Lightworks topic https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4804/lightworks-topic Wed, 03 Oct 2012 18:49:02 +0000 goanna 4804@/talks/discussions

Our solution was to avoid rewriting the Windows-specific code at all (it was, after all, tried, tested and optimized). Instead, we decided to move it to a new operating-system dependent layer which we engineered to have an OS independent interface.

Once this was complete, we were then able to begin work on a Linux implementation of that same layer. In essence, the Lightworks code is now split in two - the OS-independent code (eg. editing, play-engine, etc) which uses the OS-dependent code (eg. file access, threading, etc).

The OS independent code accounts for about 97% of the total codebase. The bulk of the work in porting to Linux was actually in re-engineering the existing code, not in writing the Linux-specific layer.

Linux of course doesn't have [Windows'] Direct3D, so we had to reimplement all the Linux GPU specific code using OpenGL.

This development has been long-awaited. Once again, risk-averse developers are showing us how OSes, once the mainstay of IT revenue, are losing relevance.

What's next - Lightworks for Android? -only a few lines of code away.

Adobe Creative Suite 6, CS6 topic https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2841/adobe-creative-suite-6-cs6-topic Thu, 12 Apr 2012 01:50:27 +0000 sohus 2841@/talks/discussions CS6 Production Premium applications:

  • Adobe Encore CS6
  • Adobe Media Encoder CS6
  • Adobe Story Plus
  • After Effects CS6
  • Audition CS6
  • Photoshop CS6
  • Prelude CS6
  • Premiere Pro CS6
  • Speedgrade CS6

  • An optimized Mercury Playback Engine that is faster than before in software-only mode, and also sports a broader range of choices in graphics cards.

  • Adobe Mercury Transmit gives Adobe I/O hardware partners, such as AJA, Black Magic Design, Bluefish444, Matrox, and MOTU direct access to the Mercury Playback Engine. Using external monitors, you’ll get full-screen playback while maintaining all the real-time performance benefits of the Mercury Playback Engine.
  • Warp Stabilizer and Rolling Shutter Repair, which were previously only in Adobe After Effects.
  • Unlimited cameras in Multicam.
  • New and enhanced editing tools such as adjustment layers very reminiscent of After Effects, trimming directly in the Program Monitor, and a redesigned Audio Mixer. You can now double click to apply effects to selected clips.
  • Three-Way Color Corrector effect, that uses GPU acceleration
  • Adobe Media Encoder is now fully 64 bit software with a much expanded preset list and more efficient batch encoding that makes multiscreen delivery a breeze.

After Effects part

  • Native support for Adobe SpeedGrade .Look files, cineSpace .csp files, and overrange IRIDAS .cube files.
  • Not only is Mocha still there, but you can launch it directly from within After Effects.
  • Global RAM cache. This is a vastly improved frame caching system that allows you to try different options and Undo without a penalty in productivity, as well as render and cache a comp’s work area in the background.
  • Persistent Disk Cache. Previews done in a previous session are saved and immediately available the next time you open a project.
  • New graphics pipeline. With more efficient use of OpenGL, the work environment in After Effects is more highly responsive and smoother. You’ll get faster manipulation of layers with graphical overlays such as masks, motion tracker points, and motion paths. Depending on the hardware, functions may be speeded by anywhere from 1.5 to 16 times!
  • Intelligent 3D Camera Tracker effect.
  • Ray-traced 3D rending engine giving you the capability to quickly design fully ray-traced geometric text and shape layers in 3D space. Pair this engine with, say an nVidia Quadro 2000, and you’ll see over 10 times the performance over CPU-only rendering by a stock Intel i7 3960X processor!
  • Variable mask feather lets you set any number of points along a closed maks and define the width of the feather on a per-point basis
  • Pro Import, previously available as a separate product from Automatic Duck, is now included with After Effects CS6.
  • Effects that were previously 8bpc now support 16bpc or 32 bit float including all of the HD plug-ins of the included CycoreFX HD Suite.

Shotcut https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4082/shotcut Sun, 29 Jul 2012 17:59:17 +0000 karl 4082@/talks/discussions Dan Dennedy, the primary author of MLT (the Media Lovin' Toolkit) recently revealed that he is working on yet another free, open-source non-linear video editor called "Shotcut": http://www.shotcutapp.com/bin/view/Shotcut

As of today, Shotcut is in a very early development stage not doing much beyond playing files.

I must say that I really wonder why Dan decided to start yet another editor based on MLT, given that at least three other NLE's are already based on his MLT framework (kdenlive, OpenShot and Flowblade). But he did not say what he was missing from those existing editors... ;-)

GH2 post-production workflows https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1888/gh2-post-production-workflows Sat, 31 Dec 2011 16:46:53 +0000 sohus 1888@/talks/discussions
Main NLE software:
Avid 6.0
FCP
FCP X
Premiere Pro 6.0
Lightworks
Sony Vegas

Tools:
Clipwrap
5DtoRGB
Aunsoft
...

I have been working with FCPX for a while now and while it worked fine in the beginning, it really became very slow in a big project till the point of being unusable. I am currently trying out Avid. I have worked with Premiere but I hate it. Bad UI, still weird errors after all those years, cluttered interface, dynamic link has many issues, not many keyboard shortcuts, strange tool behaviour... it is a marketing hype but it sucks. I am on a mac so other tools (Lightworks, Vegas) are out of scope for me now. ]]>
VLMC - VideoLAN Movie Creator https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4081/vlmc-videolan-movie-creator Sun, 29 Jul 2012 17:51:39 +0000 karl 4081@/talks/discussions The VideoLan organization (best known for its VLC media player) has started a project called "VLMC" or "VideoLAN Movie Creator", aiming at implementing yet another free, open-source non-linear video editor: http://www.videolan.org/vlmc/

I downloaded the source code, compiled and tried the software briefly. It is not yet at a point where it would make sense to test it for actual usability, as of today, it is at a very early stage of development, and seeking for attention from potential code contributors.

Recommendations for Editing Stations under $3K? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/967/recommendations-for-editing-stations-under-3k Fri, 16 Sep 2011 16:16:00 +0000 qwerty123 967@/talks/discussions
I'm looking to invest in a new computer editing station with dual monitors. I'm looking at Premiere CS5.5 as my main NLE. I don't want to spend more than $3,000 (and preferably not too much more than $2,500). EDIT: I'm specifically looking at getting a PC but discussion about mac or hackintosh are okay too!

I'm guessing some people are in or will be in my situation in the future, so let's start a thread to think of options and recommendations. Ideas? (let's also not turn this into a flame war of mac vs pc vs linux, or fcp vs adobe vs avid!)]]>

Flowblade https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4080/flowblade Sun, 29 Jul 2012 17:45:39 +0000 karl 4080@/talks/discussions Janne Liljeblad recently announced the availability of yet another free, open-source non-linear video editor, called "Flowblade": http://code.google.com/p/flowblade/

Tutorial videos available on vimeo: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3.

Flowblade is based on the MLT framework (as also are kdenlive, OpenShot and Shotcut).

I only briefly tried it - may appeal to people that like the "Avid" user interface. I'll stay with kdenlive for now.
