Sony RX1R III Announced – Compact Full-Frame Flagship With 61MP Sensor and AI Autofocus

Sony has officially unveiled the RX1R III, the long-awaited third-generation model in its RX1R premium compact camera line. Designed for professionals and enthusiasts seeking uncompromising full-frame image quality in a highly portable form factor, the RX1R III builds on its predecessors by integrating the latest advancements from Sony’s imaging ecosystem. When Sony released the RX1R II nearly a decade ago (yes, you read that right!), it made waves with its compact form factor, full-frame sensor, and fixed ZEISS 35mm F2 lens. At the time, we noted that it offered a rare combination of image quality and portability. However, it also had its limitations, particularly in autofocus performance and modern usability features. A leap forward from the RX1R II With the RX1R III, Sony appears to have addressed many of those points. Most notably, autofocus has seen a generational leap with the addition of AI-powered subject recognition, and the new 61MP sensor delivers even more resolution than before. 61MP full-frame sensor meets ZEISS glass At the heart of the RX1R III is a 61-megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor paired with the company’s latest BIONZ XR image processor. The sensor omits the optical low-pass filter and features an anti-reflective coating to maximize resolution, contrast, and dynamic range. This is the same sensor resolution found in Sony’s Alpha 7R V, now in a palm-sized body.
