Mac free apps, tips and tricks https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11519/mac-free-apps-tips-and-tricks Wed, 08 Oct 2014 16:05:20 +0000 maxr 11519@/talks/discussions Hey pips =)

I put together some stuff that either workarounds some of mac OS problems/limitations or makes specific tasks easier.
Your most welcome to add your own

01 Afloat

I wanted DigitalColor Meter to remain on top of all windows as is very anoying to have to call for the app to see/copy values.
This is the solution I found: afloat • case you want to I attached SIMBIL 0.9.9 and this Afloat direct download link HERE should work. BIG thanks to Chris Van Patten

See in the screen grab below how DCM it is not active as safari was selected and yet it remains floating on top, like a good girl ;-)

image

It works with many (not all) applications including finder itself, below's another example
FYI with multi-window apps, i.e stickies, IF you decide to pin one window to the desktop, you'll have to circle through (finder then stickies) to then select window from the menu, be sure that the correct sticky is selected and then adjust effects, that'll make dialog desapear. Have a look at guide that comes with afloat installer as there are shortcuts for almost everything. The "Make this window an overlay" (clicks fall through) and "Make it opaque while I'm working with it" options are also useful

Best way to edit 4K footage to HD output Premiere Pro iMac https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15728/best-way-to-edit-4k-footage-to-hd-output-premiere-pro-imac Wed, 14 Sep 2016 16:33:10 +0000 webarchitect 15728@/talks/discussions Greetings, and thanks to all who contribute here. I learn something almost daily. While I've read posts in several places on this topic, I've not found consensus, but have run into issues. Here's the scenario:

I'm shooting 4K with the GH4 for all the benefits including punch in, pans, etc. Final output is 1080p. Occasionally I'll mix in some HD footage.

The last project I did was 6.5 mins, but much to my surprise was really dragging down my computer. I wonder if some of you with more experience can suggest a better workflow. I'm hoping to avoid buying a new computer for another year, but will do what I must when I can. Here's what I'm working with:

Premiere Pro CC iMac (Retina 5K, 27 inch, Late 2014) 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 16 GB 1600 MGz DDR3 AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB

To create a sequence, I've simply dragged the the first 4k clip to the timeline and let Premiere handle the settings accordingly. I edit, then export as HD.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and advice!

Reasonable Mac Laptop for 4K Editing https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15566/reasonable-mac-laptop-for-4k-editing Mon, 22 Aug 2016 23:08:57 +0000 matt_gh2 15566@/talks/discussions Hey all,

I'm looking to get a Mac Laptop for editing/color grading 4K footage (for feature films). How expensive a Mac Laptop do I need to get and still be able to edit and color grade 4K footage? Do you definitely need a quad core? Can you get decent performance from a dual core?

Thanks guys, Matt

Use DSLR Monitor as 2nd monitor for Mac Pro (2013) https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10573/use-dslr-monitor-as-2nd-monitor-for-mac-pro-2013 Tue, 10 Jun 2014 02:00:39 +0000 andrevanberlo 10573@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

I need a portable monitor I could mount on my GH3 or rig it for monitoring my Mac Pro (2013 version). I'd prefer a 9" version but I hope 7" would do the job as well.

This is what I want to use it for: I'm doing live streaming lessons but I need to monitor Skype at the same time to see what the student is doing. As I'll be completely surrounded by lights and cameras there is no way for me to place my thunderbolt monitor (too many things could go wrong).

Would it be possible to use a DSLR field monitor for this? And what would be a good choice?

I don't need colour fidelity, or peaking or any of those features(nice if they're there of course), most important thing is quality of the image and size of the screen: definitely not below 7" and preferably 9" and above.

I have no idea if dslr monitors can be used this way but I'm sure some of you do!

Thanks for reading this,

André

How to record (and monitor) any internal sound on a mac easy and free? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9047/how-to-record-and-monitor-any-internal-sound-on-a-mac-easy-and-free Tue, 10 Dec 2013 21:06:11 +0000 maxr 9047@/talks/discussions Recently I desperately - oohh c'won exaggeration, buhhhh, hung him - needed to record something coming from the web browser, I normally use other more stupid (time consuming) ways. This one I thought was worth sharing

4 simple steps

1 - Download Soundflower

2 - Install. Restart. Go to system preferences/sound/ and select sound flower both from input and output
alternatively and much faster you can just press the volume icon in the menu bar while pressing Alt.

3 - In your sound flower applications folder launch Soundflowerbed, in the icon in system menu bar select Soundflower (2ch) output;
you can further tweak settings below, but it is really up to you

4 - Launch Quicktime X, then File/New Audio Recording and from little triangle at right select sound flower input and quality.
Orrrr you can use instead Quicktime pro version, as will allow you to record uncompressed happy audio unicorn files, yeahhh

Extra tit, I mean tip for monitoring or realtime line input
This is the simplest and free also: RogueAmoeba's Line In

And because I really don't want you to remain with unhealthy curiosity, this is the thing I wanted to record :P

it reminded me of a japanese Maria Peszek

GH2 to Macbook for live monitoring - wired options? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7209/gh2-to-macbook-for-live-monitoring-wired-options Mon, 10 Jun 2013 11:11:04 +0000 Social 7209@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I've been looking around for info on how to use my new 2013 macbook pro to show live video primarily, and images if possible, that are being recorded/photographed live from my GH2... essentially using my Macbook as a monitor.

There is a thread on PV that is a couple of years old which I have posted to, but through I'd open this up as a new topic as well, as I'm sure there are people out there in GH2 land who could do with this info as well. Here's a link to the original topic: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1207/gh2-live-streaming-solutions/p1

I'm hoping that in the 2 years since the original thread, the tech options have moved on. My macbook has thunderbolt, which, from experience connecting macbook to tv, works well with hdmi, and as thunderbolt connectivity can be used to transfer data from a hard drive back and forth, it must be a 2 way connection, so theoretically should allow for possible hdmi data being inputed to my mac.

I am relatively new to this and am trying to gather information, as this forum has been so informative in the past, I wanted to ask you guys what you would do in my situation? I would appreciate cheaper options if possible, primarily wired options as from scouring the web, there are issues with data signal interruptions and signal distance on wireless options.... plus wired is, I expect, considerably cheaper!

Can you help?

Thanks, Rob

http://blackbettycameras.com/first-camera/

Interesting cam. Since some old Mac Mini's use 12v unregulated power, you can rig them up to a battery. It shoots cineform raw. It reminded me of this old topic. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3725/4k-usb-3.0-camera-with-raw-option-less-than-1k/p1

The Flea3 costs $900(you need to register to see prices) and can do 4k at 21fps and lower res at 24fps, but not sure what res. Another cam with max res of 2k and 60fps costs $650.

Automator workflow to open GH2 stream folder https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6707/automator-workflow-to-open-gh2-stream-folder Tue, 16 Apr 2013 09:41:41 +0000 rsquires 6707@/talks/discussions I am trying to automate the process of getting to the Stream folder in Mac OSX. It would be great to be able to drag the SD card folder onto an application that opened the stream folder so you can access the raw mts files. In automator you can use a process called Watch me Do and this basically records your mouse movements and menu options. I have basically run through the usual way, highlighting Private -show package contents, etc. It seems to record all the entries but when I run it, it barfs and falls over at the first Show package contents. I think this would be really useful for the Mac OSX folks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, in getting some sort of automation set up

Apple to discontinue Mac Pro in EU after March 1st https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6007/apple-to-discontinue-mac-pro-in-eu-after-march-1st Mon, 04 Feb 2013 11:58:13 +0000 inqb8tr 6007@/talks/discussions

"As of March 1, 2013, Apple will no longer sell Mac Pro in EU, EU candidate and EFTA countries because these systems are not compliant with Amendment 1 of regulation IEC 60950-1, Second Edition which becomes effective on this date. Apple resellers can continue to sell any remaining inventory of Mac Pro after March 1,"

"The Mac Pro met the previous standards prior to the amendment 1 addition. Obviously it's a very safe and very reliable product," added the company.

At issue are the large fans within the Mac Pro. Since they are unprotected, it would be possible to touch the fan blades.

"The new requirements necessitate fan guards and some increased protection on the ports on the electrical system," explained Apple.

Another nail in the Mac Pro coffin.

It still has over a year of AppleCare left and had a new display installed via AppleCare (it had a minor yellow tint, new display doesn't) and is in perfect physical condition. This unit hasn't failed me a day since I purchased it, and should last a long, long, long time.

Price: Mac2sell suggests the after market price for this unit is $1,640. That's a little steep, but I'm looking to get between $1,400 and $1,500 OBO + shipping (usually under $50 within North America. Overseas things get pricey real quick).

Specs: -OSX Lion 10.7.4 -2.8ghz i5 Quadcore Processor -16GB of RAM -1TB Hard Drive -ATI Radeon HD 5750 graphics card w/1GB RAM -Bluetooth, 802.11g/n WiFi, FaceTime Camera -Wireless Keyboard, and Magic Mouse -Original Box and Packaging included

Preferably pay through Paypal of course.
