The Simplest, Fastest Interview Lighting Setup https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1505/the-simplest-fastest-interview-lighting-setup Sun, 20 Nov 2011 22:48:30 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 1505@/talks/discussions Years in the making, this technique works in almost every situation and makes almost everyone look great. That’s about the best you can hope for when shooting talking heads on a tight schedule.

image

Yes, it looks simple. Deceptively simple. Believe it or not, it takes a long time to learn to light so simply. There was a time when I used every light on the truck (or the van) on my shoots, but as I’ve matured the number of lights I use has dropped dramatically.

That’s very important, because it’s not enough to be able to do great work as a DP. You have to do it in a very short period of time. Creating the prettiest lighting setup in the world doesn’t help anyone if it takes so long that the director only has five minutes to get what they need. Lighting is important, but it’s not the most important thing.

The seed of this idea formed during my search to make talking head interviews interesting for me to shoot. The bar for corporate marketing videos is often quite low, so I found myself able to experiment with lighting setups without getting in trouble for it. If I couldn’t find a fast, pretty way to light something to my satisfaction most of my corporate clients were still very happy with what I came up with, so I took those opportunities to examine what worked and what didn’t when lighting a human face under unpredictable circumstances. (Anyone who shoots these kinds of corporate projects knows there’s usually no scout and no technical pre-production at all: you show up, see the locations for the first time, and make the most of the hand you’re dealt.)

Edge Lit Pro LED Light https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17787/edge-lit-pro-led-light Tue, 19 Sep 2017 10:35:32 +0000 shoe_e 17787@/talks/discussions image

I came across the Savage Edge Lit Pro LED Light while on the Fstoppers https://goo.gl/nGhwc9 website and I was intrigued.

I was intrigued because I love these new SMD Ultra-slim LED Panels everyone is releasing. I was intrigued because Joe Edelman really knows his stuff and if he's using something it's usually pretty good. I was really intrigued though, because I had seen it before. It's not the first time we've come across something that has multiple brandings or distributors, like Godox, Flashpoint, Cheeta, Neewer, etc. So when I saw Savage showing this light on their website, listed at $311.99, also at BH and Adorama, I was like "EFFFFFFF NO!" I literally sounded out the letter F to be clear.

Why was I so pissed off you ask? Simply because I had seen this light before and I had seen it long before Savage released it. See I dedicate an hour of my day, early morning to be exact, for R&D. I scour the interwebs searching for new Photo/Video tech just to see what's out there. In the spirit of this forum, I'm always looking for alternatives and cheaper yet equally good solutions. In my searches, I had already come across the Yidoblo LED PE-920II as well as its brother, the LED PD-920II. As far as I can tell, the only difference in these models is that the PE-920II comes with a remote, which is something we'll get to because it's an important note, as you'll see.

Who the heck is Yidoblo you may ask, as I did. Yidoblo is a subsidary of the Foshan Meidike Photographic Equipment CO. LTD, also brand themselves as Dison. If you visit their website http://meidike.com/en/, they have sh**load of lighting products, which if you have spent time on ebay, Aliexpress, or any other international marketplace, you may recognize. Some of their products can be found on Amazon as well.

Let's check out the specs on the Meidike site for the Yidoblo LED PE-920II:

2.4G wireless remote control, can control the AE six groups of lights, each group of lights can support 100 lamps; remote control distance of up to 80 meters; power stepless adjustment, the output precision to 100 , the operating data LCD screen intuitive display, easy to operate, Easy to remember to improve work efficiency, can be installed on a tripod / handheld / desktop.

  1. LED patch lamp beads number: 160PCS
  2. the maximum power: 56W
  3. color rendering index CRI : > 95RA
  4. led the average life: 10000H
  5. the maximum number of lumens: 3300LM
  6. color temperature: 3200-5500K
  7. light angle: 120 degrees
  8. power: AC110-240V DC14.5V
  9. the length of 35 * 25 * 1.2CM ; weight 1.35KG

Standard configuration:

  • LED lights
  • the power adapter
  • 2.4G with screen remote control
  • battery buckle, LCD screen

Whether you read the specs over at BH or on Savage's website, it's clear these guys are identical. The only question you may be asking, is maybe Yidoblor ripped off Savage? I don't think that's the case. If you look at the inlcuded photos below, you'll notice that the Yidoblo light comes with a special made Yidbolo remote controller. The Savage also comes with a remote control, but that controller is a knockoff of the remote you find when you buy any Godox remote system. That's right, they may have modified the frequency, but it is the same model.

So why does this matter? Well you can buy the Savage LED for a little over $300, and to their credit, they package it very nicely. At the same time, you can find the Yidoblo scattered over ebay, Aliexpress and Amazon for ~$140-$160.

That's a huge price difference.

How did Hitchcock get those eyes? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17240/how-did-hitchcock-get-those-eyes Sun, 25 Jun 2017 16:09:46 +0000 Psyco 17240@/talks/discussions After watching the video "Eyes of Hitchcock"
I'm wondering, how did he get those sharp brightly lit eyes, while the rest of the face is smooth and no strong light is visible?

Have a look at the video, its not in every shot, but there are enough examples of what I mean - most of them are b/w.

  • Was this created on set/in camera?
  • How did he light the faces?
  • Any post production tricks?
  • How to do it today?
  • How to do it today without tracking every eye and using power windows?

  • Remarkable quality of light

Issues

  • Control operate in a non linear fashion

My Thoughts

I saw these at the Photography Show and thought they were really good value for money. I bought one on the spot! Having tested it I feel my instincts were right and that it is indeed a very useful light. I'm comparing them against 2 year old £3000 Kino Celeb 200s. This is not so much a comment on the quality of the Kinos, which was amazing at the time, but more an observation that LED Lighting just keeps getting better!

Interview shots in documentaries https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15906/interview-shots-in-documentaries Wed, 19 Oct 2016 01:39:04 +0000 inqb8tr 15906@/talks/discussions For people that frequently shoot this kind of footage, it could be useful to share interesting interview shots from documentaries in this topic, discuss them and get inspiration and ideas for our work. Something like a reference database.

Interesting in terms of lighting, composition, and general cinematographic approach - how does it relate to the story, characters, atmosphere

Let me start with some random examples,

Man on Wire (2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1155592/

Interview with the main guy in the film is done in very minimalistic way. He emerges from the darkness, just like his story unravels from his memory, presented in very suspenseful manner.

http://imgur.com/lglkTFe

X-ray Audio

This is very good documentary about production and distribution of 'prohibited' records cut onto x-ray sheets in USSR times. Really interesting topic and characters. The film features interviews with people who were involved in that seemingly crazy actions back in the days. Interviews show their passion and determination despite the danger they put themselves into. But they are also very funny and original characters:

This man surrounded with bunch of items that directly correlate to his story:

http://imgur.com/rf3nLGo

Or this guy filmed on location that bring us to the atmosphere of back alleys where 'trades' usually took place. I particularly like the light setup of this one:

Just few examples for now, but hopefully this can grow.

MR16 High CRI lights for home studio https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15690/mr16-high-cri-lights-for-home-studio Thu, 08 Sep 2016 18:02:12 +0000 DrDave 15690@/talks/discussions Currently, I'm retrofitting my IKEA flying saucer 12v MR16 system with high CRI MR16 LED bulbs. There's a lot of these 12v systems around; they are easy and flexible to set up, and many of them can be adjusted--they are cheap and easy, and the halogen style bulbs were actually pretty good, although not a lot of light.
On Amazon, I found these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QIF829C/
They aren't cheap, but the light quality is very good so far, supposedly CRI 95.
You can also use these lights in 12 volt situations, like off grid, campers, back yard studios, etc.

Simple bulb-holder + bulb options https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4059/simple-bulb-holder-bulb-options Fri, 27 Jul 2012 10:10:59 +0000 kronstadt 4059@/talks/discussions I have recently purchased one of those eBay E27 bulb-holders that fit onto your light stand and also hold an umbrella. The sellers of these bulb-bolder have no clue what's the maximum wattage bulb you can fit into this.

Typically, these bulb holders are made to hold big fluorescent bulbs with an umbrella or a softbox.

They fit the standard E27 (ES) screw bulbs. So I'm wondering what other bulb options do we have with these bulb-holders? For example, I'm thinking of putting a 120W PAR38 bulb into it in order to achieve a very "spot" kinda light (for backlight). Another good use would be to use an ordinary bulb with some black foil. But then what wattage bulbs can fit to these?

So I'm wondering what other uses these bulb-holders have?

LED lighting setup for interviews https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4452/led-lighting-setup-for-interviews Sun, 02 Sep 2012 16:43:23 +0000 5thwall 4452@/talks/discussions Hi everyone - haven't been around here much lately. Been happily busy with my GH2 shooting docs, corporate vids, etc... Thanks again to everyone who put time into the hack. You guys are great.

I was hoping to get some recommendations on lighting and grip gear. I have a budget of about $1500 US total for everything. I'll be doing a combo of Craigslist for the grip gear (found some c-stands and sandbags for a good price on there) and Amazon/Rest of the Web for the lights.

My main question is in regards to how many lights you all would recommend I get for a starter kit? There is a good deal on the CN-900 light over at ePhoto's site. I want to grab them quick, given the sale price. Not sure how much longer they'll be up for that price.

Light-wise, I was thinking about going with: 2 ePhoto CN-900 lights 1 ePhoto CN-600 light

Originally I was looking at getting 3 500-LED bi-color lights. They're cheaper, but I'm concerned about the amount of light in a larger room.

I read that Vitaliy recommends bi-color lights. But I'm not sure if the budget will quite work out for me on this one. It looks like I'll have to gel the single color lights.

This is primarily for interviews, both interior and exterior with a battery. I've read about a couple options on batteries.

Also, I will be shooting a short in the next couple of weeks. It's a single location, single-camera sitcom-style short. The main location will be a (hopefully) medium to large basement-style room.

Thanks!

I mean, with a rectangular profile, you have a larger back side area to reflect, so does it matter?

Which would you guys recommend, Aputure Amaran HR672W High CRI95 LED OR Yongnuo YN900 LED or Yongnuo YN600?

Is the Yongnou 900 better to buy in a fixed 5500k version (since i get all 900 bulbs to be usable together) or should i rather opt for the fixed 5500k YN600 Led.

Should i go for the Bi color models available in both these brands or the fixed 5500k ones are logically a better option. (Need suggestions, please dont reply saying depends on your needs). Planning on buying 2 of the ones that are suggested.

Also, i am aware the Yongnou are brighter but just wanted an expert opinion based on experience from fellow members. Is the Fan sound issue on the Yongnou's too much of a bother?

Any other LED suggestions are also welcome.

Fluorescent tubes as practicals? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12796/fluorescent-tubes-as-practicals Mon, 13 Apr 2015 12:49:19 +0000 Psyco 12796@/talks/discussions Hi, I want to use practicals in a class room. There are normal fluorescents tubes mounted to the ceiling, which can easily be replaced. But the room is also flooded with daylight through windows (which will be "dimmed" by using ND gels). I want a good colour match between the tube-light and the daylight from the windows.

Would this tubes do the trick:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/10x-Philips-Leuchtstoffrohre-MASTER-TL-D-De-Luxe-T8-965-Tageslicht-58W-/400751514576 (6500K, RA 93)

Or do I have to use the more expensive ones:

http://www.ebay.de/itm/10x-Philips-Leuchtstoffrohre-MASTER-TL-D-Graphica-T8-965-Tageslicht-58W-/400751546950 (6500K, RA 98)

I think 50Hz flickering is not much of a problem, as there is no fast motion in the scenes and I can adjust the shutter speed as needed (using a BMPCC at 24 fps).

Any input about using fluorescent tubes are welcome:-)

I've been having a idea about an interface's POV, in that you see characters from behind the interface, so that formed the based of this test:

It took more time to set up than shoot (about 2 hours). In this test the Ring Light is set to 50% brightness and the white balance is set at 5600K. I believe its going to be a pretty useful addition to my lighting and the only downside it that I can't find a suitable soft bag to protect it in transit.

The music was assembled from kits from Big Fish Audio.

How would you improve this "Infinite White" or "High Key" video? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5840/how-would-you-improve-this-infinite-white-or-high-key-video Sat, 19 Jan 2013 16:18:12 +0000 DanPV 5840@/talks/discussions I saw this video featured on Olivia Tech. It is a video made by one of her readers after she posted a tutorial about how to produce a "Infinite White" (high key backround) video.

I don't mean to be overly critical but something looks weird to me. Here are my guesses about what may have happened:

  • Key lights positioned too low
  • Light spill from background lights falling on the talent's left side (Maybe this was intentional?)
  • Actor may have been positioned too close to the white background
  • The two key lights look to have been set at equal intensity. Maybe lower the brightness of one of the key lights slightly.

What do you think? How could the lighting be improved.

www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?311263-400w-Metal-Halide-6500k-anyone-tried-it

He talks about this $ 35 bulb http://www.hidhut.com/400w-metal-halide-lamp-6500-kelvin-p-418.html and $ 100 ballast. The bulb is 400 watt 6500 k and 90 cri (to be verified). If this is the case for $ 150 dollars you would get a reflector bulb/ballast socket system that would yield about the power of a 1500/2000 watt tungsten light in little overcast cloudy kelvin (6500k) that can be gelled easily with little power loss to 5600. Hard light that can be shaped much more than any soft light.

I usually stick to tungsten as much as I can but wanted to branch out and play with something different. So my plan is to turn off all the lights in my living room and re-light using a more cinematic style (maybe turn it into a weekend short). Its really just an exercise/learning experience. I have a gh2 that seems to hate fluorescents in the past and flickers but everyone talks about the colors you can get from them if you can pull something off. Is it possible to even film using the gh2 with fluorescents? I would like both 24p and slomo to be flicker free.

My lighting style is a bunch of little lights vs floods of light and the room itself is a kitchen/living room about 600 sq/ft. I do have one sliding glass door but it doesn't get a lot of light. I will be test lighting both day and night. Thanks for all opinions and recommendations!

Also, just so everyone knows. Setting your shutter speed to 1/50 or 1/60 does not fix this problem. It may reduce it but it has been my experience that it does not.
