John Carpenter Might Be Working on a 'Thing' Sequel

During a recent appearance at Fan Expo Philadelphia, John Carpenter hinted that a sequel to his 1982 horror classic The Thing could be in development. When asked about the possibility during a Q&A session, Carpenter said, "We're working on it now," then immediately tempered expectations by adding, "I don't know. We'll see" (via World of Reel). Carpenter hasn't directed a feature since 2010's The Ward, but this isn't the first time he's hinted at a Thing project being in development. At Texas Frightmare Weekend in 2023, he said he'd been "sworn to secrecy" about a possible Thing 2 (via MovieWeb).The original film famously bombed at the box office. Roger Ebert wrote upon its release, "The Thing is a great barf-bag movie, all right, but is it any good? I found it disappointing, for two reasons: the superficial characterizations and the implausible behavior of the scientists on that icy outpost."But time has been extraordinarily kind to The Thing.
