Poll: What Makes a Camera a Cinema Camera?

In this week’s poll, we’re very curious to hear your opinion: what makes a camera a “Cinema Camera”? We’ve noticed some manufacturers use the term rather loosely, mostly for marketing purposes. Controversial? Absolutely. Our Nikon ZR review wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, mostly because I openly questioned whether this camera truly deserves the label “Cinema Camera,” echoing Nikon’s own marketing. Make no mistake: Nikon is not the only company using terms “Cinema” or “Cinematic” in their publications. Sony, for example, even has an entire line of compact FX cameras called the “Cinema-Line”. What made me uncomfortable in this case was how extensively Nikon’s marketing team used the term “Cinema” (or “Cinematic”), more than I’ve seen with competing manufacturers. As one reader wrote to me: “Johnnie, why do you care about how Nikon describes their camera? Use and enjoy it if you can”. While those are wise words, I do care when marketing departments go overboard. That’s why, for the sake of open conversation, I am genuinely curious to find out what you guys think makes a camera a “Cinema Camera”. Since there are so many features that can define a Cinema Camera, we’re allowing multiple answers here (five to be exact) so we can get a wider picture and better understanding of this topic.
