Apple internally thinking of abolishing JPEG support
  • Strong internal rumors are that Apple wants to move to new version of their HEIF format. And establish this as paid licensed standard.

JPEG local viewing support will be fully absent both on Macs and iOS devices.

Yet you will be able to view or use JPEG image, to do so it will be sent to Apple Cloud servers and converted either to lossy or lossless HEIF, available option will depend on your payment plan.

Apple Cloud software also will be making image licensing check, faces and object recognition and inserting all this information into the meta fields.

Photographers will be able to pay Apple to add photos into license check database and assign special cost for each usage time.

If you try to use such licensed JPEG or HEIF image in Apple application or application available in Mac Store you will be present with special dialog to pay for one time or perceptual license use. Any applications that go around it and use images directly will be prohibited (on ARM platforms).

All new Apple chips will have special hardware making encoding and decoding of images, and special DRAM section where image data will reside while being fully protected from any access from any code including OS core level. Only special on-chip hardware coprocessor will have access. Hardware decoder will always add special encoded watermark with machine id into any image data that will be rendered to screen or given to application.

Feature is expected to become standard on all Apple devices since 2024. With Macbooks getting it around late 2022.

  • It’s all business, you know, the usual thing. Taking control.

  • Forgot most amazing thing.

License check will also include all famous landmarks recognition and parks recognition (only common places will be recognized by advanced ANN). For usage of any photo with such thing (even if it is family stuff) you will need to pay to corresponding owners, including owners of building designs (long big dream of EU clerks to make everyone pay for it).

Apple also think about offering paid for "face prohibition" technology, so only you and people you approve will be able to open and view photos with your face present on it.

In general - it is staggering big project that now run in total secret and as far as I know it won't be any public revealing, just silent mandatory OS and apps updates.

  • OF COURSE THE MODEL OF INCOME IS PEFECT. people need photos, and by doing this they force the payment.

information will become a privilege in the future.
