Since it's coming out soon, does anyone know can this combination supports playing hacked AVCHD videos through USB SD card reader.

I guess the question is... firstly can it play the HD videos for quick on-site testing and secondly does the USB port supports SDHC card reader?

Thanks

Entry Audio Interfaces http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4816/entry-audio-interfaces Thu, 04 Oct 2012 19:55:46 +0000 thepalalias 4816@/talks/discussions For a discussion of similar but higher-end gear please visit the thread at http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4818/mid-to-high-level-professional-audio-interfacesrecorders-pres-and-converters-for-studio

I noticed that in all the discussion of audio on the site, experienced people have frequently covered inexpensive mics and recorders, and occasionally covered more expensive mics and software - but we have not often covered the audio interfaces used in project studios and professional audio environments.

Audio interfaces, pres and converters determine how your sound both gets recorded and how you hear it when it plays back.

Since we have a lot of experienced audio people here, I would like to open the floor to discussing some of the options and pros and cons of different options.

I'll list some of them below.

Note the interface (Firewire, PCI, USB 2.0, etc.) required and see whether it is compatible with your current hardware as well as portable to other systems. USB options tend to be compatible with the widest range while Firewire is the most popular type used in professional audio interfaces for the last decade.

USB 3.0 options would be great (greatly exceeding the bandwidth of the Firewire flavors supported on the audio interfaces listed so far on paper) but the audio interface manufacturers have not readily embraced it.

Thunderbolt deserves special discussion. Thunderbolt has massive bandwidth and some computers feature it instead of Firewire. There are accessories you can buy to connect Firewire devices to your Thunderbolt port, so don't rule Firewire interfaces out just because you have a Thunderbolt computer.

This is for the higher end ones.

Firewire cards can also be purchased for PCI and PCI-e systems, so if you have a desktop, there is a good chance you can use a Firewire interface. When buying a Firewire card, try to get one with a Texas Instrument chipset - these are the most widely compatible.

Note that some Firewire interfaces can be powered by the computer connection, while others require AC power. Few laptops provide enough power to run a Firewire device off this alone, but some do. Look for a full-size 6-pin connector as opposed to a 4-pin one if this your intent.

If you have concerns about the compatibility between your system and your audio interface, you can buy pre-built audio certified computers (with or without your chosen interface) from any of the following (as well as may others).

Ultrastudio Express vs Ultrastudio 3d http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4565/ultrastudio-express-vs-ultrastudio-3d Thu, 13 Sep 2012 06:02:07 +0000 mlysbakken 4565@/talks/discussions Does anyone know if there is any major difference between Ultrastudio Express and Ultrastudio 3d, apart from 3d-playback and 4:4:4 capture? I know Ultrastudio 3d makes it possible for a MacBook Pro to perform smoothly with DaVinci Resolve (so that you can grade on the fly), but I haven't found any information regarding the limits of the Ultrastudio Express. Does it boost the real time performance of your NLE's and grading software, or does it just capture and play back?

Production monitors ? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4662/production-monitors- Fri, 21 Sep 2012 11:17:57 +0000 robbie75vr 4662@/talks/discussions Hi guys,

I'm grading my footage for a couple of years now, and I'm trying to learn something new everyday... At the moment I edit with a new iMac 27" color calibrated every 2-3 months with Datacolor Spyder 3 colorimeter. My work productions are for internet use, usually youtube or vimeo.

I was wondering if is it important or not, and why, to us a monitor built specifically for this purpose when I do the grading as the real pro do, or if it is something not so relevant if the video destination is youtube on consumer computers....

Please educate me about that

Thanks

HDD issues and repair topic http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4506/hdd-issues-and-repair-topic Sat, 08 Sep 2012 06:14:29 +0000 inqb8tr 4506@/talks/discussions Yesterday I have copied footage from cards on a hard drive, and while watching clips, i noticed some kind of glitches and drops appearing. I realized that it happens only with footage copied to one particular hard drive - 1-2 months old 2TB seagate ST2000DM001. When I copied files from same cards onto another hdd everything was ok. When I copied files (with drops) from seagate to another drive, and played them from the healthy drive - footage was damaged, video glitches like half frame drop, something like that, in movist it is like bright green blocks, in other players and Premiere they are just transparent half frame drops, similar to damaged beta tape, if anyone remembers that. Some files don't have glitches but when I copy them on the same drive but to another folder, they get damaged. This happens with MTS files and also after transcoding to Prores422 HQ. Luckily I always backup new jobs immediately, but I have some other projects on that drive.

Is that hdd dying? I didn't know that dying hdd can damage video files internally.

Ergonomic Keyboards for Video Work? Experiences? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4460/ergonomic-keyboards-for-video-work-experiences Mon, 03 Sep 2012 15:15:41 +0000 qwerty123 4460@/talks/discussions In my reckless youth, I didn't care about proper typing, etc. But now I have to be more careful, as sustained periods of keyboard use from editing (and writing), cause problems.

There are some discussions online about ergonomic keyboards, but none of them is specific to the kind of work we do as videomakers. So I think it might be good to have a discussion / sharing of experience of different ergonomic keyboard options out there as it relates to video work.

I'll start: the only real "ergonomic" keyboard I've had experience with is the mass-produced Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard. Here are my thoughts about it:

  • it takes up a lot of space
  • the keys are harder to press than, say, a standard apple keyboard,
  • is a little funky on Mac OS
  • I notice minor improvements how I feel when I'm typing
  • relatively cheap compared to other options (also feels a little cheap)

I'm interested in the "truly ergonomic keyboard" which is here: https://secure.trulyergonomic.com/ Does anyone have experience with it?

What do other people use / think about the products they have used?

MBP questions http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4461/mbp-questions Mon, 03 Sep 2012 19:52:40 +0000 elmerlang 4461@/talks/discussions Hi I'm considering purchasing an MBP Retina 15.4". I edit with FCP. Any opinions would be appreciated but I also have some questions:

Is there some important dif between the 2.6 and 2.7 processors? It seems a little silly to have a .1 dif unless there is.

Anyone editing on the Retina version find glare a problem? In my prev mbp I chose the flat instead of glossy version because of less glare, and the retina version I saw at Apple store today seems like it would have problems.

Is the flash drive superior to the usual?

The apple person was saying how the retina version doesn't show pixels in blowups of pics but wouldn't that be a kind of fake version of a pic and wouldn't one be better off seeing the problems?

Would you say I'm incredibly good looking or just really really good looking? (Sorry, that slipped out.)

Anywho, any opinions, tips or info would be appreciated.

Video I/O Experience and Advice? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4101/video-io-experience-and-advice Tue, 31 Jul 2012 15:18:33 +0000 qwerty123 4101@/talks/discussions Following up on a thread I started a while back--Broadcast Monitor for Color Correction vs Affordable Alternatives--to which there were quite useful replies, I want now to ask people about their experiences and recommendations for a video I/O device to help get a "near" broadcast quality image on a second computer monitor / HD TV.

I'd ideally like something that:

  • Is compatible with both Mac and PC
  • Can be used with CS5.5, CS6, (compatibility with Avid and FCP are bonus
  • can work with davinci resolve
  • Not more than $600 ($900 absolute highest if it's really worth the extra $)

I know of the Matrox MXO mini, but I don't have any experience with it or any other box.

Also, is there any box solution that will work on an old 2007 Imac that lacks both a PCI slot and a thunderbolt?

I'm planning on doing a little travelling and I could do with a portable device that can let me review footage and archive it to an external HD.

I just ordered one. You can take the full SD Card out of your GH2 or whatever and stick into the tablet to view pictures in full 10 inch screen. You can also plug a USB hard drive into it at the same time to pass the files off the SD card onto an external exFat drive. I think you can also view the AVCHD videos but this I am not 100% sure if you can do natively. Anybody try it? I think the mobo player in the Android market plays them? This is the only tablet I know of with a USB host other than the Transformer Prime but with that you have to buy the keyboard dock to get the ports, not on the Thrive. http://us.toshiba.com/tablets/thrive/10-inch/

Procaster is free software on windows or mac and I use it for webcasting live events. I am thinking it could take the 1080 50i and deinterlace it and you could livestream at 25 progressive.

I am going to buy the blackmagic intensity and test it out..... http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/

So do I need to hack the camera first or does it not matter?

Do I need to hit the record button or does it not matter?

Any help on this ASAP would be appreciated as I have the event Sunday. I have backups should the gh2 / blackmagic to laptop into procaster livetsream software not work.... but I would love for it to work.

I want to set up the gh2 with the 1.7 pancake lens for a wide live stream and the jump around with my gh13 for actual coverage. I'm still very new to the GH2 and make some boo boos where as I know every crevice of the gh13 like my ex girlfriend.

ps to give you an example of what is capable with livestream: this is a live broadcast in hd with webcams and the gh13 prerecorded footage cued and played live from a laptop:

pretty f-ing impressive.. make sure you full screen it.

Is the 120 gb enough or get the 240gb? Next is the graphics card. Was looking at the radeon 7970. Is this a good choice or something like the gtx 580 ? Lastly im looking at 2560x1600 resolution monitors is this over kill? Or will the extra sharpness in color.help any thanks Seth
