Here's the official product page if it haven't been posted already. http://www.atomos.com/shogun/
It's also up on B&H's site for $1,995 although no firm release date yet. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1046387-REG/atomos_atomshogun_shogun_7_4k_hdmi.html
I would definitely love to own one of these.
Anyway, I might as well post my own video of a rep talking about it. With so many other interview videos online, this might surely be a very popular product when released. It's only main competition is the Odyssey 7Q.
@Joshua - thanks for the correction, my bad
@Joshua_Cadmium Thanks for the info, that's an ideal compromise between file size and quality.
ProRes comes in all types in 4K: http://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Apple_ProRes_White_Paper_December_2013.pdf . For file size alone, I'd consider using 422 LT on the GH4 - at 24p its only 328 Mb/s
@mrbill - thanks for the info. Hopefully they get some 4:2:2 option sorted out. I'm hoping the DNxHD is more flexible, I couldn't care less about pro res anyway.
@arknox https://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/professionalformatsandworkflows/index.html#chapter=10%26section=2%26tasks=true
The only 4k flavour pro res supports is 4:4:4:4: Hence the massive file sizes. I suspect the raid will be a raid 0 simply to speed up drive performance. These file sizes are why we must hope for a 4k 4:2:2: 10bit variety of the pro res codec ASAP
I wonder if the two-drive caddy uses RAID1 or RAID0? Meaning, is it 2.5hrs of 4K ProRes per 1TB, or 2TB?
@arknox Those types of numbers are referring to Cinema DNG 4k. The BMCC 2.5k raw images are 5MB per frame. With 4k being about 2.3x larger, it would be 11.5MB per frame. 11.5x24fps = 276MB per second. 276*60 seconds = 16GB per minute. 16GBx30 minutes = 485GB...definitely a very large workflow. However, they say that the Cinema DNG is compressed, but not sure how much yet.
400GB per 1/2 hour is unreasonably large. The BMCC is bad enough to deal with, this is insane. Does anyone know why the file size is so large. Are they encoding 4:4:4 or something. The Atomos site says it's 4:2:2, just these file sizes do not compute... Will DNxHD be just as large?
Hope they add cinema 4k recording for the gh4.
Here's the problem. The current 4k prores codec is 4444 I believe, and produces massive file sizes. What I'd like is a 10bit 422 4k flavour, but apparently that's not appearing anytime soon. I think with hindsight we'll end up seeing the relatively small footprint of 4k recorded internally on the GH4 as a blessing - and they've still left the 10bit 422 door open whenever someone comes up with a codec that makes sense.
Wouldn't an IPB codec strike a better balance on file size? That's nuts.
Gawd. 2tb for 2.5hrs of 4k pro res!
Looks good and shows the way the industry is going.
I saw the photo. It is nothing super special, I think.
If you want you can make separate topic for it, or use NAB topic.
wooden camera makes it
Its a recorder, and not black magic dedicated. Looks like you can also record 1080 in pro-res, and dnxhd is also available, plus cinema dng
Forgot to mention: it is for BMPC4k
You'll need to make new topic in this case :-)
