Some time ago I've been thinking that one day they will see cameras with dreamy benefits available to our pockets and BMC has taken the first big step.

After impact caused by Pocket Camera at NAB seems as if all DSLR cameras literally stay in the past, the film market and videographic intermediate, semi-pro and professional low budget now has a gear of very low cost, then I wonder how that argument would have for example someone who wants today to buy a 5D MKIII about U$3000 for videos and films when for a third of the cost you have a body that offers RAW with 13 EVF of DR. Who less would suffer possibly are cameras under US$1,000 where the user amateur looking a camera for photo and with video to record the dog pacing on the garden, the family eating BBQ, an afternoon at the beach or something without more pretense, but I dont know if that market segment is sufficient for these traditional manufacturers.

I assume that traditional manufacturers must have a headache because they did not expect this movement. Anybody what will buy a camera for video a film low cost will prefer a DSLR digital -regardless the record format- to a camera to record in RAW?

BMC's movement beneficent the market because it will be forced to Sony, Panasonic, Canon and Nikon to compete with similar or better gear features, that or leave the market for inematographers and filmakers low budget because they havent argument to compete equal now.

PS, sorry for my poor english.

4K raw camera at upcoming NAB rumors https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6563/4k-raw-camera-at-upcoming-nab-rumors Mon, 01 Apr 2013 00:54:57 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 6563@/talks/discussions

Rough translation made by one of our members:

We had so many problems with our video cameras lately. They are all outdated and price is hugely overblown. Look at our TV business, it is barely alive. Are we wanting to follow? We don't have much for uncoming NAB exhibition. And as I know one of competitors is preparing absolutely revolutional and cheap 4K resolution camera to be released at NAB. And it shoots this in raw. Imagine, 4K raw camera available for everyone! And where are we standing? Terrible!

Some specs leaked in last week on different sites:

  • 4Kx4K square oversized m43 sensor
  • 13 stops dynamic range
  • Raw recording to external SSD
  • 120fps, but on what resolution?
  • No screen
  • Priced below BMC

BlackMagic: All shortcomings in one place, discussion https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2974/blackmagic-all-shortcomings-in-one-place-discussion Sun, 22 Apr 2012 12:09:44 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 2974@/talks/discussions So, that we have already discussed in announcment topic:

  1. No XLRs (despite audio inputs are balanced)
  2. No phantom power on audio input. Not good for condenser mikes.
  3. 30fps maximum only, many like 60fps now, and 120fps becomes new standard for pro cameras already
  4. Uncompressed only option for RAW requiring big investments
  5. SSD connectors are completely unsuitable for frequent insertion
  6. Long and complicated RAW workflow
  7. Required investments in backup solutions due to big file sizes
  8. Absent HDMI connection, so you need to buy new and much more costly monitor or EVF.

Is it possible for GH3 ? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5818/is-it-possible-for-gh3- Fri, 18 Jan 2013 05:56:49 +0000 Max_Kislinsky 5818@/talks/discussions Is it possible to increase dynamic range to 4:2:2 10bit or greater?

I've heard, that GH3 can record in 4K 20 frames per second and memory card capable to store 95 Mb/s. Therefore if we narrow size to 16mm (10.6mm x 6mm) is it possible to record RAW video?

In video mode replace exposure numbers with rotary disc shutter angle: 1/32 = 270° (?) | 1/48 = 180° (add) | 1/50 = 172.8° | 1/60 = 144°; | 1/96 = 90° (add) | 1/120 = 72° (add)

Add Frame Line - The aspect ratio frame  1.85:1 (35mm theatrical), 2.35:1 (Cinemascope)

2013 camera predictions? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5397/2013-camera-predictions Fri, 07 Dec 2012 01:59:09 +0000 pletta 5397@/talks/discussions So i'm coming into some money soon . . . and by coming into some money, I mean I'm getting my student loans soon and plan to spend it on something other than school. Anyways, I've been looking to get a better camera and I've been looking at Black Magic's camera. It sounds great and for a great price. The only reservation I have is that I've been looking at and reading about the Black Magic for quite awhile. In the mean time it seems there have been a ton of new and huge camera and image sensor innovations. This young trend of making extremely affordable and capable raw cinema cameras seems as though it is about to explode (more than it already has) and I wanted to know what kind of expectations anyone might have for cameras coming out in the near future regarding technical specs and prices. I.e. 16-bit 4k and high frame rates (not point grey) for $3000 ? I might be hoping for too much but after seeing some of the latest camera innovations it doesn't seem that far fetched.

Consolidated Specs for Cinema Cameras with RAW https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5270/consolidated-specs-for-cinema-cameras-with-raw Thu, 22 Nov 2012 05:29:39 +0000 thepalalias 5270@/talks/discussions I went through the list of topics in Raw Cameras and did not see a list like this, so since I had been compiling some for the blog I posted today at http://www.pasadenapulse.net, I thought I would put them here so that others can add to it (and correct any errors that are statistically likely to have been added. :)

These cameras all have (or are slated to have soon) RAW recording capability in some form.

Max Horizontal Resolution

  • BMCC: 2.4K
  • Arri Alexa: 2.88K max horizontal resolution.
  • Sony FS-700: 4K expandable with 1.92K at release.
  • Sony F55: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2160).
  • Canon C500: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2960 RAW max).
  • Sony F65: Greater than 4K.*
  • Red One/Red One MX: 4.5K max horizontal resolution.
  • Red Scarlet: 5K max horizontal resolution (but 4K max horizontal resolution at 24/25/30P).
  • Red Epic: 5K max horizontal resolution.
  • Red Dragon: 6K max horizontal resolution. Unreleased.

*As for the Sony F65, I don't want to get into that can of worms. With it's 20MP sensor, let's just say "easily 4K, probably more in the future" but not get too far into it other than to say that the current recording format is 4K.

Cameras with Global Shutter

  • Sony F55

Max Framerates at 4K and Highest Resolution (with the color depth recorded)

  • BMCC: Cannot do 4K. Max 30P 12-bit log at 2.5K.
  • Arri Alexa: Cannot do 4K. Max 60P 12-bit log at 2.88K in 16x9 mode.
  • Red One MX: 30P 12-bit at both 4.5K and 4K.
  • Canon C500: 60P 10-bit at 4K.
  • Sony FS-700: Upcoming 60P at unspecified RAW bit-depth in 4K.
  • Sony F55: 60P 16-bit linear 4K.
  • Sony F65: 120P 16-bit linear 4K.
  • CMV12000: 90P 12-bit or 150P 10-bit at 4K.
  • Red Scarlet: 30P 16-bit at 4K. 12P at 5K.
  • Red Epic: 150P 16-bit at 4K. 120P 16-bit at 5K.
  • Red Dragon: Unknown 4K (expected to meet or exceed Red Epic at all framerates but guaranteed 120P at 5K). At least 85P 16-bit at 6K. Unreleased.

Native DR

  • Sony FS-700: Untested in RAW.
  • Red One (not MX): 11.3 stops official.
  • Canon C500: 12 stops official. (Though the highlight roll-off has been garnering praise)
  • BMCC: 13 stops official.
  • Red MX (as used in MX/Scarlet/Epic): 13.5 official. (Some sources measured at under 12 but I'm not invested in one measurement over the other).
  • Arri Alexa: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F55: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F65: 14 stops official.
  • Red Dragon: Over 15 stops official. Unreleased.

And of course, the Red Scarlet, Epic (and upcoming Dragon) support the HDRx mode that some people like and others do not, which is officially specified as increasing dynamic range to 18 stops (with a lot of caveats to go along with it).

Panasonic DMC ZS3 https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4481/panasonic-dmc-zs3 Wed, 05 Sep 2012 16:18:36 +0000 JPH 4481@/talks/discussions I'm using the ZS3 with the Panasonic underwater housing. This is a great setup once you learn the right settings. I use white gloves so I can set white balance but this isn't ideal as depth and light changes rapidly. If this camera had RAW ability it would be a huge improvement. Full HD? Possible?

Hot/Stuck Pixels in RAW - solutions for GH2 https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3805/hotstuck-pixels-in-raw-solutions-for-gh2 Fri, 06 Jul 2012 20:26:14 +0000 luxis 3805@/talks/discussions I just noticed some Hot/stuck pixels on my GH2 in the raw photo format. Tried pixel refresh a few times, but it did nothing to remove them(btw, is this supposed to be something like pixel mapping on olympus cameras) Wonder if somebody can suggest some good programs and workflow(batch processing) to deal with the raw photos and remove the wrong pixels. Cleaning them manually is time consuming and thus not practical when many pictures are taken in raw format.

Thanks in advance.

Free Urban/Industrial Textures in 16MP RAW https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3526/free-urbanindustrial-textures-in-16mp-raw Sat, 09 Jun 2012 18:03:25 +0000 Pechente 3526@/talks/discussions I spent a bit of time photographing some textures and wanna share them. They're neither professionally recorded nor digitally further processed. So most of the stuff comes straight out of the camera. That's why I'm offering this both as JPG and RAW. Feel free to share it.

Below you can find some scaled down example shots of what you can expect from this collection:

You will find all textures on this website:

There even is a full archive for you to download (2GB!!).

I'm sure some of you here could find a good use for these :)

Proper raw camera https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3276/proper-raw-camera Sat, 19 May 2012 22:02:46 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 3276@/talks/discussions

Spectral Instruments makes camera that has a dynamic range so incredibly big that it can photograph both the sun and the stars in broad daylight. It's their 1110 series, a device with a 112 megapixel CCD, black and white, with no Bayer mask or filter of any type, "nothing to detract from the overall image sharpness." Their sensors are extremely light sensitive and can take exposures that last for hours without any noise at all. That's why you can do something like taking a picture of a starry sky in the middle of the day. The sensor measures 95 x 95 millimeters.

Yep. Something like it (with i5 4 core processor), with additional dock for stock 2.5" SSD. And camera module attached by USB 3.0.

It'll require Bauer battery to supply about 35-40W.

Why do we need HDMI alive: the next big step. https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/732/why-do-we-need-hdmi-alive-the-next-big-step. Mon, 22 Aug 2011 07:03:16 +0000 lolodigital 732@/talks/discussions Do I already dream about that I consider to be more important for numbers of us using the GH2 for professional stuff: clear HDMI output to get uncompressed videos ...

I do a brief comparison between hight contrast images, one grab from 42mb hack, the other from RAW picture cropped and resized.

Is there any chance to see something near RAW quality via HDMI link in the future ?
