I'm collecting references of video graphical representation of data, charts, etc. Looking for some input from you people here about what can be a good way or some place were you have seen it done good in any way.

P.S. I'm really focusing on the graphical representation thing alone, apart from the narrative or the facts illustration in broadcast news thing, but discussion of it would also be welcome.

Thanks!!

Motorized timelapse options for varavon slider? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11105/motorized-timelapse-options-for-varavon-slider Sat, 23 Aug 2014 15:05:31 +0000 ICProductions 11105@/talks/discussions Hey PV! Are there any options/alternatives to the motoroid/timeroid for the varavon sliders (specifically v800)? Are there other brands/systems that work ?

I'm mainly wondering about the Konova Motorized Kit B that comes with the crank as well. It seems a better value and can be upgraded as I go.

I've also been entertaining DIY and have read numerous ideas, including this one - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=m5_ZQCQj7sg.

(He doesn't talk about how to attach it to the carriage at all, I'm thinking of buying the varavon weight pulley because it has a plate that fits)

Does anyone have examples of DIY for the varavon ?

Also - going the DIY route - is it a better design to have the have the motor on an end or with the carriage?

Spanning at 24H-- does this exist? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6307/spanning-at-24h-does-this-exist Sat, 02 Mar 2013 14:07:05 +0000 Brian_Siano 6307@/talks/discussions I've finally acquired a Sandisk Extreme Pro card, 95 mbps, 32 gig, and I'm trying to find a patch that will span reliably at 24H.

I've been trying various patches, at 24H and 24L, and here are my results: Sanity 5.1 and Flow Motion don't span in 24H, but they span in 24L. Intravenus 2, Quantum 9b, Quantum 2 don't span in either mode. I'm trying Cake 2.3 right now.

Now, I understand that one needs a Sandisk Extreme Pro 64gig card to be absolutely sure that spanning can work. I'm not sure why that is, but that's been reported. But others seem to be able to get some of the above to span on the 32gig card (for example, Quantum 2's supposed to be able to do it).

So I have two questions. Is there a patch that reliably spans the 32gig card? And is this an indication that I got a bum 32gig card?

ADDENDUM: Cake 2.3 seems to be spanning in 24H m mode. But my questions still stand.)

The other key issue is not copying the original footage to disk, since my SSDs are re-used on a regular basis. This makes grading a one shot process (well until the SSDs are needed again). Obviously money could improve this workflow, but then there would be no profit!

Has anyone a recommendation for a motion tracker? I spoke to imageneer systems and they have a SDK for mocha, but this is really expensive. I want to track objects directly in Premiere Pro and our tool will be developed in C++.

I would prefer not to use a stand-alone software or maybe mocha in AE and export the data from there into our plug-in which would be really easy, but to integrate it directly.

720p 60p GH2 hack: an attempt to improve the quality, stability and reliability. https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10650/720p-60p-gh2-hack-an-attempt-to-improve-the-quality-stability-and-reliability. Sat, 21 Jun 2014 17:03:43 +0000 apefos 10650@/talks/discussions I am trying to improve the quality of 720p 60p in GH2.

I did some research in the forum about PTools settings but I did not find the answers I need...

What happens is:

Only GOP which works good for 720p 60p are GOP 30 and GOP 3, all other GOP gives diagonal pattern (rain) in computer monitor. But the GOP 3 in 720p always stops recording and it seems the card is not the problem, I am using Sandisk 45mbps and other people says the Sandisk 95mbps also stops recording in 720p hacks... The GOP 6, 12 and 15 works for some shoots, but they are unstable (sometimes stops recording) and gives diagonal pattern (rain) in computer monitor. GOP 3 stops recording all the time, no matter the bitrate (I tested GOP 3 from 40 to 200mbps). So GOP 30 is the only option.

Problem is: when using the GOP 30 the camera encoder always keeps the bitrate very low when the camera is quiet, when there is no motion in the image, and this gives lots of macroblocking and texture lost in low light. Even when I set the bitrate to 48mbps or 64mbps in PTools the camera does not record 48mbps or 64mbps, StreamParser shows only around 23mbps... (for static low light shoots)

The auto quantizer all to motion or all to details did not make any difference. So I did some try to change settings in TESTER options of PTools. I fount the TOP and BOTTOM bitrate limits and I enabled it with 48000 and 42000 for top and bottom 720p, but this makes no effects in encoding, bitrate is still very low for static shots no matter the bitrate I type in PTools...

Only thing I found to make the bitrate encoding keep high is the GOP 3, but camera stops recording in all 720p shoots, the GOP 3 just works for 1080p.

So I am wondering if there is a way to keep the bitrate high using GOP 30 in 720p...

Any suggestion welcome, thanks.

Good Support from MotionVFX https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9314/good-support-from-motionvfx Fri, 10 Jan 2014 11:15:05 +0000 andyharris 9314@/talks/discussions I've bought three 'projects' from this company. For my last purchase I bought a theme in red and I needed it in blue to match the team colours.

I applied HS filters to the elements but found that transparency failed on embedded clips of flare - not in Motion but in FCPx. Furthermore, dropzones were working differently.

These projects are not very expensive so I didn't expect too much when I put a support email in. I was pleasantly surprised by the response.

First Clips in DropZones work differently in FCPx 10.1 - my bad I should have done a little more research (Now the position of the playhead at the point of application is used rather than the beginning of the selection) .

Transparency in Motion and the way that video is inherited into the dropzone in FCPx is quite complex where there is another transparent video clip in the project. The upshot is that if you apply a HS filter to a group of elements then the transparent clip in that element has the equal and opposite HS filter applied.

Jakub Jaroszek of MotionVFX send me a screenshot of his Motion project with all the elements expanded and an explanation of what to do where.

I thought this was worthy of a note on PV.

It is about a guy here in Stockholm who is called "The Magnetist" because he is obsessed with cassette tapes. I used a pair of GH2s and Voigtlander 25mm and SLR Magic 12mm, a cheap chinese 35mm cctv lens and a Konica Hexanon 135mm vintage lens in two shots. I also converted the files with 5D2RGB to get rid of the diagonal rain pattern in Premiere.

"THE MAGNETIST is a short documentary about Micke, also known as 'The Magnetist', whose life revolves around cassette tapes.

Most of Micke's time is spent on varius tape-related projects; he blogs about them, he makes music with them and he got a monthly tape club in his hometown Stockholm. Sometimes it's a struggle. Here we get an insight to Micke's life as a tapeologist and joins him to his tape-only club to find out the motivation behind his interest."

Does anyone have problems watching since it's in 1080p, I'm not sure if some computers might struggle?

A huge thank to Vitaliy the Personal View community for hacks and information!

Vanilla Hack Crashing Sandisk Extreme 95mb/s https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6649/vanilla-hack-crashing-sandisk-extreme-95mbs Tue, 09 Apr 2013 21:33:58 +0000 sesame2013 6649@/talks/discussions I applied the vanilla hack, tested it and was able to crash it reliably at 12000 ISO even when using the SanDisk Extreme PRo SDHC UHS-I Card 32GB. (Any rapid or semi rapid pan crashed it). I did some further testing (rapid pans at regular ISOs) and it seemed stable enough to bring on a shoot, so now I'm out in the field and it occasionally crashes at 160 ISO when dealing with complex outdoor scenery.

I'm confused and surprised that a card rated up to 95mb/s is crashing with a hack that is at 44mb/s??? Has anyone else experienced this? It also crashes on my older Transcend Class 10 16GB cards but not that much more frequently. Completely lame given the cost differential between these two cards.

I'm considering reverting back to baseline, but nervous to do so in the middle of a shoot (the vanilla hack was my first hack on the GH2 so this is still new to me). For now I'm working around it. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

CHDK-Like Motion Detection Possible on GH2? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6358/chdk-like-motion-detection-possible-on-gh2 Thu, 07 Mar 2013 23:59:46 +0000 ragnar 6358@/talks/discussions I've been experimenting and using the motion detection scripts from the Canon CHDK hack on my Canon S100 and from what I've done it looks like it's going to come in real handy for set-and-forget bird photography, which is what I mostly do. It made me wonder if such a motion detection parameter might be possible in the GH2 hack? It's been fun going into the various motion.bas scripts and turning on/off masking areas of the screen and changing the sensitivity of the motion detection so it got me thinking of doing the same with my GH2? Possible? No? Yes? Hope so, but I probably would have heard about it by now.

I did do a search of the term 'motion detection' but only found one incidence which was a request for it in the coming GH3 hack.

Hack for Feature Lenght Documentary Film for the BIG SCREEN - "Digital Cinema Package" https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5491/hack-for-feature-lenght-documentary-film-for-the-big-screen-digital-cinema-package Sat, 15 Dec 2012 07:41:03 +0000 MisterJ 5491@/talks/discussions Hi!

It's been around a Year I signed in here for the very first time. So now, after many test shoots, I'm planning to choose GH2 for the next film project.

Film is about 85 minute long documentary. Films shooting style is mainly situation-based documentary (Cinéma Vérité aka Direct Cinema) with some "cinematic scenes". So some of the scenes are classic documentary and some more stylistic - fiction like - with lightning crew, dolly, directed action etc.

These situation-based events I'm going to shoot with GH2 attached to the Steadicam Pilot. And yes, no interviews. This means I don't have very long takes.

I really like Lee's Flow Motion v2 and Nick's Sedna (AQ1-A) or Cluster v6&7. These I've tested quite a lot. What I'm looking for is best combination in detail and in fluid motion (motion rendering - no strobo effect). And of course hacks reliability is a virtue too! =D

So does anyone has any extra pointers about taking a project to Big Screen? Or if You think there is superior Hack for this kind of project - please don't hesitate to speak out.

Thanx and all the Best, MisterJ
