1) Setup:

  • Fast PC (Threadripper, 64GB RAM, system on M.2 SSD, Windows 10 64bit,...)
  • 2x HGST He10 HDDs (10 TB, 7200rpm, 200+ MB/s sustained read/write speed!, SATA 6Gb/s)
  • Testfile: 50 GB folder with a CDNG image sequence from BMPCCK4k (each image is about 8 MB)

2) Pre-Test:

I tested both HDDs individually => sustained sequential read/write speeds close to 250 MB/s (empty disk) for the 50 GB folder

3) The goal:

I want to Raid 0 those two 10 TB drives to get higher sustained transfere speeds especially when the disks approche 50% capacity (I need arround 300 MB/s).

Videofiles (stored on another HDD) will be copied to the Raid for the time I work on them in Davinci Resolve, only to deliver the data to Resolve. Rendering results will be stored on a SSD (so there is no risk of loosing data even when the raid is totally destroyed). I need at least 10 TB of fast storage, as the RAW CDNG image sequences in 4k are quite large - and I don't have the money to do the same with SSDs.

4) The Problem:

When I convert the two drives in Windows 10 to one "striped-volume" I get a nice 20 TB software Raid 0, but when I test the transfere speed by simply copying the 50 GB folder I get 200 MB/s MAXIMUM transfere speed (thats even below a single drive!). The throughput starts at 400+ MB/s for the first 2-3 seconds filling up the disk caches and some system memory and then plummets to arround 100-200 MB/s, where it stays for the rest of the time.

5) I tried:

different stripe-sizes, an (old) hardware raid controller (even worse results, 150 MB/s max), checking for new system drivers (the Windows HDD disk drivers seem to be from 2006 and are only 32 bit!), checking HGST website for information and of course searching the internet for many many hours (either its a different problem or there is never a solution posted to the problem).

I can't try/use the onboard raid controller of the motherboard (because of Windows bullshit and I can't do a fresh system installation at the moment).

Why isn't it working?! (Setting up a Raid 0 is nothing extraordinary...so I thought.)

UPDATE: After some fiddling with Windows and a system reboot, read performance is high as it should be - only write performance is still bad.

Connecting Windows 10 to Lumix camera issues http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16574/connecting-windows-10-to-lumix-camera-issues Fri, 10 Mar 2017 05:48:05 +0000 Rambalac 16574@/talks/discussions Hi,

Does anybody have any problem with connecting Windows 10 laptop to GH4 or GH3 directly with WiFi? I tried setup cameras as access point and connect to them as usual access point but Windows is in connecting state infinitely. I tried to Add Device and connect from cameras via WiFi direct but after I select laptop in camera nothing happens

I have no any problem connecting camera in both ways using Android device.

And if you know how connect camera via WiFi direct in UWP C# it would be a miracle.

ASUS Zenbook UX303LB-DS74T/UX303LN-R4274H: Anything Better Than This? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13025/asus-zenbook-ux303lb-ds74tux303ln-r4274h-anything-better-than-this Thu, 21 May 2015 09:29:52 +0000 BlueBomberTurbo 13025@/talks/discussions Been searching for a more portable laptop to use than my Late 2013 rMBP 15. I don't mind losing a bit of CPU grunt in exchange for reduced size and improved battery life. The biggest hurdle I've found is finding a competitive screen. I had previously narrowed it down to the new Dell XPS 13 and Acer R13, but the Dell has issues with firmware locked adaptive brightness, and the Acer had horrible viewing angles. Beyond those, it seems like the ASUS UX303 line, specifically the LN (now LB in the US) version with the Nvidia GPU, is the best match for me. The ones listed in the title are roughly the same, just different naming for different regions and a different LCD. Here's a good review with specs:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-Zenbook-UX303LN-Subnotebook-Review.137995.0.html

I really can't find any faults as far as specs, performance, or battery life. Only thing left is to see the screen in person. Is there anything else with similar or better specs at a similar price ($1299 USD w/1800p display + 512GB SSD) that can compare? I'd rather not go back to Apple, as the only reason I bought the rMBP 15 was for the hardware, and I haven't warmed up to OS X or the gimped flavor of Windows run in Parallels and Boot Camp.

If I'm going to upgrade my system, I'd love to know what to aim for, and I'm sure others would, too.

GH2 post production -Premiere Pro CS6 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7773/gh2-post-production-premiere-pro-cs6 Tue, 13 Aug 2013 18:47:31 +0000 tokyo187 7773@/talks/discussions Pertaining to post production with the GH2 - Using slipstream 3 moon hack. As I attempt to bring in footage to Premier Pro CS6 the playback is hicuppy at best, starting with the audio cutting out. Would anyone have any workable preference for this situation. The media files all natively save to a private folder in which I transferred to my HDD. From there I took the footage into Premier. I began with opening the files, then after the hiccups, I decided to import, still same problems occur. Also using Dynamic Link, do you have to import all used media files to each different program?

Windows 8 Intel Corei7-3630QM Geforce GTX 680M / 4GB GDDR5 12GB RAM DDRIIII 750GB 7200RPM

hence, should have no problem running any of these programs in cohesion.

Workflow advice needed - GH2 Sanity 5.1 - Vegas 12 Pro, AE CS6, and Windows 7, where to start http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7358/workflow-advice-needed-gh2-sanity-5.1-vegas-12-pro-ae-cs6-and-windows-7-where-to-start Wed, 26 Jun 2013 05:43:03 +0000 lorilin 7358@/talks/discussions Hi all,

OK, so I've shot a bunch of footage now and need to put it all together. I'm doing the "behind the scenes" video for my partner's forthcoming album. I'll need to send a master to the record company for them to include on the DVD.

I've shot everything in Sanity 5.1 HBR (PAL), which has been super dependable. (Didn't use 24p because of the motion judder.) My worst beginner mistake is that some of my footage is pretty underexposed and will need to be lifted quite a bit. Color profile was smooth -2 all the way.

I can edit the MTS files natively in Vegas Pro 12 and it's plenty fast. But I'd like to do the color correction, titles, etc in AE so I can use ColorGhears (which I am loving!). That's where the confusion starts.

No matter if I open an MTS file directly in AE or export an AAF from Vegas to open in AE, the MTS files are unbearably slow to work with in AE. So my first question is if I should transcode my footage in Vegas before I send it to AE. And if so, what would be the optimal settings? I have the DNxHD codecs installed, and have downloaded 5DtoRGB as well, but am not sure about settings.

System: Windows 7 PC with 32GB 1600mhz RAM, GTX570 graphics card, Intel Core i7 processor, media files on external Raid 10 setup. My Adobe suite is from the Creative Cloud, so I have access to Premiere but don't really have time to learn a new NLE.

What I'd like to do is make my edit in Vegas, and then use AE for my grading/titles/effects etc. I'm super confused about the simplest way to set up my workflow, and about how to set up my project files in Vegas and AE for optimal results.

If anyone out there has any advice, I'd be really grateful! Anyone who helps out will have my undying gratitude (and a thanks in the CD booklet if desired!). And if my questions are too newbish, feel free to get in touch backchannel.

Cheers, Lori

Windows 8 expiriences and rants http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4393/windows-8-expiriences-and-rants Tue, 28 Aug 2012 15:26:25 +0000 endotoxic 4393@/talks/discussions Im using right now Windows 8 64bit release preview Build:8400.

The operating system is very fast in the instalation process, also the boot time. The new interface is a little bit misleading at the begining, but when you actually get over it you understad something like this:

Metro is host, and everything else is applications, just like regular Explorer in windows xp vista or win 7, but in this case Desktop for example is app not an user interface, wich can run apps until a limit, and give you the sense of being in windows but you are in metro, that handdles everithing in a macro level, you mail acounts, facebook acount, videos, cloud drive, everithing is now between your ID and what microsoft can get from it. Aplications like premiere runs free outside the desktop, but can be seen in desktop as regular but is only an ilution. Its seems like they have learned from Facebook that user is willing to give info in exchage of access.

Ive noticed that the video playback not only is natively more smooth, but also i dont know how to tell but the detail is better, my eye has memory of my own video shots, and they look much crisper in win 8, 1080p is more detailed in the same monitor while using same codecs, metro is doing something better with the hardware it has. The OS is very fast, and flows easy, even though glitches are evident, they come to ocurre in very wired ways. Its evident how they have done the OS to take multiple plataforms in acount, and multiple tasks. They take virtualization aproach very sirius and so dont expect any perfect scenario.

As premiere, CS5.5 runs smooth, but havent try hours editing yet.

The overral feeling is rapid response, low use of memory and the feeling of being not in deep control for advance users as previous versions.

Edit: Also the color space seem to be better handle, since i see more Dynamic range in some shoot i thought where crushed. Its strage, really. (As making this edit the Os crushed 2 times while running CPU-Z.)

System specs: Core i5 2500k at 4.3ghz 16gb Ram at 1333 1TB HDD capacity at 7200rpm as main drive Gforce GTX560 1024mb DDR5 Asus p67 deluxe
