  • April 13, 2016 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced firmware updates to several products being showcased at NAB 2016. These firmware updates support a number of feature updates for users including improvement of workflow, ease of use, focusing and lens corrections, color space, and creative flexibility for products in the Cinema EOS, HD Video, and 4K Reference Display lines.

    Firmware updates are as follows:

    • The EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera updates will allow various functions such as shooting in new Canon Log3, viewfinder magnification during recording, focus guide with EF Cinema Prime lenses, Push Auto Iris and Zoom function on the grip joystick with New COMPACT-SERVO and CINE-SERVO series lenses, Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF) with COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm and CINE-SERVO 17-120mm lenses, ACES 1.0 output, peripheral illumination correction updates and overall image improvements such as noise level reduction in low-light for Canon Log2.
    • The EOS C100 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera update will allow various functions such as Push Auto Iris and Zoom function on the grip joystick with the new COMPACT-SERVO and CINE-SERVO series lenses, Canon DAF with COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm and CINE-SERVO 17-120mm lenses, and peripheral illumination correction updates and selectable disabling of the microphone.
    • The DP-V2410 4K Reference Display firmware will be updated to support ARRI Log C and ARRI metadata; improve display contrast and dynamic range; add support for Canon Log3 and Hybrid Log Gamma; and display of SMPTE 2084 input signal on the waveform monitor.
    • The DP-V3010 4K Reference Display firmware will be updated to improve display contrast and dynamic range; add support for Canon Log3 and Hybrid Log Gamma; and display of SMPTE 2084 input signal on the waveform monitor.
    • The CINE-SERVO 17-120mm Lens will be updated to be compatible with Canon's DAF function in the EOS C300 Mark II and EOS C100 Mark II Cameras.
    • The update for the ME20F-SH Camera will include lens support for an additional 19 EF and CINE lenses allowing for more creative choices in a wider variety of shooting applications including television and film production.
    • The XA35 and XA30 Professional Camcorders and VIXIA HF G40 Camcorder updates include a new file format making it easier to integrate into third party software systems that are used for athletic coaching applications.
    • The firmware updates for the XF305 and XF300 Professional Camcorders include new shooting modes allowing for greater creative flexibility, Wide DR Gamma (600 percent) Mode, Highlight Priority Mode, and Signal/Noise priority mode.
    • The XC10 4K Camcorder firmware will be updated to include a new file format MP4 in HD mode (35 Mbps only), improved AF speed, and shutter speed options for flicker reduction.

  • April 13, 2016 — The way consumers access and view content has undergone sweeping changes. Media and entertainment companies, along with creative professionals, are under increasing pressure to find new ways to create, deliver and monetize content. They must also adapt to rapidly evolving technology advancements, including high resolution capture, new delivery formats and virtual reality to name a few. Also, enterprises are dealing with an explosion of content demands from constituencies and need to integrate high-impact content types, like video, into their communications strategies.

    Ahead of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show next week, Adobe (Nasdaq:ADBE) has revealed new features across its Creative Cloud tools for video editing, motion graphics, audio and collaboration. Media and entertainment companies are combining these advanced content creation capabilities with Adobe Primetime to help deliver TV and video content across screens. With Adobe’s digital marketing tools TV networks and pay-TV providers can drive viewer acquisition, engagement and monetization as audiences embrace “over the top” (OTT) content via connected devices such as Apple TV, Sony PlayStation, Roku and Microsoft Xbox. At NAB, Adobe will demonstrate the updated tools and new workflows at booth #SL3910, South Hall (lower) in the Las Vegas Convention Center and at over 120 partner booths from April 18-21.

    Adobe Creative Cloud video tools are becoming the go-to source for film editors of both award-winning Hollywood and indie films. The most recent example is Deadpool, the 20th Century FOX blockbuster which shattered box office records. The post-production team from Deadpool will discuss their state-of-the-art workflows and why they chose Adobe Premiere Pro CC in a Creative Master Series panel at NAB on April 19 from 4:15–5 p.m. PT.

    Upcoming productions using Premiere Pro CC include Mindhunter, David Fincher’s new series for Netflix, and 6 Below directed by Scott Waugh and starring Josh Hartnett, which is currently shooting in 6K RED and will be edited natively in Premiere Pro.

    Creative Cloud video tools are also powering a new generation of content delivered via social channels like YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

    "The videos we make at RocketJump are pure entertainment,” said Freddie Wong, Founder of RocketJump, the hybrid studio/production company behind the popular RocketJump YouTube channel with nearly 8 million subscribers and 1.3 billion views. “We've been users of Adobe's Creative Cloud for years and love the new features coming soon. In addition to editing native footage in Premiere Pro and creating awesome visual effects in After Effects, we use Photoshop for graphics, Audition to sweeten audio, Media Encoder to export content, and now Creative Cloud Libraries to share assets.”

    Adobe continues to deliver technology that opens unimagined creative opportunities for video and film production, and now, immersive experiences. In the next release of Creative Cloud –- available in early summer -- Premiere Pro CC will add new virtual reality capabilities, including “field of view” mode for spherical stitched media. In addition, thanks to Adobe Stock integration into CC apps, customers are already experiencing productivity increases of 10 times, when adding stock content into creative projects, including video*. In the upcoming release, Adobe Stock will have enhanced connections with CC apps and new workflows will enable Adobe Bridge and Lightroom users to contribute to the Adobe Stock marketplace directly from within the application.

    Other feature highlights coming soon to Creative Cloud include:

    • Edit immediately during ingest allows Premiere Pro CC users to get straight to work, while importing their video and audio files in the background.
    • Powerful proxy workflows in Premiere Pro CC and Adobe Media Encoder CC enable users to easily work with heavy 8K, HDR and HFR media, so editors can switch between native and proxy formats freely – even on lightweight machines.
    • Enhanced Lumetri™ Color tools within Premiere Pro CC adds HSL Secondaries to expand the editor’s toolkit for making color correction and adjustment easier for all filmmakers.
    • New video and audio preview engine in After Effects CC delivers superior playback of cached frames for a smooth experience.
    • Easier and more efficient Character Animator includes a simplified puppet creation process that enables users to easily tag puppet layers easily and record multiple takes of a character’s movement. Users can animate puppets to respond to motion and trigger animation accordingly.
    • New Essential Sound panel in Audition CC enables anyone to mix audio content with professional results.
    • Quickly find Adobe Stock assets with new filtered search in Creative Cloud Libraries. Licensed assets in your library are now badged for easy identification, videos are displayed with duration and format information, and saved videos are linked to video previews on the Adobe Stock site.

    Las Vegas (NAB Show, Booth C11001), April 17, 2016: At NAB 2016, Sony is showcasing new technologies and workflows for HD, 4K, high dynamic range, storage and IP, providing the tools to drive professionals’ creativity. Sony’s exhibit will feature new models and updates to widely used products — camcorders, cameras, monitors, switchers, storage/archiving, and wireless transmission for broadcast, production, sports, live events and more.

    At NAB, Sony will highlight its comprehensive and growing line of cameras, with 4K available at every level from full-frame interchangeable lens cameras and compact professional camcorders to high frame rate, high dynamic range studio and motion picture cameras.

    Cameras and camcorders

    Sony cameras are used in every production genre at every budget level: feature films, news, documentary, episodic television, sports, commercials, OTT and more.

    Sony’s new HDC-4800 camera system combines 4K resolution with enhanced high frame rate capabilities — 8x at 4K, and up to 16x in full HD. This power is combined with HD cut-out and zoom capabilities for sports and live event production. The new HDC-4800 is complemented by the BPU-4800 combination baseband processor unit/replay server creating a fully networked, 4K live ultra-high speed production workflow.

    The HDC-4800 uses a new Super 35mm 4K CMOS sensor and wide color space (BT.2020 and BT.709). It supports PL mount lenses to capture high resolution, crisp images for live sports shooting. HDR support is under development and will be available in the near future.

    Sony also delivers 4K through its XDCAM family. The newest addition to the XDCAM shoulder-mount camcorder lineup, PXW-Z450, captures 4K (3840 x 2160) picture quality from a new 2/3-type Exmor R™ CMOS sensor, with exceptional weight balance and low power consumption alongside networking features. Another addition is the PXW-Z150 with 1.0-type sensor that delivers low-light performance and networking features for fast turn-around workflows.

    High Dynamic Range

    At NAB 2015, Sony introduced its first 4K OLED reference monitor for critical viewing – the BVM-X300. Already, it’s become the de facto reference standard for 4K and HDR grading.

    This year, Sony adds a new monitor – the PVM-X550, a 55-inch, OLED panel with 12-bit signal processing, perfect for client viewing. The TRIMASTER EL™ PVM-X550 supports HDR through various Electro-Optical Transfer Functions (EOTF), such as S-Log3, SMPTE ST.2084 and Hybrid Log-Gamma, covering applications for both cinematography and broadcast. The PVM-X550 is a quad-view OLED monitor, which allows customized individual display settings across four distinct views in HD. It is equipped with the same signal-processing engine as the BVM-X300, providing a 12-bit output signal for picture accuracy and consistency. It also supports industry standard color spaces including the wider ITU-R BT.2020 for Ultra High Definition.

    Technology Upgrades

    Sony is helping customers extend the life of their current Sony technologies by continually introducing new upgrades, enabling new features and performance. These include:

    • BVM-X300 — update for support of both Hybrid Log-Gamma formats, safe and aspect markers, XYZ color modulation and 1.5G dual link inputs.
    • F55 – version 8 adds support for XAVC 4K class 480, for professionals that need higher quality picture performance
    • FS7 — adds center crop functionality, a feature traditionally found on higher-end models like the F55, flexible spot focus and true 24P.
    • FS5 — adding RAW external recording and auto variable ND filters, among several other features Rounding out the total workflow for professionals, Sony’s NAB 2016 exhibit also highlights new wireless microphone systems with enhanced diversity features, solutions for media asset management, and more, across its entire product line. These include:

    New UWP-D Wireless Microphone System – Sony’s URX-P03D is the first 2-channel portable receiver in its UWP-D series, eliminating the need to attach two receivers on a camcorder, especially smaller models, making them unbalanced and unwieldy. The URX-P03D receiver supports an external input for an additional wired microphone, such as Sony’s BMP type lavalier microphones or conventional plug-in-power supported microphones. 3-channel mixer functionality is included for blending audio signals in the receiver. A new 2-channel version of Sony’s Multi Interface (MI) shoe adaptor – model SMAD-P3D is available for the URX-P03D.

    AtomOS7.1 for Flame Series adds PQ in/out and HDR Waveform

    Within a month of launching the world’s first HDR monitor-recorders, Atomos announces new features for the Flame series, broadening the HDR usage & improving the ease of use when exposing for HDR – all of these improvements are the result of real world user feedback.

    HDR is the talk of the industry, be it content developers like Amazon or Netflix, camera brands outputting HDR log or end users experiencing the high brightness range of HDR for the first time. Atomos once again is at the crossroads of technology, fast tracking HDR technology and making it easy to use in the field with the introduction of the Flame series last month and a further 6 models at NAB 2016. In 4 short weeks since the Flame launch, Atomos announce AtomOS7.1 for Flame users which adds 2 crucial features that not only expands the use cases where HDR can be used but also vastly improving the ease of use in the field for setting correct exposure for HDR.

    The first feature is the addition of PQ (also known as SMPTE ST-2084) input and output, adding HDR functionality beyond on-board monitoring. PQ input lets you connect from your editing package for HDR grading using the Atomos product, while PQ output lets users connect HDR compatible TV’s and monitors to review HDR on set.

    The second feature is the addition of new Waveform guidelines specifically designed to make exposing in HDR easier. Users will be able to toggle between a “display line” on the entire log signal’s luma parade showing how much dynamic range is currently being monitored verses being clipped. Alternatively stretch mode shows the dynamic range monitored as the entire waveform, removing the clipped dynamic range from view. The impact of this is that users will be able to judge exposure for HDR perfectly using the Waveform scope. Its simply a matter of sliding the SDR to HDR slider on the user interface until there is no more clipping as measured by the Waveform.

  • Video Devices will preview a new recording capability for the popular PIX-E Series of 4K-compatible recording monitors at the 2016 NAB Show – Booth C6040. The PIX-E Series will showcase two new features—the addition of the H.264 codec and the capability of simultaneously recording a high-quality, edit-ready Apple® ProRes file and a much smaller size H.264 MP4 file.

    These new features will be available to PIX-E owners at no cost in a future firmware update.

    Universally supported for viewing on PCs, Macs, and browsers, the H.264 codec offers a good balance between compression and quality to reach low data rates and small file sizes. As a result, it is commonly used for web streaming and long duration recording. The codec also makes for faster file uploads and easier emailing of recorded files.

    While the PIX-E Series has always featured the full-range of ProRes codecs—from proxy up to 4444 XQ—with these upcoming features, end users will be able to simultaneously record an H.264 MP4 file and a ProRes MOV file. While recording 4K in ProRes, the PIX-E will automatically scale the 4K to 1080p for recording H.264, thereby reducing its file size even further. Both recordings will also include audio—up to eight channels with ProRes and two channels with H.264.

    LAS VEGAS, NV (April 18, 2016) – Panasonic today announced a new UX series of professional 4K camcorders, successor to the company’s AVCCAM series of professional AVCHD camcorders. Two models are currently under development and scheduled for release in the fall of 2016: the UX Premium Model AG-UX180, with a 1-inch (effective size) MOS sensor, optical 20x zoom and UHD 60p recording capability; and the UX Standard Model AG-UX90, featuring a 1-inch (effective size) MOS sensor, optical 15x zoom and UHD 30p recording. “With an increasing demand for 4K video content, Panasonic is introducing the UX series to make 4K acquisition even more accessible to video professionals,” said Steven Cooperman, Senior Product Manager, Panasonic System Communication Company of North America. “UX camcorders will provide high-mobility shooting and workflow equivalent to our existing professional integrated-lens handhelds.” The UX series will support recording up to 4K (4096x2160, 24p only) and UHD (3840x2160). (The AVCCAM series allowed recording up to FHD/1920x1080.) UX camcorders will use the SD Memory Card1 as recording media. The UX Premium Model AG-UX180 supports, in addition to 4K and UHD, dual codec recording (UHD2/FHD), IR recording in low light, and 3G SDI/HDMI2.0 output. The UX camcorders’ 1-inch (effective size) MOS sensor ensures sensitivity equivalent to that of conventional handheld cameras. Variable frame rate (VFR) recording functionality (2-60 fps) is planned in FHD mode. The suggested list price (SLP) of the AG-UX180 is expected to be under $4,000.00, and the SLP of the AG-UX90 under $3,000.00. The availability of these new UX models later this year will bring the company’s line-up of professional 4K cameras to six, including the flagship VariCam 35 and VariCam LT cinema cameras for HDR production in 4K resolution, the AG-DVX200 4K, 4/3” large-sensor camcorder and AK-UC3000 4K camera system.

    This is sort of a ... make it actually work? ... year from the feel here. There's been all sorts of hype & hullabaloo the last couple years on HDR, 4600K (joking), "fast" data transfer, all that ... but it wasn't really all ... functionable. All sorts of gear with hot new specs ... but things didn't actually play well together without TONS of futzing around.

    This year, the tools have been I'd guess more refined than re-imagined ... and the emphasis seems to be on how to use what's out there to actually DO real-time HDR, 4k-+ editing AND delivery/stream & etc, real-time VR production at realistic cost & labor needs.

    This is a very much more "practical results" NAB. Actually far more useful, as this time ... they're showing how to actually like, really and realistically DO what the gear supposedly had the specs for last year.

  • Neil, you're 100% right. Very utilitarian show: real world data storage, management, transcoding, etc. Not a lot of gear at all. But like you, I keep finding a lot more practical solutions. Some really good stuff being pitched.
