Software to trim MP4 4k files without recoding http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18127/software-to-trim-mp4-4k-files-without-recoding Sat, 04 Nov 2017 07:26:55 +0000 MarcioK 18127@/talks/discussions Hi, guys. Do you know any software (free is possible) that allows you to trim Panasonic's (GX85, in the case) MP4 4k files without recoding? I have a lot of footage with begin / end without usable material (the shutter button of the GX85 sometimes did not stop the recording), and I wish to trim the excesses before moving it to my permanent storage.

Media Composer First , Free lite editor http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12780/media-composer-first-free-lite-editor Sun, 12 Apr 2015 11:06:59 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 12780@/talks/discussions

The software is designed to be easy to use yet powerful, and a great introduction to professional video editing software. Media Composer | First has all the tools to create a project from start to finish and to deliver a finished movie in professional formats and to popular web outlets, unlike some freeware products that disable critical features like saving or delivering finished projects. It includes many of the same features as industry-standard Media Composer. It also lets you expand those tools and feature sets through additional purchases including plug-ins, options, and additional applications. You’ll also be able to buy stock footage and music. All Media Composer | First projects are stored in the cloud; some projects and cloud storage space are included,, with the opportunity to purchase more. Additionally, users have the opportunity to upgrade to a full version of Media Composer without losing any options, plugins, projects, add-ons etc. that were purchased with Media Composer | First.

Media Composer | First is still in development, and won’t be available until later in 2015. It will also offer limited functionality.

4k denoise: neatvideo versus in camera noise reduction http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17833/4k-denoise-neatvideo-versus-in-camera-noise-reduction Sun, 24 Sep 2017 19:01:43 +0000 apefos 17833@/talks/discussions Neatvideo render time in 4k video is very long, very slow render, very time consuming, but quality is better than in camera noise reduction, so...

Two options for 4k denoise:

1 - use noise reduction "-5" in camera and use neatvideo in post production for a better quality denoise.

2 - use noise reduction "0" in camera and avoid neatvideo in post-production for a faster workflow.

Which one to choose?

Method for Closed Captions in Premiere Pro http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17071/method-for-closed-captions-in-premiere-pro Thu, 01 Jun 2017 10:48:07 +0000 Brian_Siano 17071@/talks/discussions I'm working on a filmed play, and I'd love to add closed captions to the project. Since it's a play, I have a script as a Word file, and it shouldn't be difficult to take that text and convert it to a set of closed captions, right? Well, it's work, so here goes.

First of all, captioning requires that each line be associated with a timecode, which determine when the caption appears and disappears. In the past, this would have to be hand-entered, but the latest release of Premiere Pro allows users to move sliders to adjust the timecodes. So the main hurdle here is getting the captions into Premiere Pro, where we can fine-tune the timing.

Still, the transcript we're importing has to have some time codes in it. So we have to convert the script to a format that does. Here's a method that I use that isn't perfect, but it accomplishes a lot. 1) Paste the script into an Excel spreadsheet, so that each line of dialogue is in a separate row. 2) Insert columns before the dialogue. In one column, insert a number sequence (1,2,3, etc.) This will help you preserve the original order if you resort the list for some reason. You will probably have to break some longer stretches of dialogue into several rows, so these numbers come in handy. 3) Use two columns for your timecode, and use the format "hh:mm:ss". This can only handle timecode as far as hours, minutes and seconds. (Don't worry about frames for now.) 4) Take the duration of your video (say, half an hour) and divide it by the number of lines of dialogue. That gives you an average length of time for an average line of dialogue (say, three seconds). You can fill in the Timecode columns with timecodes that increase by three seconds.

Basically, if you're good with spreadsheets, you can use Excel to reconfigure your captions pretty effectively. You can now use this spreadsheet with a word processor to merge this data into a format that works as a captions file. The easiest to use is the *.srt format, which looks like this:

1 00:00:01,1 --> 00:00:06,1 ACT ONE

2 00:00:07,1 --> 00:00:12,1 JULIANA: They’re not even up yet!

3 00:00:13,1 --> 00:00:17,1 BERTA: That’s just what I said, Miss Juliana. Remember how late the boat got in last night. Yes, and once they got home, the young bride had so much to unpack before she would go to bed.

The format is simple. The first timecode, followed by ",1" to signify frames. The two dashes and an arrow. And then the text of the caption, which ends with a double linefeed.

Premiere Pro's Problems - Open versus Closed Captions. Now, you'd think that you could simply Import this file, apply it to your tineline, and adjust those timecode sliders to time the captions right. But that's not correct.

You see, Premiere Pro cannot import SRT files as Closed Captions. It interprets them solely as Open Captions, and you can't change them afterward. (Converting Closed to Open, and Open to Closed, would be a great feature to request.) So you need to take this SRT file, and convert it again to a format that PP imports as Closed Captions. Such as SCC format, which looks like this:

Luckily, there is a website (https://www.rev.com/captionconverter) that enables you to upload an SRT file and convert it to SCC.

At that point, you have to place the captions into your project, and then use the sliders to adjust the timecodes.

If you're like Vitaliy you'll probably have some sort of collection of scanned grain, flares, leaks, wipes, transitions, layers' skulls, effects and so on. Though not in every an each project, these resources, can be handy in some situations.

Projection Films has a nice set of these in FHD and 4K flavours. Many ( the ones in the folders) are FHD proRes. The files are licensed by Tim Clague under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0

It takes quite some time to download ALL of them. I left a 4.77GB zip file at mega ( use any browser but safari) case you don't want to go through the hassle. If you find them usefull consider donating to Tim >> http://projectorfilms.blogspot.pt/p/free-hd-downloads.html http://projectorfilms.blogspot.pt/p/free-4k-light-leaks.html

  • Adobe Encore CS6
  • Adobe Media Encoder CS6
  • Adobe Story Plus
  • After Effects CS6
  • Audition CS6
  • Photoshop CS6
  • Prelude CS6
  • Premiere Pro CS6
  • Speedgrade CS6

  • An optimized Mercury Playback Engine that is faster than before in software-only mode, and also sports a broader range of choices in graphics cards.

  • Adobe Mercury Transmit gives Adobe I/O hardware partners, such as AJA, Black Magic Design, Bluefish444, Matrox, and MOTU direct access to the Mercury Playback Engine. Using external monitors, you’ll get full-screen playback while maintaining all the real-time performance benefits of the Mercury Playback Engine.
  • Warp Stabilizer and Rolling Shutter Repair, which were previously only in Adobe After Effects.
  • Unlimited cameras in Multicam.
  • New and enhanced editing tools such as adjustment layers very reminiscent of After Effects, trimming directly in the Program Monitor, and a redesigned Audio Mixer. You can now double click to apply effects to selected clips.
  • Three-Way Color Corrector effect, that uses GPU acceleration
  • Adobe Media Encoder is now fully 64 bit software with a much expanded preset list and more efficient batch encoding that makes multiscreen delivery a breeze.

After Effects part

  • Native support for Adobe SpeedGrade .Look files, cineSpace .csp files, and overrange IRIDAS .cube files.
  • Not only is Mocha still there, but you can launch it directly from within After Effects.
  • Global RAM cache. This is a vastly improved frame caching system that allows you to try different options and Undo without a penalty in productivity, as well as render and cache a comp’s work area in the background.
  • Persistent Disk Cache. Previews done in a previous session are saved and immediately available the next time you open a project.
  • New graphics pipeline. With more efficient use of OpenGL, the work environment in After Effects is more highly responsive and smoother. You’ll get faster manipulation of layers with graphical overlays such as masks, motion tracker points, and motion paths. Depending on the hardware, functions may be speeded by anywhere from 1.5 to 16 times!
  • Intelligent 3D Camera Tracker effect.
  • Ray-traced 3D rending engine giving you the capability to quickly design fully ray-traced geometric text and shape layers in 3D space. Pair this engine with, say an nVidia Quadro 2000, and you’ll see over 10 times the performance over CPU-only rendering by a stock Intel i7 3960X processor!
  • Variable mask feather lets you set any number of points along a closed maks and define the width of the feather on a per-point basis
  • Pro Import, previously available as a separate product from Automatic Duck, is now included with After Effects CS6.
  • Effects that were previously 8bpc now support 16bpc or 32 bit float including all of the HD plug-ins of the included CycoreFX HD Suite.

I just switched to a Windows laptop from being an a Mac and I was hoping I could ask a few questions.

Firstly what the Prores alternatives on windows? I know there is Cineform and DNXHR, though there are so many diffrent choices and flavors it is hard to know which one to choose. My intermediate and archive codecs in the past have been prores 4444 and prores 4444xq. What are similar choices on Windows and also what are the editors and graders using?? What is the standard most people use on windows?

Also can anyone recomend a good video player to be able to check my footage on? Something I can go back and forward frame by frame.

Thanks

I just started using a windows machine after using a mac for a long time.

I have been having this weird scrolling issue where scrolling up and down on the timeline is intermittent.

Sometimes i can use the mouse scroll wheel to go up and down, sometimes i cant.

My display scaling was set to 150. When I set it to 100 percent (so native for the high res display) then restarted the computer, the problem went away. Everything is now scrolling fine.

Also if I went to display options, to use my monitor for full screen playback, it didnt fill the whole screen. Only when set my scaling to 100 percent and restarting, did it become full screen.

There seems to be a scaling issue with Premiere.

Does anyone else have this issue?

It would be nice not to have to have scaling so low for day to day use.

I learn something almost daily. While I've read posts in several places on this topic, I've not found consensus, but have run into issues. Here's the scenario:

I'm shooting 4K with the GH4 for all the benefits including punch in, pans, etc. Final output is 1080p. Occasionally I'll mix in some HD footage.

The last project I did was 6.5 mins, but much to my surprise was really dragging down my computer. I wonder if some of you with more experience can suggest a better workflow. I'm hoping to avoid buying a new computer for another year, but will do what I must when I can. Here's what I'm working with:

Premiere Pro CC iMac (Retina 5K, 27 inch, Late 2014) 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 16 GB 1600 MGz DDR3 AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB

To create a sequence, I've simply dragged the the first 4k clip to the timeline and let Premiere handle the settings accordingly. I edit, then export as HD.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and advice!

Any edit fix for either stepped aperture or ISO http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15236/any-edit-fix-for-either-stepped-aperture-or-iso Sat, 18 Jun 2016 10:07:16 +0000 belfryman 15236@/talks/discussions I'm editing some drone footage and one of the shots clearly steps either aperture or ISO as it rises from a dark area into a blue sky. I wondered if anyone knew any nice (easy) solutions! I'm in FCP but if it involves resolve or premier happy to explore. Thank you.

Film grain http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2627/film-grain Tue, 20 Mar 2012 04:46:40 +0000 dansyver 2627@/talks/discussions I've been playing around with various film scans to overlay footage shot on my GH2 from companies who offer free samples such as Cinegrain, Rgrain and Gorilla Grain to give it a slightly more analogue feel. I do think they work pretty good, but the samples provided are usually grainy 8mm and 16mm stock with dirt and scratches instead of cleaner 35mm grain. Has anyone here on the forum purchased these products or similar ones? User experiences?

FCPX and iphone, landscape footage shows as portrait on import http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14403/fcpx-and-iphone-landscape-footage-shows-as-portrait-on-import Sat, 09 Jan 2016 10:14:55 +0000 belfryman 14403@/talks/discussions Sorry, bit below the radar but have students shooting films on their iphones and I'm editing in FCPX and testing it with my wife's phone - I like my android phones myself - the footage that is shot landscape and imports as landscape into imovie and photos shows as portrait in FCPX. Two questions if anyone knows the answers, a) is there a way to get FCPX to see the footage as landscape when importing to save importing to photos and exporting and then importing that file into FCPX which works for some reason and b) if I do the alternative workaround, rotate the footage 90 degrees in the timeline and scale to 180% will it be scaling a reduced version of the image and be baaad or will it be just stretching the image out to the natural dimensions with no loss of quality? Merci.
