    Specs

    • 16MP BSI CMOS image sensor
    • 24x zoom
    • Video - Full HD 1080/60i, 120fps in 720p
    • 3" Touch Screendisplay

    • 5-Axis Video Stabilization (Hybrid Multi-Motion Movie IS)
    • 3-Axis Image Stabilization

Olympus's new Image Stabilization system was developed from the system that can be found on the E-M5. This allows the camera to compensate for movement in 5 directions while recording video and 3 directions with still images; the first of its kind in a compact camera. This allows for blur-free images while shooting on the go throughout the entire 24x optical zoom range. Smooth video can even be captured on the move, whether walking or riding on something, the camera can make the compensations.

With that, this camera features some amazing video quality and the most advanced IS system to date (August 2013) for a compact camera. This IS system, taken from an Olympus video camera, allows the HS-50 to be used on the go with fantastic results. From handheld to walking to riding on something, the camera will be able to capture smooth and shake-free video. Capturing the audio for your home movies is a small, built-in stereo microphone. While this is a very sensitive mic, it picks up the sounds that are closest to the camera. This is fine if you stay close to your subject, but the farther they get the more noise you will hear and less of what you want. You will also want to stay away from anything that makes noise, including the wind, which may not seem like much while your recording but you will notice them while viewing your movies.

Our outdoor image samples show the camera's ability to capture an overall excellent image with great exposure and colors. Our sample images were all taken in Superior Auto shooting mode, allowing the camera to produce its best possible images.

Shooting with the full telephoto zoom outdoors is excellent, as we were easily able to capture sharp, handheld images at the full 20x optical telephoto zoom thanks to Sony's SteadyShot image stabilization. This 20x optical zoom gives you a fantastic range of 25-500mm (35mm equivalent), that allows you to shoot any type of image in any situation.

Recording home movies is possible in any of the camera's shooting modes thanks to the dedicated video recording button on the back of the camera. One press of this button starts the camera recording HD video. The movie mode allows more features and control over the settings, but the movie quality is the same. While recording a movie, the camera is still ready to capture still images. Without interruption, the camera can capture 16:9 format still images at either 3M or 13M. Also available while recording is the full 20x optical zoom lens. As you can see in our sample movie, the camera does an excellent job keeping your subject in focus, even while zooming.

  • Mid-range tones and hilights look great. They're sharp, clean and well exposed. Then we look at the low key areas such as shadows and dark materials in the pictures. Our test shots show blotches of red and blue noise showing through at ISO 100. That's not good by all accounts. Move through to ISO 200 and the colour issues get worse in terms of volume, but not intensity.

    image

ISO 400, the blue and red seems to drop off, arguably combated by noise reduction software. However, if NR was at work, it would have done a better job so we wonder what it's been doing all this time. Image detail has started to degrade and sharp edges are starting to get broken down.

    image

ISO 800 and the green drops off with just blue showing this time. Details are getting smudged about in a bid to remove salt and pepper noise. Primary colours are desaturated to try and cap the colour coming through. At ISO 1600 sharp edges are soft and squidgy while primary colours are barely there. Green noise is back which is just really odd.

The new CMOS sensor brings it into line with the other models in the SX range and brings improvements in image quality and a raft of other benefits including 1080p24 HD video and faster continuous shooting. Battery life has also been improved with the introduction of an Eco mode and there's built-in Wifi with the option to tag images with GPS data from your smartphone. All of these enhancements pretty much guarantee its continued well deserved popularity

Sony HX300's strengths far outweigh its limitations, making this all-in-one superzoom a solid option for anyone who wants a camera to do a little bit of everything. The HX300's 50x optical zoom lens is a huge upgrade and an incredible tool, offering 24-1,200mm equivalent coverage. It's extremely versatile, allowing users to photograph a wide range of subjects, from close-ups of people riding a faraway zip-line to wide-angle shots of cityscapes. The HX300 handled these photo tasks smoothly and efficiently.
