 it beats everything else for my use
Interesting comparison to the D810. Excellent performance from a DX camera.

Matching with FS7
Affirmative. Although the D500 may be a bit better on the video side, particularly in 1080p mode. No 10bit out, but Nikon color and a bit more dynamic range.
Just to clarify, so basically the crop is very similar to the GH4 shooting @4K? Also does that mean the depth of field would be similar as well. Shooting at 2.8 on the GH4 is like shooting at 5.6 full frame in regards to depth of field? GH4 with a speedbooster seems to have the advantage over the D500 in regards to depth of field on the video side.
Besides better lowlight from the D500 the GH4 seems to be a bit better on the video side. In regards to still imaging I am pretty sure there is no contest D500 wins hands down. Regardless of the shortcomings on the video side the D500 Is a very intresting camera.
The D500 has an APS-C sensor, so I'm not sure what you mean by an FX 4K comparison. If you want to compare the 4k 1.5x crop with the DX 1080p then shoot with a 35mm DX and 24mm 4K to match FOV, and a 28mm for the 1.3x crop. Yeah 54mm on FX would closely match the FOV of a 24mm on the 4K crop. Page 70 of the manual shows the crop dimensions. 4K on the D500 is a 2.2x FX crop.
Thx squig, I'm trying to keep things even by using the exact same lens, etc. If only doing 1080p comparo then yes, it's like you said. However, what of 4K - is it merely shooting @ 24 on DX, and then @ 54 on the FX?
Haven't had time to test the video portion yet but will get to that and let you know.
Shoot with a 24mm on the DX sensor and a 35mm on the FX. Notice any aliasing/lineskipping in 1080p mode? How's the rolling shutter in 1080p mode? Noise wise it looks very close to the D750 in photo mode. Matching DOF they look about equal.
Took three short sample clips and using Media Info (video bitrate specifically and not overall) with movie settings as follows: Image area = DX, Movie quality = High
I get the following bitrates: 1080-30p = 20.9 Mbps 1080-60p = 41.2 Mbps 4K-30p (3840 x 2160) = 125 Mbps (there is a 1.5x crop applied on top of the normal vid crop in this mode)
EDIT: I'd like to do a Low-light HighISO vid comparison but not sure what is proper way to downsize the vids between FX & DX. I use Vegas Pro as NLE, do I simply rescale within the editor or is there a specific process to make sure the vid resolutions are meaningfully comparable? Appreciate any tips on this.
Thx!, Tim
