    Direct-type LED TVs featuring Flip Chip LED technology are becoming more prevalent in the market and many China- and Korea-based TV vendors are expected to start using the technology in units released in 2015 in order to reduce LED costs.

    The sources added that currently 42-inch direct-type LED TVs used 24 LEDs, which could be reduced to 12-16 LEDs in 2015 by using the technology.

    Yep, direct type TVs are now cheapest, and instead of using dense RGB backlight we are going opposite way.

    It was bound to happen, they will hope to sell these just slightly under the pricepoint of backlit while increasing the margin. People (the black Friday masses) will think they're getting a deal.

    Well, people want more cheap stuff - people get more cheap stuff.

    For example, factory price of top RGB backlit panel is quite close to price of panel with such cheapened backlight. But. For retail giants and Korean/Chinese manufacturer every dollar after you make summation produce considerable profits.
