Learn by watching https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3906/learn-by-watching Sun, 15 Jul 2012 06:39:22 +0000 matthere 3906@/talks/discussions With the wealth of member's knowledge on the Personal-View forum it might be a nice idea for people to share some knowledge on films, shows, directors, cinematographers, editors, documentaries and content that they have learned from. There are huge opportunities to develop bigger brains and skills by watching content provided by Netflicks, Lovefilm, Mubi and similar providers, but a big hurdle, particulally for beginners in movie making is to find good recommendations.

Your recommendation might just be for a great film that you think others would appreciate in which case a short description of the film followed by a subjective score would be helpful to others (eg. enjoyment 8.5/10)

You may feel that the film helped you in specific ways, or you feel compelled to break down your own opinion into other categories that you feel are significant (eg. cinematography/editing/story/innovation/technical expertise/humor/ use of CGI/etc...)

Whilst developing a list of helpful resources for all members to use for their own benefits, there are obviously going to be differences of opinion expressed. Rather than trying to undermine somebody elses subjective score on a particular resource it would benifit everyone if you just add your own opinion next to your own entry, this will allow others to develop an understanding of everyone's "Personal-View". Leading to opinions that we will value based on who's subjective opinion we value, rather than the thread ending up as a flame war on this very subjective subject.

Thank you :)

Great cinema long takes. Steadycam “evolution” https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15094/great-cinema-long-takes.-steadycam-evolution Thu, 19 May 2016 14:17:02 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 15094@/talks/discussions A little tribute to great long takes. From first attempts of camera stabilization by the inventor Garret Brown to the exhaustive use of this great system. You'll find examples from Rocky (John J. Avildsen), Hugo Cabret (Martin Scorsese), Shining (Stanley Kubrick), Carlito's Way (Brian de Palma) and L'ultimo Bacio (Gabriele Muccino).

Radian: Motion Timelapse Device https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6819/radian-motion-timelapse-device Fri, 26 Apr 2013 16:31:59 +0000 andrevanberlo 6819@/talks/discussions I came across the Radian on google searching for an automatic panning device and stumbled upon their kickstarter. Their project is fully funded now and they are shipping the devices as we speak. Looks good, it says it is not meant for video panning, not meant for, but might work? Couldn't find anything about Radian on this site so figured someone might wanna have a closer look at this so i posted it...

http://radian.alpinelaboratories.com/pages/radian

This comes from their website

Radian is a remarkably powerful, yet wonderfully simple smartphone-controlled device that lets you take stunning panning and tilting time-lapses with your dSLR camera or smartphone (in conjunction with another time-lapse app). With our free iOS/Android/web app, simply upload the desired time-lapse settings to Radian, unplug, and let Radian do the rest.

From time-lapses of sweeping landscapes to stormy clouds to busy street corners, the possibilities are limitless. In fact, the usefulness of time-lapses, especially panning ones, go beyond just creative endeavors. Its uses extend from architectural/construction site surveying, to documentation of projects, to even anthropological studies in urban environments. With panning, you can now capture the entire scene around you.

Radian is small, rugged, weather-resistant, and can handle anything you throw at it. It can rotate side-to-side. It can tilt up and down (with optional L-bracket). It can dynamically speed up and slow down. And if you have a Canon dSLR, you can change exposure to capture sunrise and sunset. You name it. With our app, the sky is the limit.

*Note: Radian is not meant for video panning

Affordable Digital 3-Axis Camera stabilization for the GH3 https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10984/affordable-digital-3-axis-camera-stabilization-for-the-gh3 Tue, 05 Aug 2014 01:09:08 +0000 Alexauwa 10984@/talks/discussions I am interested in systems like the Freefly MōVI M5 // Link here: http://store.freeflysystems.com/collections/movi/products/freefly-movi-m

We do not have such a budget. Are there any good alternatives around 1.000 - 3.000 Euro? We are shooting on Panasonic GH3s.

Thanks in advance. Alex

May I have your recommendation for optimal 720p/24/30/60 hack for my needs, please? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6088/may-i-have-your-recommendation-for-optimal-720p243060-hack-for-my-needs-please Mon, 11 Feb 2013 05:19:55 +0000 Kit_L 6088@/talks/discussions I make instructional videos only; no art. I need decent slo-mo, at human movement scale only (no bullets hitting lightbulbs). Running, jumping, etc. I do not want to do any correction in post (to the footage, I mean, talking about lifting shadows, changing exposure). I just want the best 720p for my needs, straight out of camera directly.

All I need is the cleanest rendition of human movement, and only at 720p. I have GH2, second system sound, Panny 25/1.4, CV 12/5.6 on adapter, and Lumix 14/2.5, ancillary gear.

I have watched footage from Sanity, Driftwood, and others; I would very much like other's input on this. The camera will only be used for video; I shoot other gear for stills. TIA, KL

La Salle de Classe - GH2 + Dolly Test (Driftwood) https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5056/la-salle-de-classe-gh2-dolly-test-driftwood Wed, 31 Oct 2012 15:19:48 +0000 brettplank 5056@/talks/discussions

I managed to use my school's dolly to pull off some test shots for smooth camera movements. Take note that I used and controlled everything singularly: I pulled focus, performed pans, and physically pushed the dolly itself. It was difficult, but I managed to get some usable footage. With one or two extra grips I can easily pull off great looking, smooth shots. I'll be shooting more with the dolly this week. I like grain.

  • GH2 w/ Driftwood Hack
  • Canon FD 50mm f/1.4
  • Sigma 30mm f/1.4
  • 16mm grain overlay

I'de be happy if you'd share your experience with the gear you are using.
