720p or 1080i 60fps for slomotion?
  • wish there was a %40 in camera slowmotion function on the gh2... do you recommend 1080i or 720p 60fps to record in for I want to make more slomotion in post?

  • I use both and really not all that much difference in final export apart from a little more ghosting in fast moving lines like a thin paddle shaft rotating using 1080i. Convert the 1080i to 1080p 60fps with interpolation ( resample enabled) then reimport and adjust slowmo on time line, export with resample disabled. Also shoot the slowmo intended footage at 1/120.

  • Technically--and in my own experience--720P uprezes to 1080P better than 1080i does. You have more pixels and your source is not interlaced.

  • That has been my experience as well Douglas, if i had a preference i would choose 720 60p every time. However i just completed a motion intensive shoot that required interlaced shot and interlaced delivery as specs and i have no problems recommending either process in the original posters question. Progressive is definitely better if you intend to use Twixtor processing or delivery is web based.

  • 720p60.

If conforming 60p to 24p, I'd use 1/125 shutter speed. If using Twixtor or Time Warp, jack up the shutter speed to 1/250 or faster.

    BTW come on Gh3!!!!

  • Thank you all for the post! So I need to render two times if I like to use the 720p 60 fps file with my other 1920-1080 24p files if shot.. first render the 720p file as a 1920-1080 60fps file and then its usable on my 1920-1080 24fps timeline together with my other 1920-1080 24fps files? :)

  • I've been wondering the same question.

720p is 0.92Mpixel, while 1080i is 1.03Mpixel since it is only half the frame that is being updated.

Intuitively this would make 1080i better but it is possible that limitations on how the photage is handled makes the 720p better in practice.
