A Gun Discharged on the Set of 'Rust' Has Killed the Cinematographer

Safety on set must be paramount at all times. Yesterday, on the set of the film Rust, a prop firearm was discharged by actor Alec Baldwin. According to IATSE Local 44, there were live rounds in the chamber, and this led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The director, Joel Souza, was injured and taken to the hospital as well. He has since been released. Police have not confirmed the claim that there was a live round in the gun. The sheriff's office is still putting together the details, but reports say this happened while the scene was being rehearsed or filmed. The sheriff's department released a statement, saying: "Ms. Hutchins was transported, via helicopter, to University of New Mexico Hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel. Mr. Souza was transported by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical center where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries. This investigation remains open and active.
