Poll: How Often Do You Purchase a New Camera?

Gear-heads like ourselves tend to look at new gear and cameras in particular in a very “interesting way”. We love innovation, and news of new cameras always puts us in a certain “mood”. Most probably it will be either “I want it” or “Is it better in any way from what I have now?” (and if yes, I probably want it)… But yesterday I watched a full-length three-part documentary that went on air on Netflix recently. Regardless of whether you like the music of Take That (a famous British boy band), I really urge you to watch it, even for the sake of seeing how a documentary from archival material that was shot over the last thirty-five years was made. And how is this connected to our current poll? Well, very simply (at least in my mind). It proved to me again that the quality of recording is playing a second or third violin when wanting to tell a story. In this particular documentary (and many that have been done before), it is the storytelling that comes first, and in this particular case, the lower quality even adds authenticity, but this is a different story altogether. Now, lots of the footage in this film was taken over the years with an ancient 8mm and VHS-C camcorders, something that we most probably won’t even dare to use today although a full-frame sensor camera in this particular handycam shape could have been an extremely interesting exercise to manufacture.
