Cages for GH4?

  • but I just saw a Varavon knockoff posted on Amazon for sale.

Kind of lame knockoff with many things got wrong. Problem with cheap cages is that they only look cool. Usually they try to save on everything, make it from small flat parts (like here), use cheapest alu, use cheapest anodizing.

  • Not sure when this was made available, but I just saw a Varavon knockoff posted on Amazon for sale. Anyone try these yet? http://www.amazon.com/Latest-Camera-Handle-Panasonic-Lumix/dp/B00MG7PDAW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409813216&sr=8-1&keywords=gh4+cage

There a video posted on a non-English site showing the unboxing, assembly, and camera mounting. http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/9xqEJeLWlxM/

IMHO there are 2 major design flaws: 1) The placement of the receiving holes to allow you to mount your QR plate to the cage doesn't appear to allow clearance for the battery door to open once you have the plate attached! 2) The carry handle looks like it will hit you forehead when attempting to use the LVF!

Any takers? I'm tempted... Just work around the flaws?

  • @fosterchen - my version of the cage fits much more closely. Surprised they describe that as being a gh4 fit.

  • Just got the cage, and it is way bigger than the GH4. Battery cutout does line up though. Also, it DOES NOT have M5 holes anywhere! (1/4" and 3/8")

Just measured it, and you can definitely fit a BMCC in here, just don't know if it will block the side I/O and SSD.
Can fit cameras with dimensions of 8.25" x 5.5" and smaller.
It is still very well made...just not specifically for the GH4.

Anybody interested in buying it off me, let me know. $99 includes US shipping.

    Just found it here: http://www.ginirigstore.com/cage/all-dslr-cage.html

The cage is listed here, front page of the website.

  • @adamquesada, it was off of their Ebay listing.

  • @fosterchen it is not listed on the abcrigs site. Can you provide a link?

  • It seems there are 2 versions of the GINI ABC cage. I bought the one with beveled corners.
Only reason I went with GINI is because I have a bunch of parts from their old GH2 cage that I'm hoping will work with this cage, like the 15mm rod clamp that mounts on top. They have M5 holes as opposed to the 1/4" holes on Honu cage, which is what all their clamp screws are.

  • Here is a new and interesting cage from ViewFactors http://www.viewfactor.net/new-releases/contineo-gh4-cage.html

  • In the absence of me getting a picture up, search eBay for ABC super cage if you're interested in an image of the gini cage. Its a reasonably snug fit - less of a gap around the camera than the fhugen

  • The coollcd clamp is so much more solid than the fhugen clamp (which is still pretty good) that I'll be using the gini\abc rigs cage from now on. I plan on getting a gh3 as a bcam at some point so there'll still be a use for the fhugen.

  • Here is a review of the Honu cage from Caleb Pike

  • Phew!l

  • @mrbill - hahaha i just meant your hand around the camera :)

  • I like the Honu/Fhugen, it seems solid and fairly well-made, and the price was good, but I hate the gaps on the sides between the camera and vertical pieces. I plan on bringing them in about 12mm on each side so they hug the camera body. File the edges of the right side a bit so it flows more into the camera's grip shape, and move the left side forward a bit to allow the screen to rotate more flat. Someone posted a CoolLCD clamp that looks a lot better than the Honu version so I'll probably go with that instead.

I really don't think they put as much thought into the design as they should have. I was thinking the 2.0 would have addressed a few more things, but nope, just made a couple tiny changes so the A7 fits.

I'd really love to see an LCD loupe/viewfinder like Varavon's tilting GH3 version, but that mounts to the left side of a compatible cage, instead of to its own bottom baseplate. And some ultra-low profile right-angle cables that allow the LCD to tilt, please!

  • I love my Fhugen Honu cage, but I got the version 1.0 that was $100. Now they've modified it to fit the Sony A7 and raised the price to $150. Still, a great deal on a very well built piece of gear, but at $100 it was a no brainer. Solid materials and craftmanship and integrates perfectly with the GH4.

  • Yea, wear something cute, too.

  • With me in it?

  • @mrbill, don't suppose you could upload a picture with your camera in it and you holding it?

I bought one of these too, and the build quality is stunning - it's basically a GiniRigs cage. I've fitted a CoolLcd hdmi clamp to it, which works great

  • still browsing for something and I cam across the Varavon ARMOR UNI - I don't think that they make it any more but it looks like it would do the job for me.

I need something to protect the lest side with HDMI, Mike and Cams but I want the right side free to hold the grip and operate the camera. doens't seem to be much out there yet.

  • @airboxlights I have the P&C Gearbox and with the supplied spacers there should be just enough space for the GH4 and YAGH. http://www.photographyandcinema.com/collections/camera-cage/products/gearbox-video-camera-accessory-cage

  • I do like the concept of a rig I can adapt & expand to suit different cameras & configurations though

  • @tired

This is Indians. Such thing is long time on the market. their problem is usually manufacturing and materials used. All of their things I had broke.
