This was our fun winter project, its in german (no subs), but one can get the meaning anyways I guess. ;-)

Technical details

Camera:

  • GH3 (unhacked since no hacks available itm)

Lenses:

  • 12mm 1.6 SLR Magic (should not have passed quality control at SLR Magic as you might see)
  • 25mm 0.95 Nokton
  • 35mm 1.4 Samyang
  • 40mm 1.8 Hexanon
  • 50mm 1.7 Pentax K
  • 85mm 1.4 Samyang (what a nice portrait lens for this money!)

Post:

  • Premiere
  • After Effects
  • bunch of plugins
  • bunch of people
  • a little time

Additonal Comments: The GH3 is a nice little cam and dids its job very well. I did not really recognize the difference in latitude, but had no direct comparision anyways. Moire did hit us once pretty hard. Until its hacked I prefer GH2 since 72 Mbit is just not enough for Intra.

Any kind of feedback is very welcome.

(edit: Markup preview and final view if completly different!)

So I invite you all to list your favorite lenses that have helped you to achieve that filmic look on GH1, GH2 and GH3.

Is it possible for GH3 ? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5818/is-it-possible-for-gh3- Fri, 18 Jan 2013 05:56:49 +0000 Max_Kislinsky 5818@/talks/discussions Is it possible to increase dynamic range to 4:2:2 10bit or greater?

I've heard, that GH3 can record in 4K 20 frames per second and memory card capable to store 95 Mb/s. Therefore if we narrow size to 16mm (10.6mm x 6mm) is it possible to record RAW video?

In video mode replace exposure numbers with rotary disc shutter angle: 1/32 = 270° (?) | 1/48 = 180° (add) | 1/50 = 172.8° | 1/60 = 144°; | 1/96 = 90° (add) | 1/120 = 72° (add)

Add Frame Line - The aspect ratio frame  1.85:1 (35mm theatrical), 2.35:1 (Cinemascope)

GH3 lines or banding at high ISOs (3200 6400) in video mode http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5738/gh3-lines-or-banding-at-high-isos-3200-6400-in-video-mode Thu, 10 Jan 2013 12:04:49 +0000 djhessler 5738@/talks/discussions I'm curious if anyone is getting lines or banding in high ISO's with the GH3 in video mode, I get horrible lines/banding that honestly make my gh2 more pleasing to the eye. I have attached a file with file of 6400 ISO to make my point, of course I would probably never use 6400 but even at 3200 the lines are noticeable, any one else have this issue?

UPDATE: lol I always end up finding answers to my problems, well as it turns out, I was testing the high iso feature with a 14-42 X lens and that was causing those lines, I slapped a manual lens with no IS and no electronics and now I see how clean my 3200 setting is, so people watch out with those Panny lenses :-)

GH3 VF Solution http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5649/gh3-vf-solution Wed, 02 Jan 2013 19:12:05 +0000 jimagine 5649@/talks/discussions I mentioned I was talking to the Hoodman people trying to come up with a solution for a VF to fit the new camera. They were unable to get one to do tests, so I was giving them measurements and I came up with a thought.

So I ordered another HoodLoupe and HoodMag for a whopping $120 and I was right. All you need is the Manfrotto 501PL QR plate and you're all set - that's it.

The extended 501 and the existing EVF create a perfect compression fit - I mean better than any system out there, and we've got most of them. When I first measured the camera I realized that the little ridge to the left of the screen should make a perfect stop and it did (although it doesn't need it.)

It's perfectly light leakless (hey, a new word) and fits snug as if it were part of the GH3. It weighs nothing and costs just a little more than that.

I noticed that the new version of the HoodLoupe is a tighter diopter and eyecup than the other couple we have which is great. I mentioned the other day that I thought it was optically equal to the Z-Finder Pro. It's not quite, but it's really good and clear and 3x mag. For a hundred bucks or so, it's a silly good fit.

GH2, GH3, and LX7 resolution charts http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5366/gh2-gh3-and-lx7-resolution-charts Mon, 03 Dec 2012 10:43:52 +0000 mpgxsvcd 5366@/talks/discussions GH3, GH2, and LX7 resolution test chart comparison

I haven’t been able to post much this weekend. However, I have been doing a ton of testing. Here are some resolution chart screen captures for the GH3, GH2, and LX7.

I have only included a few of the samples in this post. Honestly, some of them are just so close to others that it really isn’t necessary to post all of them here. For those of you who want to see all of them I have a link below that will allow you to download all of them at once in a .zip file. I will post the original video files to a downloadable Vimeo Account later today.

First off the GH2 and GH3 are very close in resolution and I haven’t been able to detect moire in either of them. They both can exhibit very slight aliasing but only with test charts and not in real world situations.

Whatever moire we saw in pre-production models is not existent in my NTSC GH3.

I included the GH2 1080p @ 24 FPS(Mildly hacked) image here because increasing the bit rate does nothing for resolution of a static image like this. I also included the 1080p @ 60 FPS, 1080p @ 24 FPS All I, 1080p @ 24 FPS regular, 1080i and 720p @ 60 FPS AVC-HD images here. In addition I have charts from -5 sharpness through +5 for the GH3. However, you have to download the .zip file to see those.

All of the GH3’s 1080p settings are very similar except for the ones that are derived from 1080i(ie: 1080i/60 and 1080p @ 30 FPS). The 1080i derived ones show much more aliasing.

Take a look at the GH3 1080p @ 24 FPS AVC-HD and compare it to the 1080p @ 24 FPS all I. The files are almost identical. Again for static scenes the bit rate does not matter and it won’t affect resolution.

I personally like the 1080p @ 60 FPS mode the best. It is absolutely wonderful to have the flexibility to record 1080p @ 60 FPS and play real time or switch to slow motion without having to make that decision beforehand.

I have settled on +2 sharpness for my liking. I am sure yours will vary from that depending on how much you want to edit it. It appears that -2 or -3 sharpness is closest to an unsharpened RAW image. Therefore, shooting with a -5 sharpness and applying in post might not actually be beneficial.

It was too much trouble to post all of those images here so you have to download the zip file if you want to see the sharpness settings. All of the test images are shot with Standard Color mode 0 Contrast, 0 Color, lowest Noise Reduction at ISO 200, with the 35-100mm lens @ 35mm F3.2.

What I found most interesting is how the LX7 did. Don’t get me wrong it isn’t even close to the GH2 or the GH3. However, this is a $300 camera (When I bought it) and it shoots VERY GOOD 1080p @ 60 FPS video. The 720p @ 120 FPS is not good because of severe aliasing. However, it is much better than the 720p @ 120 FPS of my GoPro 3 Black.

Gh3 live waveform monitoring http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5485/gh3-live-waveform-monitoring Fri, 14 Dec 2012 15:20:21 +0000 Chris74 5485@/talks/discussions Hi I just got my GH3 and was wondering what would be the most Cost effective way to get live wave monitoring. Unfortunately, waveforms are missing in the cam. How about FCPX? Know that Blackmagic has a solution but at 400 euro rather expensive and seems to be SDI. I guess external monitors with waveform are going to be expensive too.

Thanks for your help

GH2 vs GH3 HDMI Monitor Output? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5194/gh2-vs-gh3-hdmi-monitor-output Wed, 14 Nov 2012 10:01:00 +0000 willianaleman 5194@/talks/discussions The only feature that would make me jump and upgrade from GH2 to GH3 is the limitation in the GH2 of output monitoring though the HDMI to an external monitor. When using an external monitor during recording, spanning gets interrupted no matter what spanning patch is being used. The GH2 just stops recording.

Accordingly to the last response I got from V. Kiselev in this forum was that it hasn't been fixed. Then, accurate focus is the biggest issue I have been encountering with the GH2, specially for run and gun type of shooting. I'm hoping that the GH3 doesn't have this issue.

also, any idea how the 100mbps+ hacks impact the life of the camera? i recall reading something by a panasonic engineer who thought the hack "overload" would diminish the lifecycle. any real world examples of this?

Having had a very long chat with a Panasonic representative who has just come back from the 2012 internal product range launch in Germany at the start of the month, I think we can safely say that there will be no GH3 (replacement for the GH2) until sometime around October 2012 at the earliest. Taking a sneek peek at the launch schedule for 2012 and up-and-coming products from Pann's consumer division, this bares fruit as the checkboxes for GH2 don't stop until October. Here's the sneek peeks from the schedule. Also note, it seems the GX1 will become the budget camera of choice looking at the full year ahead.

They will also have a MASSIVE opportunity to hit hard into Canon and the rest of the market – I don't see anything too radical announced from their competition – Panny's opportunity is here; they can truly establish m4/3 with a blinding top spec flagship product. If they can sort out HDMI, improved codec for 25p/30p, true 24p/60p, 4:2:2 (could be asking for too much), picture profile editor, and they'll have a winner. This is NOT too tall an order. I think I speak for a lot of us, that we would pay 25% more for such a product. However, its more than likely they'll keep it below the AF video camera spec.

Full suport of H.264 in stream via ethernet Dynamic range pixel by pixel 120x improvement. Full HD, even a 2048*1536 image (4:3) Its a CCD Has Face detection software Finally some interesting thing, the whole sensor board inside can move, forward and backwards, for better color reproduction, making a "moving flange rage" tech allready available.

I know its a CCD technology but Its funny how they CAN make some dynamic rage improvements in CCD and giving us shit CMOS dynamic range on GHx series. Ok sensor sise wise and tech its a totally diferent, but achivement is possible and proved tech. I dont mind having a Black and white mega dynamic range mode in GH3, really not joking, it should be grate!!

Well its all, share your thoughts.

What would happen to the GH3! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3463/what-would-happen-to-the-gh3 Sun, 03 Jun 2012 17:35:09 +0000 sicovdplas 3463@/talks/discussions He dudes,

I guess i'm not the only one waiting for the new Panasonic Gh3, it's rumored to be announced somewhere in Aug/Sept. this year. What i was wondering was, Since PV (Vitaliy) is now working for Panasonic, we thought why would Panasonic make the Gh3 hackable, or will it be needed to hack it at all?

We thought you would have to sign a confidentiality contract(?) in terms of what you can or cannot do with the information provided at your (new) work. In our taste it would not make sense if the upcoming succesor of the GH2 would be hackable.

for example: - If the gh3 is hackable, what would happen to the AF100 line? It would destroy this higher end model, something that is already happening now. - Why would a Engineer such as Vitaly be hired, and after 'some' time it would be hackable, while he is providing for panasonic. - Maybe it will ship with 100mbit+ AVC Ultra? And we don't need a hack, but why would panasonic do this? - Diffrent models, pricing for diffrent bitrates? it would not make sense since it is a consumer camera, people that do vacational photography would not care.
- Can we expect higher priced models, with mayb a new(ish) sensor, higher rates, no new features?

Let's ramble up the discussion! Cheers.

GH3/GH2/GH1 Cage CNC Solid Block Aluminium Development http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3250/gh3gh2gh1-cage-cnc-solid-block-aluminium-development- Fri, 18 May 2012 06:07:12 +0000 jakef 3250@/talks/discussions Firstly I would like to thank everyone's input regarding the GH2 as well as details about cage requirements throughout Personal View. VK I like that you say things as it is... also all developers thank you and well done with the "The Great Camera Shootout" results!

I'm currently finalising Cad drawings for the Cage, my idea is to make a cage that would complement the GH2 visually as well as being practical in a profesional environment.

I know we would like all bells and wistles (anything can be made or added) but please keep in mind that i need to keep the cost down as so far machining time looks to be around one hour per cage plus black hard anodising plus included accesories ie; HDMI clamp . Saying that i would like to price it realistically. So far i'm very exited, the Cage looks very professional. I will attach pics as soon as i finish drawings sometime next week. If all goes well we could have a batch of 25 in a 2-3 weeks.

A bit about me, I've enjoyed building film equipment as much as i have using a camera. Thus far i've build and tweaked various rigs ie; stabliser, motorised timelapse slider, follow focus rig. I've also played around with converting bolex lenses for Micro 43, some 8mm lenses do work with the GH2 EX Tele Conv Mode with great results. I started using the GF1 when the hack talks was still on another forum, and i'm now using a GH2. I am passionate about seeing professional equipment becoming more accessible for all filmakers to focus on creativity to tell their stories.

I am based near Richmond in the UK where the cage will be made.

I appreciate any input regarding this venture.

This site has the biggest amount of GH2 users that Panasonic will target with upcoming GH3. What features do you miss the most (GH2) and would wish to see implemented (GH3).

We still have some time, who knows, Panasonic might listen...
