In the last few years, the streaming wars have brought us a ton of apps with goofy names that either caught on and lasted or fell into the fire. But the companies that had great brand recognition and pedigree usually just named the apps after themselves. But no one has had a more maddening journey than whoever is running the marketing department at HBO. They first released the HBO app, which was simply called HBO. Then it became HBO Go, then HBO Now, then it was HBO Max for a bit, which everyone seemed to be fine with. Inexplicably, they took the pedigree and recognizable HBO off the brand and changed it to MAX. And now, HBO has announced that their app will actually change its name again to....HBO Max.
