    @producer, you can gain perhaps 1/3-2/3 of a stop with low con filters and get some other issues (flaring f.i.) in the process.

    Tiffen Ultracon filters can give you a little extra usable DR on the low end by lifting the shadows.

    Where possible, flagging off/diffusing your brightest lights and/or adding some bounced fill to your shadows is really the way to go. You can't always expect the camera to do everything.
