SD Formatter vs In-Camera Formatting

Is formatting your SD cards in SD Formatter important, or are we just fine formatting in-camera? I use Sandisk 64 GB 95 Mbps with my GH2 and have recently started seeing a lost.dir folder appear. Not sure if this has to do with formatting or not.
So is SD formatter needed and if so which version/where to download?
