His movies are personal, stylistic, and engaging. They change time periods, characters, and cover the gamut of comedy, drama, violence, and peace. In a new interview with Variety ahead of his new film, Licorice Pizza, the director covers the movies he's watching, life, and his inability to talk about his new project. When it comes to being called an auteur, he says, "I’m very nervous about describing myself with a French word that essentially means psychotic control freak. But in English, I take that compliment, and it’s true that I have a single-minded dedication to what’s in front of me and each film that I make.
